A friend living in London (no car) wants to hire a self drive FX4 taxi next Sunday/Monday. He has had no joy in sourcing one so far. Any ideas where he can hire one? Many thanks in advance. P.S. No I do not know why a Mondeo will not do!

A fairly horrible vehicle to drive. Might be a better idea to hire a later one with turbo and power steering and disc brakes.

Google "Taxi rental repair" and take it from there
e.g.
www.sunrisetaxis.co.uk/
www.taxi-mart.co.uk/taxigar.aspx
Once you have spoken to one of them I would expect them to point you to a suitable source.
There is a Taxi repair /sales company in Surbiton but no idea if they would do a short hire.

It is certainly possible to hire one but the problem I can see is that the hire company will almost certainly require any potential hirer to possess a Hackney carriage licence, considering that any cab on there hire fleet will almost certainly be plated and it is an offence to drive a plated vehicle without holding a hackney carriage licence.

There are sure to be unplated ones for hire (films and so on).

I understand that, if you live in certain parts of London, you can hire these cabs on a short term basis, and can even have someone else drive you around in it.
Only problem arises, apparently, if you want to go South of the river after dark.

Does OP want to drive in the bus lanes?

I used to work in the fleet department of a large FTSE 100 comapny and our Chairman had one for trips in London the reasoning was
Economy - he could take 3 others and conduct a meeting - in the front was a fax machine and printer for his laptop - also his driver could park outside the majority of buildings in the city without being moved on !!

There was a "civilian" version of the FX4, called the FL2, though I think it's a pretty rare beast.

Stephen Fry has a taxi for driving round london in
|
So has the Duke of Edinburgh. I used to fancy one with a Rover V8 transplant and power steering. They are commodious vehicles with a small turning circle.

Bez from the happy mondays has got one too - his was featured on pimp my ride and given the bling treatment!

>>Bez from the happy mondays
I was born in the first half of the last century. Is this why it means nothing to me?

So was I bt.
But the reason bez means nothing to us is that we are IGNORANT and UNCULTURED.
And revelling in it. I trust you are too?
