What do you guys reckon? Has the build quality improved? Would you recommend one? I'm worried about reliability issues. You know the standard issue with French cars :)

Its built in Eastern Europe so I cannot imagine them to be any better than the 206 it replaced.
|
Wasnt the 206 built, amongst other places, in Britain hence the poor quality.

Ideally I'd like a Japanese car, but there's nothing within my budget (8k) that is suitable for a young guy in his 30s :)

It was built in Ryton in the Midlands in the old rootes factory. So in a way the 206 was the last Hillman.

Have you read HJ's road test?: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=211
Just got a 207GT 110HDi 3 Door with a JBL HiFi upgrade and so far has been a vast improvement over the 206 on almost all counts. More space, much more solid feeling and a quality interior; the only penalty is that it is heavier. The 110 HDi engine has been criticised by the journos for being lethargic. The secret is to keep it on song between just under 2000 rpm and 3500 rpm and it pulls well. It's just the way they're set up.
I have also tested the base 1.4 8V petrol and the 1.4HDi. As HJ says, the level of standard kit is good and you get an even better ride as they're not on 17" alloys.
The 207 is produced in more than one factory and mine was built at Poissy, France.

Im a 206 owner, I also had the misfortune to be leant a 207 for the day.
207 is a god awful car, a total disappointment & letdown, I cant put what I really think because of the swear filter but its the worst PSA product ive ever driven!
106, 205, 206, 305, 306, 405, 406, Saxo, C3 & Xantia all drive a lot better then the 207.
My 206 was built in France, dont worry the build quality is just as rubbish as the ones lashed together at Ryton.

I took delivery last week of the same engine and hi-fi wrapped in a C4 coupe body.
That JBL woofer does 'kick ass', as I believe the younger generation are wont to say these days, doesn't it!

I pick up a 207 cc on Sat. The What car and other reviews say the quality is much improved from the 206 and the Coupe cabriolet in particular should be compared to the VW eos and Ford focus cc in terms of build quality, but at about £5k cheaper. The 207 hatch also seems a good buy to me.

Well I can't help wondering whether the bad feedback is based on older French models. It seems that French cars have improved considerably in the last couple of years

I had a 207 for three weeks recently. It was a much nicer car than I was expecting and I came to like it a lot. It felt very solid and (sorry, former Ryton workers) far better designed and built than the 206 I'd once test driven.
The only minuses were the computer which I didn't understand (it may have been faulty) and the annoying whiny sound of the engine (I never did discover which one it was).
|
I've just returned from a week in Switzerland with a hired 207. It was OK. The minuses: unattractive front - bulging lights, huge mouth-shaped air intake; small boot space; uninspiring diesel engine (don't know the size/power - probably the basic one); hard suspension; excessive assistance with the power steering. The pluses: very quiet, even at 100 kph; steering/handling accurate, positive; economical; good brakes. All in all, better on the motorway than elsewhere.
Not nearly as much fun as the 205 was - nor as comfortable!
