Would it still work though if the ciggy lighter is only live when the ignition key is switched on?

Good question DD,
So i found this:

Simply plug the unit into your car's cigar lighter, turn on your ignition and then change your battery. The unit supplies power to your vehicle's electrical system whilst the vehicle's battery is disconnected.

What's more - the unit even recharges through your vehicle's cigar lighter socket.

Turning on the ignition switch will cause a higher current drain than if it was left off and the connection was made across the battery wires.

That might be handy on Merc's - they can need all kinds of resets (like the ABS and elec windows etc) after a battery change.

Wouldn't work on a Volvo as they require the ignition to be off for ten minutes before disconnecting the battery for all the hardware to shutdown properly.
Disconnect the battery before it has done this and it will light up like a Christmas tree afterwards. This requires a trip to the local dealership for a reset and a quick forty or fifty quid drain of the wallet.
