I have just sold my car to someone from Poland. Filled out the logbook as you do. Gave him his slip. Will send off my logbook to DVLA.
I have noticed on the form that i will still be responsible for my car till DVLA gets the logbook. I have put the time i sold the car next to the date. What happens if the new owner decides to speed and gets flashed by the speed camera etc? Where do i stand if the address he has given is false etc?
Just me being worried

Take a photocopy of the logbook before you send it off. The DVLA may be one of the best run govt depts in the country, but they still aren't perfect. You can't be convicted of anything after the car has been sold but you need to ensure that you're not relying on a civil servant to help if you need to prove your defense.

Whenever I sell a car I always write down a piece of paper (two actually), I write down something like "sold as seen to so and so for this much etc.." then date/time sign and get the buyer to do the same, I keep one paper with me and hand out the other to him.

"sold as seen ......
Lots of info here regarding the legality/validity of that phrase. tinyurl.com/2cu9ee

What about 'sold at less than half price after purchaser poked a hole in the n/s front wing with his thumb'?
Was my Lada purchase legal I ask myself...

Has anyone experienced a buyer who gave false address or dodgy money/cheques. What did you do and where would you stand?
|
Yes. I flogged an old Metro for fifty quid. I suspected the address given was false ( I knew the area, and didn't think the road was that long), but what can you do?
DVLA wrote to me asking me to confirm the address, as it could not be deciphered. I replied asking them to send a copy of it as I didn't keep a copy. I never heard any more.

Didn't have one with a false address, but did have a guy turn up in a battered old Luton van, no tax and cracked screen etc. Told us he had got a lift off of a mate (van was parked just out of sight on main road) then drove off in the car he had just bought off of us (via ebay), left it 2 days and van still had not moved so dropped him an email letting him know that vehicles that were left in the same area as his van have in the past been vandalised etc (they hadn't as it is a very good area) - just a rouse to let him know we knew it was his van (he had bought it 2 weeks before on ebay - we just looked at his purchase history!!!) - within 24hours the van had gone and he dropped a very nice email back thanking me for letting him know.
All ended as it should with no nastiness just an understanding between 2 people that both knew exactly what was going on!!!!!!!
