3 or 5 door?

I was willing to sacrifice substance for style on this occasion (well....for the wife actually) I think it looks great in 3 door, but slightly.....er.....old personish (Agila comes to mind for some reason) in 5 door. I appreciate you need arms like a baboon to get the seatbelt, but wife is a Yoga freak and very supple......nice eh?

My 2003 406 HDI Estate has always had a useless handbrake, but I have found an easy cure.

Since the handbrake uses a drum within the rear disc, it never gets any wear on the linings, and in fact I don't think mine had ever got properly bedded in.

Simply run (preferably down a steepish hill or two to avoid fuel wastage) with the handbrake firmly on,to bed in the brake linings properly, and the handbrake will subsequently work much better. It might then be worth re-adjusting using a screwdriver through the hole on the drum, to maximise the benefit.

Vauxhall recommended almost the same thing (except to not put the H/B full on, but only until resistance was felt) for the Mk3 Cavalier and Vectra-B, which also has drum brakes for the handbrake if rear discs are fitted.

Found this whilst looking at a Battery website, may be a useful item to put in your tool kit.

Wouldn't work on a Volvo as they require the ignition to be off for ten minutes before disconnecting the battery for all the hardware to shutdown properly.
Disconnect the battery before it has done this and it will light up like a Christmas tree afterwards. This requires a trip to the local dealership for a reset and a quick forty or fifty quid drain of the wallet.

Just wondered if there is any particular practical reason for the plethora of diverse mounting of radio aerials on vehicles. Those on the roof / wing areas do nothing for the asthetic appearance and are vulnerable to malicious / accidental damage whilst others are a more discreet device on the rear of the roof or rear screen and some are totally unseen re incorporated into the rear screen etc.

Remember the XR4i-the one with the double wing spoiler? It had an electric aerial on the rear wing and was wired into the bootlight switch so that the aerial retracted when you opened the boot so the aerial and spoiler didn't tangle.

My 19 year old daughter's car (a 1999 Corsa 1.0), free-gifted by a kind neighbour a year ago, is dying (it has needed head gasket, exhaust, cat, clutch etc doing in last 6 months and clearly won't last too much longer based on the oil its losing).

She regrets not taking us up on the offer of old 1994 Volvo 440 "tip trip" car and needs to replace the Corsa with something cheap to insure and ideally more reliable than the Corsa has been.

Any suggestions for £2000 max?

thanks Read more

Sadly, it has been neglected based on the condition it is was in. Several owners, the last being an elderley lady, and an incomplete history. Less than 60k and should be a sweet engine but it it has been troublesome from day 1 and the locally recommended and apparently "reputable" garages that it has been to for repairs seem to have done more harm than good, each damning the work done by the one before but the same problems re-emerging.

Job just to keep the oil topped up right now and suspect further work will just be good money thrown after bad. Thanks for the suggestions thought, shall start to look this weekend and take the point about condition.

My local car parts shop sells mainly GM and Comma engine oil and other products for these two brands. I just would like to know how good or bad the engine oil is and other products if you've any experience of them? Are there engine oil of good quality and safe enough to use in diesel cars in particular as long as they meet the viscosity and grading (like CD, CF etc..) requirements? Read more

I have used Comma engine oils for the past twenty years and have no complaints. I currently run a Skoda Octavia (VW engine) and still use Comma.
May I suggest you go to the Comma Oils website and check out an engine oil that meets the VW specification.

With research increasingly indicating that use of hands-free moblies is as bad as drink-driving,

(see www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007...l )

how long before action is taken to curtail their use? And what sort of action do you think will be taken? Will it be government or the manufacturers who move first?

The headlamp level switch & dashboard illumination (dimmer) control switches are a pair.
last night I noticed that they had moved inwards about 10mm, rendering them unusable.
Has anyone experienced this and found an easy way to rectify this ?
It appears they may have popped off of a retaining clip.
thank you all Read more

If the arrangement is the same as that on my Passat clone, you can access the back of these controls by pulling off the fuse box cover. The cover is on the "end" of the dashboard and is accessible when the driver's door is open.

Good morning

I will shortly be getting my Fabia VrS back from the repairers following theft damage. and I will be wanting to trade it in to get rid of the associations of the theft.

I've been looking round at various options and the two stand-out choices seem to be either a C-max or a Citroen C4. The C4 in particular because it looks a bit interesting, has a lovely interior (to my tastes anyway !) and would appear to be a relatively cheap and easy car to own. It is also fairly unobtrusive - mind you, I though that about the VrS as well....

The model I'm looking at is the 1.6 Hdi VTR 5-door. Prefer diesel.

Does anyone have real-life experience of the C4 from an ownership perspective ?

Any comments appreciated.

Many thanks

I had a C4 1.6 HDI VTR+. It was a smashing car! I did not have a moments problem with it, the fit and finish was superb for the cost. It was rapid enough and frugal. Seats were extremely comfy for me (6' 3") Although I changed it after a year for a Saab Cabriolet (a real mid life crisis....ie Heart Attack) I am actually going back to the C4 VTR+

Best price I can see anywhere is via uk-car-discount.co.uk which is where I got my first one from. If I get a good p/x offer on the Saab....it's game on.
