Hi all, Ive just been given an old Honda Accord to use while my Rover 416 is off the road....Its a 1986 2.0 EX and although 20 years old, in very good condition with only 56000 on the clock. It runs like a dream but the only thing Ive had to do was to cover up a small crack in the exhaust pipe with a bandage (from Halfords). Ive done a neat and secure job, and covered up quite a way past either side of the crack...its actually on the pipe rather than at a join with a box, or on a box itself. I just wondered if a good repair job like this would be acceptable in a MOT test as its due in a couple of months, and this is the only fault i can find that it might fail on. There is no blowing at all now, and no leakage of any fumes from the repair. Thanks in advance for any help with this. Read more

For six years i have been suffering from a bad back and have trouble walking some distance. These do not affect my driving. My car is not adapted in any way. Have recently been awarded a high mobility rate of disability living allowance. So this in a way labels me as 'disabled'. Do i have to inform my motor insurance? I assume you may have to if you lost a limb or are paralysed and need to have your car adapted.

I have applied for road tax fee exemption, in another words i will be getting my road tax for free.

Just wonder if the premium will go sky high Read more

Your ins co need to be told if you have a condition that is DVLA notifiable.

My ins co didn't want any details from me about my disability because it is not notifiable and I am, therefore, 'fit to drive'. They did take note of the fact that the car has a wheelchair hoist fitted and they know it is for MY wheelchair.

Road tax exempt, VAT exempt car.

Interesting programme tonight ( Trevor McDonald 8pm) re how diversions affect our driving attention.
It showed Merseyside police, even after the increased penalty for mobile use, nicking drivers at the rate of one every 4 minutes.
Yesterday I was on the southbound M40 near Warwick at about 4pm .There was a lot of spray and poor light .Probably about half of drivers were showing headlights, and we had the usual assortment of parking lights, foglights and no lights in use.
The road was very greasy.
I passed a rear-end shunt on the other carriageway , was in lane 2 and became aware of a Rover passing me in lane 3, probably less than 10 metres behind the car in front. I was going at 65-ish and it was passing me easily. I realised the driver had her phone propped on the steering wheel and was busily texting.
I did my best to get away from her but about 5 minutes later saw her again, still doing it.
What on earth does it take? Read more

I somehow do not envisage that the relatives of the lady motorist that I referred
to in my previous post who was killed as a direct result of a motorist
texting on a mobile phone whilst driving would entirely agree with your sentiments.

Of course I don't think texting while driving is a good idea at all.

It's exactly the sort of thing traffic plod would run you in for if they saw you doing it and if there were any traffic plod. But they wouldn't need a mobile law to do it. Without due care and attention would do fine.

Perhaps texting or phoning, messing with satnavs etc should count as an exacerbating factor in any accident investigation, and carry extra penalties.

I didn't say I thought people should text while they are driving. I said I didn't see the need for a specific law against it, and I still don't. In any case there's no point in forbidding something if there's no one to stop you doing it.

Simple question, really. I regularly see cars in lane 3 zipping along at between 90 and 100 mph, and was wondering if any of them get stopped or if the police turn a blind eye to these sort of speeds? How fast do you drive on the motorway?

For reference, if the road is clear I tend to sit at 80 on the speedo, but often have cars whizzing past going well above that. It's a new car so I haven't had a chance to compare the speed with what the TomTom says. Read more

I obviously need to get satnav for this alone.

So, if I underread by 10% and the cops allow a 10% tolerance then I can drive at an indicated 85 mph without any danger of being stopped. Excellent!

Question alhambra noise?
ifty

Hi,
my mk1 2000 alhambra tdi has a noise like the exhaust is blowing, took it to an exhaust specialist and they have said the exhaust is fine and the noise seems to be coming from the air filter housing , he said the housing was loose and not secured and this was causing the fault , any ideas? Going to be driving to Heathrow tomorrow @ 6am to pick someone up. Has anyone been there since last weekend's attacks and can tell me if the multi-storey short-stay car park is open and/or if I need to allow significantly longer? Read more

I always hover in Tescos ( Half a mile south of Hatton Cross towards Feltham and wait for a call.>>

Henry, when you have hovered and received the call, whereabouts do you do the actual pick-up? Are you able to avoid a short-stay car parking charge? I'll have to pick SWMBO (plus large case) up from terminal 4 in mid-August. I have previously gone to the drop-off area adjacent to 'departures', but this may no longer be possible.
Cheers, Waino.

Hi,

I know there's a rule with Peugeots that the engine series is "hidden" within the VIN number (need to know the engine series in order to buy the correct stop-solenoid in case anyone's wondering!).

The VIN number in question is VF37AD9B2302XXXXX - can one of the Pug experts out there tell me which part of this gobbledygook is the engine series?! Answers on a postcard please!

Greg :-) Read more
