Hi All,
I have a Pug 306 1.4 lx 1998. For over a year now I have been having a problem with random hesitation (loss of power) when under load between minutes 1 and 4 after starting the engine (hot or cold). When I say random it will happen randomly during that time period (1 to 4 minutes after starting) but it will nearly always happen at least once. When this happens ( usually when joining a large roundabout just after leaving work :( ) I either keep the fully accelerator depressed, slow down almost to a halt at which point the power comes back or I depress the clutch (release the load) rev the engine and feather the clutch in and out . I can start the car and leave it to stand and it will idle fine - as soon as I put some load on the engine it hesitates and sometimes dies. Once it has gone through its hesitancy patch all is fine for the rest of the journey until I switch off. Upon restart of the engine (hot or cold (although when the weather is very cold it seems to misbehave less) ) the whole thing happens again. I have had the stepper motor , the Lambda sensor and the MAP sensor all replaced. Upon each replacement things seemed ok for a day or so but then it went back to its old ways ( is this some thing to do with the ecu relearning things?). Anyway I am at my wits end with this problem ( as well as the power steering pump going , the AC compressor clutch and the permanently blinking air bag light despite changing sensors ---- arrrrrrgh) Any helpful advice gratefully received.

Yes I believe they do have the means to read the codes and that there were none showing :(

Question Mondeo lights
Beaks

I have a 2005 Mondeo and I have recently changed from a Primera. I do not think the dipped beam to be very good and sometimes struggle a bit on country roads with the lack of distance. The headlight surrounds are clean. Is it worth just changing the bulbs ?? Are they really any brighter, if so can any recommend one ?? Thanks... Read more

Mondeo lights aren't bad, but if you've come from a Primera with projector lenses I can understand why you think they are poor.

Philips now do some 80% brighter bulbs which are meant to be excellent, but they are difficult to find in stock at the moment. Ebay is probably your best bet.

We have just been quoted £90 plus cost of the bulb for replacing an in accessible headlight bulb in a Modus.
My dealer {edit by DD} say its an hours work.

How can dealers get away with this its still under warranty Read more

To me a blown bulb doesn't constitute a breakdown as you can still drive the car
without a problem.

I would argue that having an unroadworthy car *is* a problem! (and worse if you get done for it!).

Hello all,

I'm sure you'll know the answer - when is the SEAT Alhambra due to be replaced? I believe it's this year, but can't get anything more concrete than that.

Any ideas?

Cheers. Read more

Sorry for taking so long, but thanks to you both.

One for HJ here perhaps.......

Investigating an oil leak, our local mechanic has just informed me that the 'rear main oil seal' on our Focus needs replacing, which apparently means taking out the gear box and fly wheel and replacing the clutch plate etc.... I'm not mechanically knowledgeable so just reapeating what was said.

The car is a 2001 tdi saloon with 50K on the clock and we bought it from an independent dealer in December with a 3 month dealer warranty.

I have contacted the dealer who said "bring it in and we'll look at it"...... which I will do over the weekend.

Please can I have some advice on my consumer rights.... Is the dealer liable? Is it wear and tear? Can I expect a heated debate? If it comes to it can I threaten a small claims court?

None of these issues may arise if the dealer (as I hope) simply complies and sorts it for me but advice would be appreciated. Read more

Hello,
my V reg Xantia 1.8 16v (non hydractive) makes a strange whoosh kind of noise upon heavy, and sometimes not that heavy, braking. The noise is loud enough to be noticed from the outside. It is not related to the ABS which seems to work OK.
My front tyres have been changed recently (5000 miles ago) and are not top quality.
The braking does not appear affected, yet.
Thanks Read more

I recommend you post on www.frenchcarforum.co.uk, they will help

All i know is sometimes the rear caliper go out of line due to corrosion, then when you brake the pads are uneven over the disk and cause squealing, the remedy is to clear the corrosion form the back of the calipers.

Other than that have you checked all the pads to make sure the are even, also some cheap pads can cause noise.

Yesterday in a 10 minute period,I had two cars start to pull out of side roads in front of me,another start to reverse out of a side road and then,to finish it or me off, someone tried to reverse over me in a car-park.Is it because my car is black. It was full daylight. Read more

I'd say white is only fashionable with big wheels, a bodykit and a big engine and only looks good if it is immaculately clean.

Clean and shiny Focus ST in white - cool.

Dirty Focus LX - photocopier salesman doing 40k miles per year. Not cool.

The sun is on your back, the budgie is on its perch and `lady Madonna` issues from the 2 watt car radio. Yes, its a great July Saturday morning in 1969, you pop the bonnet on your parents drive and BMC`s green cast iron motor gleams back.
The long reach sparkplugs slip out easily in their copper greased, cast iron threads and yes, there it is again, down the plughole in a shaft of light, easily picked out by your 17 year old eyes....
*Mowog On Your Pistons* ( cue the theme music for lipstick on your coller)

Of course, at the time you never would believe that the reliability of an iron block and head would be lost, that technology would improve reliability. (Or that you would never tighten a sparkplug down again with such confidence.)

So from an engineering point of view, what went wrong with engine design? Here we are decades into the future and I can go out and buy a well known small car, *currently in production*, that is well known for popping its headgasket. (Not the obvious candidate and with an alloy head on an iron block.)

What's wrong with points?

Nothing at all, love 'em. You know the car will go gradually out of tune, but remain usable for say 5,000 miles. Then you simply chuck away the old ones, install new ones and set them with a cigarette paper, a strobe light and a dwell meter - much better way to set the points gap than a feeler gauge - and gap or replace the plugs, and you knew the thing would run the way it was supposed to for another 5,000 miles or so. Once you had learned the ways of a particular engine or type of engine the whole thing was a doddle and very cheap.
pugman406

Hi

I need help with my 2001 pug 406. I have recently noticed that the deadlocking system has stopped working. The central locking works perferct, from the fob or from usinf the key in the door.

I have asked peugeot, and they just said bring it a long and we'll have a quick look, £70ph quick look. Cant afford to pay for this at the mo, so would really appreciate it if anybody could offer some advice.

Thanks

I'm guessing you've already done this, but when using the key as opposed to the remote, have you locked the car,and then held the key for a further second,to activate the deadlock?

I don't have the remote for mine, and this is what I do.

Normally, I consider myself to be a very courteous driver - I try to let people out of junctions etc, far more than other people do in Leeds (except {deleted - DD} minicabs, 'cos I have a deep grudge against them). From now on, however, this is going to stop. In two hours of driving today, I let probably 30 cars in. Not one bothered to thank me. So you can make your own way.

* I note that this comes across as a bit of a rant, but I'm in a rotten mood since my £200 bike lights have packed in after the blasted smart charger crashed and overcharged the £80 battery, I've gouged a hooooge chunk of flesh out of my calf while on the bike, and I nearly got sideswiped today on the ring road roundabout by a car doing well over 100mph. By the police station, of all places. He wasn't even in sight when I joined the roundabout, and I was half way across when he shot across, just missing the back of the car. Read more
