Just wondering what the interval is for the cambelt on the Jetta diesel im thinking of buying and if its an easy change or a difficult one? Read more
Hi everyone
I'm restoring an old bicycle, and have started respraying with "smoothrite" aerosol.
I did what it said on the tin, and overpainted 3 or 4 coats within 15min intervals.
First few coats went on nicely, nice shiny smooth finish then the last coat has ended up all pockmarked as if someone has been over it putting tiny pinholes in it.
(A) Why has this happened - what is wrong with my technique
(B) can I overpaint it if it has been left for a week to cure ? The original brush-smothrite had to be left min. 6 weeks before overpainting otherwise it went al crinkly underneath and you had to completely strip back to bare metal again.
P.S. My aerosol can says "New Formula" ?? !
Left as a standalone post, is it Tech ? is it IHAQ ?, well a bike's got wheels ! Read more
I don't know for sure, but poor overpaintability seems to be a Hammerite watchword.
i was checking my tax disc expiry date today as i never get a reminder and noticed that the cars vin number is on full display on a small metal tag attatched to the bulkhead trim at the bottom of the windscreen passenger side, i thought this was suppose to be out of view to deter cloning ? Hello all, the car is a Daewoo Nexia, 1.5 16V, 1996. It failed its MOT last week. The results on the print out were.
fast idle
C0 0.762 fail
HC 95 pass
Lambda 1.017 pass
The natural idle test also failed on CO at 0.574 %
I thought it wasn't far off passing so I gave it a service, new oil, filter, plugs, air filter and a good Italian tune up and 25 miles drive, took it back for free retest. It failed again
CO 0.715 % fail
HC 98 pass
Lambda 1.022 pass
The natural idle also failed again on CO at 0.593 %
Last year it had a new cat and lambda sensor, any ideas please on what to look for? Read more
Ok fellas, thanks for your help, I'll let you know the outcome.
I have just sold my car to someone from Poland. Filled out the logbook as you do. Gave him his slip. Will send off my logbook to DVLA.
I have noticed on the form that i will still be responsible for my car till DVLA gets the logbook. I have put the time i sold the car next to the date. What happens if the new owner decides to speed and gets flashed by the speed camera etc? Where do i stand if the address he has given is false etc?
Just me being worried Read more
Didn't have one with a false address, but did have a guy turn up in a battered old Luton van, no tax and cracked screen etc. Told us he had got a lift off of a mate (van was parked just out of sight on main road) then drove off in the car he had just bought off of us (via ebay), left it 2 days and van still had not moved so dropped him an email letting him know that vehicles that were left in the same area as his van have in the past been vandalised etc (they hadn't as it is a very good area) - just a rouse to let him know we knew it was his van (he had bought it 2 weeks before on ebay - we just looked at his purchase history!!!) - within 24hours the van had gone and he dropped a very nice email back thanking me for letting him know.
All ended as it should with no nastiness just an understanding between 2 people that both knew exactly what was going on!!!!!!!
Hi BR's
Just a quick one, over the past few weeks I have notced when satrting in the morning my car is a bit hesitant to accelarate from a standstill. It moves ok but it is like a slight misfire. This only lasts for about 20-30 secs and after that it is fine all day. Is this something electrical (HT Leads or plugs)?

A little more back ground to this fault
This morning started fine, let tick over for 10-15 seconds then set off. Drove no moe that 1km and cut out to tick over, engine producing no revs when pedal pressed. Tickover very rough, hunting between 500-750 rpm. Popping noise coming from air filter area. A combination of starting and stopping finnaly got rid of the problem and it drove the 3 miles home with out missing a beat even give it a bit of toe and it was very smooth. It appears the problem gos the more the temp rises but strangely started ok when clot cold. Its like that in between point
Would fault codes help?
VW Golf TDi Mk3-1996,During the MOT emissions check, under heavy revs, car was smoking black smoke from exhaust. The car only just passed on emissions, and reading was quite high, any ideas what could be causing this?Blockages in the exhaust pipe?Air filter clogged?
Any suggestions much appreciated,Tony

I believe the best way to keep a diesels exhaust clean is by the frequent use of a heavy right foot when the engine is at full running temperature, IE when the car is under load such as pulling away through the gears. I tend to do this once a week if I am on my usual commute.
I do find if I have been poodling along in slow traffic at flat cap pace for mile after mile this can result in a bit of extra black smoke on first acceleration. Therafter it is fine current car has 128K miles VAG TDI and I have used this technique for the past 100K.
Of course a dirty air filter could affect the amount of fuel / air mix, unburnt fuel would cause black smoke and it is such a simple and cheap thing to check and replace in any case.
My parents have just set off to catch a Ferry from Southampton, before they went I had a quick look at the traffic england site.
It looks as if the M1/A14/M6 area is all closed. Has there been some major incident?
I've suggested M1/A42/M42/M40/A34 and hope that it isnt too bad by the time they get down there. Read more
Apparently the truck is carrying fireworks and it went through the central reservation. The driver was unfortunately killed.

A girl I know is selling her car later this month, and has agreed a sale with her friend. She is looking for a mid size hatch or estate and with a £5k budget the Focus is her favourite option.
She commutes 60 miles daily, with greater distances (300miles+) monthly visiting friends. Her initial thought was to get a diesel, but I suggested a 2.0 petrol as repairs to a TDCi unit could prove expensive, with less servicing required on the petrol and possibly a newer model for her budget. There are so many different engine options she could spend all her spare time test driving them! She is a 'spirited driver' and wondered what would be the best option for a good blend of overtaking performance and ride comfort. MPG is not critical, but 35+ on a run would be good!

"I think she still hankers after a SWB lightweight LR V8, but without the refuelling costs...previously paid for by HMG."
I can imagine why that may be better than any Focus !! (TIC of course)
Bounce - following the re-instatement of BB's link for the reasons given and after a rather heavy hint was dropped in a post in Tech. Sorry BB.
