Any views - good or bad - on Ford Focus four cylinder duratec engines - 1.8 and 2.0 ?

The 1.8 produces 125bhp and the 2.0 just 20 more. Is it worth the extra initial cost of the 2 litre, and extra insurance etc, and will I notice any difference in performance. Any real problems with them ?

I usually believe that a bigger engine works less hard and that you can end up with better mpg - but I could be wrong.

I think the 2.0 comes with electric steering, which some tests have said has not much feel - anyone any experience of that? Read more

The Mk 1 1.8 and 2.0 are the Zetec unit dating back to the early 90's, first used in the Escort and Orion in 1.8 form and later in the Mondeo Mk I in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 forms, not as refined as the 1.6 and 1.4 Focus Mk I's which are a Yamaha design, that being said my dad has a 2002 2.0 and it is fine. The 2005 on Mk II Focus uses the Duretec chain cam engines as per the Mondeo Mk III.

I have an '01 Passat estate. It has a tape player (with Gamma on the flap) and a single disc cd player in the dash.
Is there wiring in the boot for a multichanger like this here www.tiny.cc/3p7ad or will I have to go for this 6 disc in-dash changer, like this www.tiny.cc/SQwbU ?

Thanx

Don't waste your money. Buy an iPod or similar and a cassette adaptor. It's far more practical than CDs and the sound quality is easily good enough for the car.

I have a 2004 touran 2.0tdi - tonight there was a intermittent rattle from the timing belt area (under the cover) - the car has done 36000 miles

the rattle / ticking gets worse when the lights are on

IIRC, the alternator is driven by an auxillary belt on these engines. If it is driven by the cambelt, don't put the old one back on, get them to fit a new one. Just don't let them stuff you for the full cost as they have to remove it anyway!

If they import the saloon version of the new Dacia Logan (Built by Renault! it proudly says on the back) The model name? The Lumpi (seen recently in Montpellier)

Driving yesterday in the pitch black and noticed I could see Cat's eyes in my rear view mirror. Then slowed down turned my lights off and saw the cat's eyes were lit (there was no other light available to cause a reflection). Either I'm going mad or there are now "powered" cat's eyes - if so, why? What's the advantage - would be keen to know and also has anyone else noticed them. They were on a road between Worcester & Hereford by the way. Read more

They used to be fitted on the A590 around Greenodd too. Unfortunately the local boy racers thought it great sport to see how fast they could drive along the stretch without lights on, which defeated the safety advantages! Pity, as they really do light the way forward much beyond the reach of normal lights, and make driving on unfamiliar roads in the dark much easier.

It is odd as you see them disappearing behind you though!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Pedal it around town to recharge the batteries, then switch to battery power out on the open road.

Can't see it catching on somehow. Read more

...mine came off in my hand!

I discovered a few weeks ago that it was quite easy to fiddle with the plastic disc in the top of the gear lever while bored in traffic, and, as you'd expect, it has now snapped off it's fixings and come off in my hand.

Anyone know if the plastic thing is a part that can just be ordered and slotted in or if it's going to be the case that I have to order a whole new gear lever? I don't think Appleyard will accept this one as fair wear and tear so I'm expecting to have to pay for it myself! That said, do I have to let VW fit it because the car's still under warranty?

I can't superglue it back on as the bits that snapped off are making it hard to get a good fit, and I expect it would just come straight off again.

Help! :) I knew it was a bad idea to have a brand new car with so many bits to ruin! Read more

Surely some SuperGlue placed at strategic points would solve the problem providing there are some points of contact?

right. mk2 1043cc polo with 1b3 on it.
over 2 weeks, was getting a little harder to cold start.
then on one night of warm engine drive, it kepts stuttering as if it had run out of fuel, then recovering itself again.(has a new filter b4 that happened)
limped home.
looked in morning and it failed to fire. took cover off airbox and found fuel spurting up out of carb top.
conemmed carb. got another off a scrapper and that fixed car for 6 months.

Then, same again happened. Got another carb and again it runs.

but still got the faulty one. I have it in 2 halfs in my room. i put float in water to see if it takes on water, left it for a week, but seems ok.

what would cause fueul to spurt n bubble n gurgle? so i can repair it

is the needle valve screwed in properly and the 'ó' ring
sealing? theres no screw, held in place by float.

The needle is held by the float, but the equally important valve seat is screwed into the carb body, and sometime has a sealing o ring.

Well, It happemned three weeks ago, I misfuelled the Landie with a tenner's worth of petrol. Topped it up with Dieselt (a lot of it !) and all has been well, in fact it seems to run smoother ! Could happen to anyone ! Read more

In a pre high pressure injection diesel you can get away with up to 10% petrol in the mix, and it will tend to smooth out the mix by continuing to burn a little longer than the diesel does. How you managed it in the LandRover though... now the 535d I can understand.
