I am considering buying an A3 TDI sport - 2001. I have been told by the dealer that the car was chipped from the factory 110 bhp to 140bhp. I has the car overnight for a test draive and actually did not feel the car had any noticable addtional power compared to the 306 HDI (90) that I have. I know the 306 is quite niblle partly due to is weight but I thought you would feel a difference in a 140 bhp engine. It's not a deal breaker as the car is very nice and cleann otherwise. THere is no writted confirmation fo the upgrade only the dealer owner says he remembers this being done to the car by its first owner. ( the car was traded into the same dealer bewteen the 1st and 2nd onwer the 2nd owner and probably me).
Perhap s i could get an AUdi dealrer to 'plug the car in' ansee what the compluter reads?
ANy other views on the A3 TDI sprt woudl be good to know. Although i reckon i may be signing the deal in the next few days!

Doesn't the law state you have to park the "normal" way round due to rear reflectors? It has been known for the police to ticket cars who are parked facing the wrong way i.e. downward on upward traffic and vice-versa.
However that picture shows a parking attendent writing the ticket so that will be for the parking bat infringement thingy.
Did the Easter break Uni run to collect daughter from Bristol yesterday and a very pleasant run it was to. Both the A34 & M4 were free running and relaxed. No idiots, no 'close ones', no aggression, no incidents. No one flashing their lights behind me 'cos I dared to overtake in the fast lane at 'only 80!'. I know it was Sunday but previously the traffic has been very heavy and jammed up on the return trips during late afternoon. This time , nothing. In fact the A34 was almost empty!
This may be boring but it felt like what motoring ought to be like, or was like years ago. It really was as if everyone that was out was enjoying themselves.
Just thought I'd mention it as so often there is only stress and aggression. Bet the Easter hols at home won't be so stress free! -- ifn fact I already know it won't! -- the head gasket has blown on daugher's golf and guess what, that's my fault!

Did a drive yesterday from West Yorkshire to Blackpool avoiding motorways (thanks TomTom) - mile after mile of country lanes, just me and the odd tractor. Super great fun in the MX5 with the roof off, reminds me why I like driving, a different world to the Mway grind and town rat-cage we're all used to these days.

My friend has a Ford Fiesta 1.1 N reg and the steering has become noisy at low speeds. Theres a grinding noise coming from the steering wheel when turning corners.
Would it be the steering rack? Or just a bolt come off somewhere?
I have noticed that theres a small bit of play in the steering wheel when 'wiggling' it from side to side.

Thanks to everyone for your help. Turned out to be a piece of plastic in the steering surround. Don't know where from or how it got in there but it has been removed and all is fine
The ( suggested) definition for this thead being,
* Design inadequacy that the manufacturer reasonably knows about but has let continue in production for more than 1 year*
To give focus, starting with current production cars and working back to the olden days.
For example,
I`m thinking of the cars that are known to blow their headgaskets at certain mileages and continue in production year after year. Where it seems the cost is left to the customer rather than redesigning the engine.
It seems the 1.2 Fiat Punto may fit this category.
Also the remaining ungalvanised cars such as seemingly the Ford KA, where new owners every continuing year seem shocked that it rusts.
Some thoughts,
You would think that the internet and the possibility of web searches incorporating the model name of the proposed purchase of car and the words `problems, faults, rust` would show the true picture, but despite internet in most homes, it seems that many do not bother to do this.
If we look at a design fault that typically occurs out of warranty and then multiply the customer costs in the thousands of cars purchased, it seems a grim situation when the faulty or inadequate design responsibility lies with the manufacturer.....
So, what do you know?

The A class that was 'finished' when it was noticed that it could be rolled if you swerved hard - Elk test?
Also on the A class, drop the engine to change the starter motor.
Cars where some of the plugs require massive amounts of work to change.
PSA steering rack boots on the NS, officially it's a rack out job.

I own a 306 hdi (2000) and went on a long run over the weekend. I thought it would be a good time for some injector treatment along the way. The car at the minute feels great, lovely and smooth so it was just because i had some in the shed. I drove around 400 miles at the weekend and thought it would give the injectors etc a good clean out.
The day after i noticed it was still quite smokey in the rear veiw mirror with headlights on the exhaust and without the car particularly being tested.
I was wondering what other things can be done as i have my mot comming in 2 months. The oil and all filters were changed 1000miles ago (3 weeks)
any suggestions?
ps can anyone tell me if the new millers power sport 4 diesel treatment is suitable for a 306 hdi? Read more
A dirty MAF sensor, boost leak (common at the joint to the inlet manifold) and a sticky EGR valve can all increase smoke. Try plugging the vacuum pipe to the egr valve and see if it makes any difference.

First Tuesday after BST starts - Bassets Pole will be busy, lots of bikes about.
The surprise was the one I followed from Lichfield to Rugeley, I really was dawdling as SWMBO's car goes on the drive before mine and she was 5 minutes behind me. The biker did not gain on me at all - and it wasn't a small bike or a learner. Was refreshing to see that they are not all lunatics.
I can understand them running on headlights but main beam is certainly inconsiderate. How would they feel if we all drove around on main beam?
I´m back in the UK to pick up the car this time, as Mrs Barchetta´s tour is over.
Any nasty roadworks/ bits to avoid on this route?
I´m in no particular rush. Ferry is ´booked´ for 1515 but I would imagine I can jump on a later one.
The A1(m) is easier for me to access than the M1, so I was thinking going A1-A14, past Stansted, M25 and round that way. Read more
Best not to muck around! Just do the M1 M25 etc timing it to avoid the worst of the traffic and keep your fingers crossed.
I have been looking at cars on ebay and autotrader and some of them having done up to 90k miles can be described as "mint". Is this possible? Surely even a 6 month old car will have at least a few stonechips? Have they just called the chips away folks and then described it as mint? Read more
Usually when anyone advertises as in mint condition its best to steer clear,seen many advertised like this and they turn out to be in not so good condition

For my sins I've bought a really cheap 05 Hyundai Elantra turbo diesel from a salvage auction. The car has no keys and no key fobs. The doors are unlocked so can gain entry to the fuse box and engine bay etc etc. What do I try first? Try the main dealer who'll probably take my eyes out with the replacement bits, or source second hand bits and get the dealer to reprogramme the fob? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Went to the dealership, Seafield Motors in Inverness, the service chappie was superb, expensive £60/hour but worth it. They got a new key cut from the VIN number, (£45 with Vat). I got a Alarm key fob from ebay for £24. 1.5 hours to re-code the key immobiliser and fob (£104 with vat), Appartently recoding a Master key is a longer process as access to a Hyundai computer database is needed for the Pin code for the ECU. Spot On I thought until I drove the car onto the drive way found diesel spilling everywhere, some swine has drilled a 10mm hole in the bottom of the fuel tank and pinched all my diesel. To replace the whole key set for everything brand new is around £650. The ignition switch alone is £261+vat, so I would say I'm lucky with this one. Need to look at how to repair the tank or go for a replacement one any Ideas anyone?
P.S. The rest of the car didn't look too bad body wise but an obvious poor repair to the offside, poor paint job masked over windows etc, spray drift. But It'll do me for a few years I hope,
quite possible that a tunningbox or similar was fitted and then removed on resale.
