The petrol engine on my 5 1/2 year old Passat uses about 1ltr of oil every 2 to 3 months. I do about 8.000 miles a year, mostly 7 mile runs to work. The car has covered just over 40,000 miles now and has always been serviced at a VW dealer.
Is this normal?
Prior to the Passat I had a 15 year old 1.3 petrol Golf with 60,000 miles on the clock that never used a drop. Why? Read more
My niece in Birmingham recently had her Golf broken into and the driver's air bag assembly was stolen . Nothing else was touched . On reporting the matter to the police she was informed that hers was the third V.W.airbag theft reported in 24 hours .The main dealer was able to repair the car without delay so there was obviously no parts shortage to explain such an odd theft .What's this all about? What possible use are the airbags put to? As far as I know they don't fail very often thus creating a black market demand and the removal is a hazardous and quite skilled job .Someone enlighten me please! Read more

Hi
I have a 10-yr old Primera. There is a sticker on the sun visor that says to have the air bag system serviced(?) every 10 years.
I'm guessing that this is something that really has to be done but just wanted some opinion from people on it.
Does it have to be performed by Nissan or can a local garage or specialist do the same job but a lower price?

Have spoken to Nissan today and of course it needs to be done because the airbags have a shelf life and there's a possibility that they may not deploy in the event of an accident. Cost to replace - £792 (£316 each side + £169 labour).
Phoned my local 'backstreet' garage that I use for my servicing and they are of the opinion that the airbag warning light will tell you if there's a problem with the system and if you're in an accident that's serious enough for the airbags to deploy in a 10-yr car you're in a spot of trouble anyway.
Needless to say, at that price, I'll take my chances.
Chris
I find it amusing seeing today's modern cars described as having "body coloured bumpers" most modern cars do not have a separate bumper as such due to the way they are designed to assist airflow. I mean, would they even dare painting some of them black, they would not sell if they did !.
Similar in a way to seeing houses described as having a low level bathroom suite who wants to "pull the chain". Read more
My insurance company would sort it. It's what I pay them for.
That's terribly blase.
It's what you'd be paying them more for the following year too.
Just found a screw in one of my Bridgestone 17" tyres :-( What's the min distance from the edge of the trim for a repair? I make it about 1/2 inch. Its a large screw and the tyre is going down slowly.
Also now worried they'll scratch the alloy which is in mint condition, and please no comments about having alloys or expensive tyres.
Cheers,

>>I'd like to know where that is, please!
Its a place in South Derbyshire, I'll refrain from naming it seeing as I described it as spit and sawdust, but the thing to remember is that mostly it is down to the care taken by the individual doing the job rather than the place that you go to.
J1mbo, whether they will repair your tyre will depend on various factors if it is that close to the edge, but the more high performance the tyre is (low profile and high speed rating) the less likely they are to want to repair it. That said if you go to one of the big chains they will probably try to sell you a new tyre anyway, whether it can be repaired or not. Where as the local independant (back to the spit and sawdust places) may be inclined to just repair the tyre whether it is recommended or not. At the end of the day the choice is yours...
I came across this in the 'humour' section of a CRX owners' website- hope it gets past the moderators!

Can anyone tell me what the service intervals are for a 06-reg Renault Kangoo please?

have seen countless postings with problems on door wiring on 306's.
But anyone actually repaired 1 and know what the job is like? Are loom parts available from Peug? or from a breaker? Unlikely to be any better if so. Or is it better to make up your own part loom?
All comments welcomed. Read more
funnily enough ive just finished repairing another one this afternoon, ive done loads before. ive never used a replacement loom from peugeot think there overpriced, i just wire in a new section of wire for each wire thus both repairing and extending the loom to prevent future breakages.
take the door off is easiest, i then cut and solder each wire one at a time adding about a 5cm length of wire in. also, check the continuity of the wires both sides of the loom with a meter before soldering to check there not broke in the connector. the wires i have had broke in the connector ive just ran a new wire outside of the connector to the right wire on the inside of the door and then cable tied it to the connector once finished.
worst ive seen had 5 broken wires in it, of which the two small white ones wrisere broke so had to do some testing before joining them.
all in all quite a simple job if you can use a soldering iron and work in a logical manor

Hello all.
I am looking at replacing my 5 yr old Seat Alhambra with either new SUV (possibly the new Peugeot 4007 or Citroen C Crosser) or, alternatively getting a 2-3 yr old quality SUV such as the Tourag or XC90. I tow a caravan and need a fairly heavy tow car. If I went for the new Pug or Citroen I would need to get a loan of about £5k
The Volvo/ VW at 2-3 yrs old would mean no loan and thats probably the route I will go and i will go for 2.5l diesel but of the 2 which is better?!!
Many thanks for your help.

Cost of big caravan + big 4x4 = lots of holidays + normal car?
Dry wit much appreciated !

My ZX 1.9TD requires no oil at all between changes (every 6k / 3 months) and its on 109k, roughly 12 years old. Using 1L of oil per 1,000 miles in a huge amount IMO.
