If you or those growing children do not already have a passport for your trip later in the year then now might be the best time to get one.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6470179.stm

A requirement for adults applying for a passport for the first time to attend face-to-face interviews will be gradually introduced from May, the Identity and Passport Service said.

As always, Dalglish, your ability to search the internet for evidence that backs up your point of view knows no bounds. Rather unusually, this time you have failed to trawl this site to find someone saying something different from what they once said on here. No doubt you tried.

You are right, a job working in a British Consulate is indeed "a very long jolly for the foreign office staff and their counterparts in the host country".

Cars in Motorway Crosswinds handle better than others - Why??

My wifes car 'Pug HDI' is a beast driving on a motorway in a crosswind, but my ZX TD, I use for travelling to work has no problems at 70mph. I drove a Pug 307 HDI and a Skoda Octavia TD a few days ago and both of those are bad too.

Which car would you say is good in a crosswind travelling at 70mph??

Hi Vin,

I like the concept of the neutral steer point - it's so simple and intitive an explanation.

Taking the neutral steer point idea, its position relative to the c of g determines whether a car oversteers or understeers. BTW, I'm not talking about the on limit behaviour when you have gross sliding of a tyre a la Clarkson, but more the underlying, more fundamental, behaviour.

Hi,
vehicle is volvo v70 2.5tdi with msa 15.8

I recently had the bottom intercooler pipe come off. This happened in France with a ferry to catch, fully loaded vehicle, children etc. no tools. I chose to drive the 80 miles to the ferry (low speed, low revs - lots of smoke) rather than risk missing the boat.

Once back in the UK, I checked the car over and found the problem with the intercooler hose. Fixed that and continued to home.

The check engine light came on as soon as the hose blew. After a while back in the uk it went off again. However the next time I drove it the cel went back on as soon as I got over 3000 rpm. Performance is down, economy is up

I have tried to find a diag tool that will work so that I can check the sensors but Im not having any luck. Spoken to a couple of volvo indys - who dont seem to be certain that they can read the codes (msa 15.8 seems to have been used for only a year) and I would rather not have to go to the main dealer - because I would expect that the codes will need reading a couple of times and that will get very expensive very quickly.

What is likely to be a problem as a result of running with the hose off ? Any suggestions before I start stripping things down to clean and inspect? EGR?

thanks

Cheers Screwloose.

I emailed them last week asking if it would be compatible (the coverage list stops at V70 1998) because I was told on one of the volvo forums that VOL-FCR wouldnt work. I've not had a reply yet.

My Colleague's 02 206 CC suffered a loss of brake fluid last week. Took it to Peugeot, who were surprised to find the fluid reservior had a split in it. They claim they've never seen this happen on a 206 before. (Wasn't too expensive to repair c. £40)
The Servo was replaced a month ago, and she has been driving over rough ground recently.
Question is: Could this be due to some mishandling when servo was replaced OR can driving over rough ground
do this (seems unlikely) and has anyone had reservior split on their car and what caused it?
Maybe screwing the cap down too vigoursly?
Thanks
S.

Saw the Bill for this, I noticed there was no labour charge.(ie labour 0.00)
Although they didn't admit anything, they were apologetic they didn't spot this during Servo swap.

Reading between the lines, sounds like they believe that there is some possibility they could have done it..
...which is better than some dealers I can think of...then again they did come in the top 3 peugeot dealers in UK for Customer service...

Hello,

Clarifcation required:

An employee or director uses his/her own car for business mileage, the employee does under 10,000 miles a year, say 8000 miles, and claims 40p/mile for the mileage incurred via an expense claim detailing journey info though does not provide VAT receipts for fuel purchased.

Thus the employer pays the employee 8000 x 40p = £3200.

Under HMRC AMAP rules can the employer claim VAT back on the £3200 even though the fuel purchases are not receipted?

Thanks. Read more

Phoned HMRC, it is apparently a technical question so I have now e-mailed them, will post back when I get a reply.

It could also be the clutch pedal switch sticking, that would give the same problem. Not expensive to fix either.

Question Vectra MIL
Chris M

It's a 2001 1.8 and I foolishly gave it a wash and vacuumed it out on Saturday. I don't know what came over me!

Anyway, there was a bit of moving the car about where the engine wasn't running for long. Not something it likes when the engine is cold, but not usually a problem whilst it's still slightly warm. Started it Sunday morning and it was running very rough, but cleared after a minute or two and has run fine since. However, the MIL came on and stayed on (obviously only when engine running) until my way home from work this evening, when for some reason, it didn't come on.

It did the same thing a year or two back. At that time I took it to my local indy who attached Tech 2 and reported no fault codes. I thought I'd have to do the same thing this time, as I thought once the light was on it stayed on until cleared by a Tech 2.

Do / should they clear themselves? Read more

MIL is standard trade [and EOBD] parlance. M-alfuntion I-ndicator L-ight.

Although not exclusively an engine ECU acronym, it seems to have become accepted as such.

Malfunction indicator lights on other systems seem to just get referred to as that system's light: "Airbag light;" "ABS light" etc.

Last week I had to replace the original nine and a half year old battery on the Mondeo. Starting had become more laboured until, one morning after a frost, the battery couldn't turn the engine over at all.

The car seemed to go better with the new battery and I thought it must be psychological, but I've just filled the tank again and achieved 40.12 mpg on the last tankful in mixed motoring conditions. Sounds daft, I know, but could a new battery possibly improve engine performance? Read more

Most modern ECU's turn off the A/c when you go to
wide open throttle and only turn it back on as you
ease off the accelerator.

I'm going to have to try this now

What do you guys reckon? Has the build quality improved? Would you recommend one? I'm worried about reliability issues. You know the standard issue with French cars :) Read more

I've just returned from a week in Switzerland with a hired 207. It was OK. The minuses: unattractive front - bulging lights, huge mouth-shaped air intake; small boot space; uninspiring diesel engine (don't know the size/power - probably the basic one); hard suspension; excessive assistance with the power steering. The pluses: very quiet, even at 100 kph; steering/handling accurate, positive; economical; good brakes. All in all, better on the motorway than elsewhere.

Not nearly as much fun as the 205 was - nor as comfortable!
