A friend living in London (no car) wants to hire a self drive FX4 taxi next Sunday/Monday. He has had no joy in sourcing one so far. Any ideas where he can hire one? Many thanks in advance. P.S. No I do not know why a Mondeo will not do!

So was I bt.
But the reason bez means nothing to us is that we are IGNORANT and UNCULTURED.
And revelling in it. I trust you are too?
I have a 1997 r reg volvo v70 xc the coolant system pressurises after a few miles of driving, and it over heated, i took it to the garage where they said the head gasket had gone, there is no oil in the water nor any water in the oil, they said they didnt know why it was pressurising but the head gasket was gone.
Is this a fair description of why it wouldbe over heating? since they quoted me £1000 to change the gasket.
I have seen an advert on the web for thermoseal, it apparently offers a money back guarrentee on the item if it doesnt work and it states it can repair any damage to head gaskets, at only 60quid is it worth trying if it is the head gasket thats gone?
ANy advice would be greatly appreciated.
regards
Peter

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but using any of those sealers you have to remember to take the thermostat out or it can seal it up. I would give the sealer a go, as some of them can work for quite a while and are cheaper than the alternative. Good luck with it..
Yesterday for the first time I went in a Fiat Croma Taxi, nothing special about that but when I got out of the back I felt quite travel sick... when I was younger my folks had a Ford Granada with rubber strips or grounding strips I think they were called
So why do we use them any more ?, did they work and what has changed to stop them being sold ? and would they make a difference to a Fiat Croma ?

I remember those plastic grounding strips - that wore away so quickly they only touched when you were fully loaded. In the '80s I had them fitted to my cars as my (then) young son complained, once, of feeling sick - I no longer used them in the '90s but without any concious decision being made.
More recently we used to go out "to the country" as a group and one member was prone to feeling sick, but was ok when we put her in the front passenger seat.
Hello,
A friend of mine has recently had his car written off as Cat D for £1200. It is a 2000 Peugeot 106 Quiksilver with ~100k on the clock. The damage was purely cosmetic, however, there is a dent in the rear quarter which was estimated at over £700 just for labour, so the insurance company wrote it off.
If he were to buy back the car and I buy it, would anything need to be done in order for myself to insure it and put it back on the road? There is no structural damage, the repair was just too costly to complete.
Cheers Read more
Nope just insure it as normal, you may need to get a new MOT if the insurance Co. keep the old one. Cat D doesn't need a VIC check either & won't have it's V5C marked.
My 38k Mondeo has just started having an intermittent problem. It looses power.
It runs but only revs very slowly - I just got out accelerated by a double decker bus!!
I've noticed that when this happens the temperature gauge also stops working. If I stop, switch off and then on again (rebooting it? :-) ) it revs OK.
I presume it's the engine management gubbins and it's due for a service in about another 1k miles or so, so I will mention it then. Just wondered what sort of cost it's likely to be
Or any confirmation what the cause is.
Thanks
Mark

OK thanks
I've booked it in for a service and told them what the problem was and he said it probably needs code reading - sounds like they know the right words if nothing else! ;-)
Going to be an expensive week; our other car (an X reg Rover 25) is having service and MOT next week as well! *gulp*
Hi, noticed some threads with focus having very similar problems but with a different accompanying symptom.
My speedo drops to zero intermittantly. This is usually at (or just after) start up. The speedo dropping also coincides with the car jumping in low gear at low speeds although the jumping stops once i'm getting towards 30mph. When the speedo kicks back in the jumping stops.
No one else with the speedo dropping seems to have the problem with the jumping so not sure if the remedy is the same as others?
Is this something i should get sorted or is it ok to live with?
Thanks a lot.

To quote from Haynes - " besides driving the speedometer, the speed sensor signal is used by the ECU as one of the parameters for fuel system-related calculations" I would recommend getting it changed. Cost me £22 for the part and £44 labour at my local garage. Have not had a problem since!
Renewed RFL via web on 15/10/07. New disc arrived 08.30 today.Top marks to DVLA + Royal Mail.

In fairness the general feedback about DVLA customer service on this site is pretty positive. My recent contacts (one a paranoid contact about my motorcycle entitlement) were excellent. Most of the fleet's tax discs have been online applications of late - never a problem. I paid a visit there once and went to the department that manages the incoming mail, its mind boggling the volume of mail they get in a shift, truly mind-boggling, and despite the cynical comments from some quarters the fact that they make some money on the side from number plates is remarkable, if only certain other Government Depts were so efficient.

PU without his Mod Hard Hat on !
My wife's 98 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec Auto has a misfire/stutter when driving but the problem doesn't show up when the car is stationary (or on the Ford diagnostic testbed)
The car momentarily looses power and then picks up again and drives OK. (until the next time)
The car has been recently serviced by Ford and the CVT has been checked and is OK.
The speedo needle always "flickers" slightly when the car is being driven but I haven't noticed it going to zero or anything during tha actual "stutter"
Any ideas? Read more
An update - Problem solved !!!
Got the car back from the garage 2 weeks ago and wife has been driving it with no problems.
After checking just about everything the garage checked the crankshaft position sensor and found it was mis-aligned. They cleaned it and re-fitted it properly and the car runs fine.
Why a mis-aligned crankshaft sensor would cause the car to mis-fire intermitently I have no idea (I would have thought it would mis-fire continuously) but it does seem to have cured the problem.
Anyway, all fingers and toes are crossed that the problem stays away (makes driving a bit difficult) and MANY MANY thanks to POLAR FORD in Runcorn and Screwloose and Wicked_Buffy for their help.
this started after the car went in for a service; the car seemed to be missing as I drove away. The mechanic said that there was a plug lead not fitted properly and all was OK until now (a few months ago)........the car starts and runs fine but after a normal run if I have to stop for a short time the car then misfires, as if its not running on all cylinders,,,,it smooth no pops or bangs but it only happens under the situation above, I was wondering if there could be a faulty plug fitted that was failing under high temperature..any ideas. Now sorted it was one of the coils, got a new one and all is now OK.....plugs are NGK....thanks for replies.

That is quite a high sand cliff. But a lot of them are that shape, a better than 45 degree slope becoming nearly vertical right at the top.
I have been in a LWB Land Rover carrying five or six people and a lot of gear that climbed a couple of cliffs of the same sort - not as high as the one in the film of course, but quite high enough. To my amazement the driver didn't use 4wd and tried to get up in third gear. The car didn't make it, so he depressed the clutch and ran backwards down to level ground, then did it again in second, and still in 2wd. It was fairly alarming - the car was totally stripped, without even a windscreen - especially at the very top, where I was convinced, as the front wheels kicked up over the vertical last couple of feet, that the car was going to fall over backwards with me under it. However after pawing the air for what seemed like several seconds, it came down with a crash on top and drove merrily on its way.
Some of these desert men are utter lunatics, I kid you not.
