I have a R21 Savanna on a 'J' plate which has done about 120K miles. It is coming up for its MOT and I have been doing what I can to keep the repair bill manageable.
The bit that I cannot sort out and which is driving me crazy are the CO emissions, they are at around 12% and no matter what I adjust or do, it does not go below this.
To date I have;
Changed the air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. In the last 9-10 months, I have changed all the HT leads and performed an oil filter and oil change.
The mixture has been weakened as much as is physically possible but the problem persists. I am at the end of my tether and have run out of ideas at this point and the MOT is now 5 days away....
I have heard that the Solex carburettors on these are not very good and are prone to problems, elsewhere I have heard that replacing with an equivalent Weber model can help. But before I get to this rather expensive point, I was hoping that someone might have advice that can help me get these emissions back to where they belong (3.5% according to latest DOT figures!!!)
Thanks in advance,

Hi all.
i have a mondeo 1.8td estate on a S reg 98. the problem im having is that it isnt very quick, dont laugh!!!! what i mean is that the turbo doesnt seem to be cutting in at its full petential, you can feel it cut in at around 2200-2600 or something like that but it has no effect on the speed. its that slow i dont risc overtaking or pulling out . i have know idea what it could be, i have changed the glow plugs, air filter, fuel filters. i cant see know obvious leaks, there is no spillages on my drive , i cant smell fuel when driving or when its idling. thats the first problem
secondly............... on the same car, my air bag light came on it started to flash at me , i was told to change the things beside the seats, the things the the seat belts plug into , apparantly the hold a charge of somesort and the old ones may have become discharged, so i changed them and the lights still flashing at me! any ideas.
any help on these matters would be so gratfefully received as i am a 1 person working family and cant really afford to go to a garage for them to give me some cock n bull story.
thanks

Could someone please explain the benefits of a dual mass flywheel over a conventional flywheel, and are these benefits sufficient to counter the high level of problems/breakdowns associated with this technology.

LandRovers with diesel engines did, and possibly still do, have an additional sort of rubber-bonded flywheel bolted externally on the gearbox output flange.
I fitted one to my petrol LandRover and it had an incredible effect of smoothing the transmission, and made gearchanging much easier because it eliminated the ricocheting effect as the long drive chain wound and unwound as the drive was released.
Being external it only took about 10 minutes to fit.
Advice appreciated! The car is a diesel 1.9 Citroen ZX with the same engine as fitted to Peugeot 405, etc.
Tracing a smell of diesel I've discovered that there is a significant leak apparently from the throttle spindle of the injector pump. There is noticeable play in the spindle and the handbook doesn't describe the internals of the pump, so my question is:-
Before I start pulling things apart is there a seal that is replaceable without having to completely dismantle the pump. I use it daily to get to work and don't want to maroon myself unnecessarily, so I'd like some idea of the potential scale of the problem before I start.
Thanks in anticipation Read more
Thanks for that. I did a quick search to see if the answer already existed but I must have missed it.
What a useful thing the internet can be!!!!!
Can anyone recommend a good vehicle for towing a boat occasionally - boat is 2000lb. We used to borrow a friends van but he no longer has it. Vehicle would need to be family of four (plus dog) friendly. Vehicle would have to be used as the family runabout. Read more
I friend of mine, new to boating, moored up at high tide and went home.
In the early hours of the morning, he got a rude phone call from the boat yard owner - could he come down straight away, as his yacht was hanging from the side of the dock, 10 feet above the water!
Nothing to do with towing a boat - but very funny!

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had this problem?
I have a Y reg vectra 1.8 petrol that starts to hesitate when the fuel gets down to about a quarter of the tank?
Is this likely to be a problem with the fuel pump? If so, why only when it gets down to a quarter?
Thanks
Mark

A family member is considering buying a 2-3 yr old used Volvo S60 D5.
Has anyone had any experiences of these cars, or the V70 estate equivalent ?
I would be grateful for feedback on economy, reliability, durability and dealers in particular. Read more
Same here. Mine has the biege interior but I have never had a reflection problem. The instrument cowl on top of the dash is in black anyway preventing it from being a problem.
I have a peugeot eurobus (taxi), that has been converted from a peugeot expert. I have spoke to other drivers with a eurobus and some say that they go through turbo's on a regular basis, 3 turbos in 105,000miles, this was not of too much concern as they were all replaced under warranty, but as the warranty lapses, the cost is down to the driver.
I looked on the internet and found something about the EGR Valve becoming gunged up and causing the turbo to fail. However, this was not specific to this vehicle, it was a general finding. The remedy to this was to have more frequent oil changes ie 6,000mls instead of the recommended 12,000mls. Has anyone had ant experience or knowledge of this? Read more
Oh I agree, perfect theory never translates well to real life.
Might be worth looking at fitting a diesel powered Kenlowe heater or similar though?
I noticed in H.J`s road test of the Peugeot 207 GT that he mentioned >>>it has a water-cooled turbo so you don?t have to worry too much about idling before you switch off.>>>
When one considers all the problems with seized turbo bearings/failures that have been noted on this forum over the years from Renault, Nissan & even Honda among many others, it seems odd that manufacturers have not adapted water cooled turbos more widely. It makes one wonder if they don`t factor in design weaknesses, to keep their main dealer workshops busy.
Does anyone know of any other manufacturers that are now switching to water cooling on their turbo models.???
