Am the owner of an 04 berlingo Hdi, the van mostly runs fine but has days when it totally lacks go- has been into Citroen under warranty, twice they plugged it into diagnostic comp to no avail, last time reloaded software into management system which seemed to work for a while, but is now back to it's usual gutless self; does not rev freely and struggles to reach over 60, am considering getting rid to save my sanity-any ideas?

(I thought I posted this yesterday but I obviously pressed the wrong button) have just put a deposit down on a 3 year old scenic 1.9 dci with a renault main dealer. On the test drive the gearbox clunked from first to second (not from 3rd to 2nd) does anyone know if this is common with the renault or should I be worrying. They give a warranty, but I don't really want to have to go down that route...

Nope, I moved it across to the Technical Matters part of the forum.

Hi lads,
i was looking some time for smbody to give as profesional advice as possible on my idea.i live in west of ireland in a town of 40k people, think to break my prcelain pig,get the money i might have and buy a powerfull diagnostic tool and printer(maybe bosh?).if any of u are in car repair industry what dou think of providing independent local garages with testing of electronics, diagnostics, code reading or just a print-out saying everithing is fine..bla bla.i see small locals face some sort of lack in this field and probably they wait for somebdy's help?any opinion welcome.thanks Read more
If you have no experience of working in a garage, I'd forget it, otherwise you'll not 'click' with the people you are working for. You won't know what they mean when they talk to you and they'll think you're an idiot who thinks he knows everything. They will think you are an idiot who just bought a fancy tool and thinks he knows more than them. It may not be fair, but that's generally how men at work think about outsiders coming in to interfere with their job.
Can someone tell how to find the correct fuel filter for my Citroen C5 2.2 HDI 2001, spoke to Citroen and all he could give was the fuel filter part no. 190677 which isn't very helpful if i want to buy it from say Halfords!!
It is either a Bosch or Siemens.
Thanks for your help. Read more
Halfords have their own part lists to tell you which one to get.
I have just bought a Rover 420 GSI petrol (1996) on a p plate.
Unfortunately there is no documentation to suggest the fuel filter has been changed. Is there any advice on changing it, does and don't etc.

10 years old - a filter can't be that expensive/ Why not change it anyway?
A colleague of mine has found out that he just bought a stolen caravan at the weekend.
It was an ebay sale, he paid around £6k cash, forgot to get a receipt. When he got it home, he rang his insurance co to get it covered and they told him it's stolen.
He's seeing the police tonight. We've suggested he get onto is home or car insurance co to see whether they can pursue a claim for him using his legal protection cover. Alternatively if that doesn't work we suggested he try the small claims court. He needs to find out what status the caravan is, ie whether it has been subject to a claim and who owns it (original owner, insurance co).
Can anyone advise on what his chances are or any other avenue's of action. The seller is possibly a trader and runs another company so has some history and isn't likely to disappear, however he may not be a man of means either (the usual, house in wifes name etc).
Thanks

This happened earlier this year and as far as I remember reading it in my local rag it was simply returned to the owner, no mention of further procedings or gossip in the local community.
The impression given was that because they claimed they had a bill of sale from an anonymous seller they met somewhere the plod could not prove they were stealing it ! ...... I thought at the time that it would make stealing cars a lot easier !.
For your info it was in Felton Northumberland where the caravan was taken.
There has been allot of deate on motoring and business forums about the real green attributes of the Prius and how it is probably costing Toyota to sell them.
Nissan (and presumably Renault later) are now paying Toyota under licence to use their hybrid technology.
Will the Prius turn out to be one of those long term decisions that Toyota are so good at (usually after they have been criticised for doing someting such as the Prius)

But is the overall environmental footprint of a diesel larger than a comparable petrol? It's seems to my unscientific mind that the VERY basics are:
Diesel - less CO2, less fuel comsumption, larger particulates.
Petrol - less CO, less NOX, smaller particulates.
But which is 'better' overall for the environment. And whichever is the best we should then properly maintain them but drive them into the ground, instead of needlessly renewing every 3 years just because the lease is up or because we fancy a change (easier said than done!).
I have just had a call from my daughter asking where the nearest filling staion is?
She is in West London and an area I know ( or knew) very well.
I had to think hard (as so many filling stations have closed ) to give her the simplest directions to a "local" one.
At least the call came in the middle of a weekday.
For future reference, are there any reliable databases available listing filling stations and opening hours?
She does not have SatNav but I could use the Web and relay the info?
I hate to think what the situation is in rural and remote areas. Read more
henry k - how about this one?

apparently, other prices covered apart from petrol.
i think it is in development phase, and so may not cover your area.
1996 2.0l Auto, no aircon. Urban varies between 22(aargh!) and about 27(poor but acceptable) mpg. On the motorway it can be about 37-40mpg. Not the usual suspects of brakes binding, leaking fuel or blocked air filter. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Apart from the other suggestions, low tyre pressures, poor wheel tracking, unnecessary weight in the boot etc all decrease mpg.
Hi folks
My '92 W124 coupe has started to suffer a rattle/groan from the engine area when idling and when the steering is turned. I'm guessing the PS pump is expiring.(will do some work with a stethoscope to make sure it's not the waterpump or alternator). The PS resevoir is up to the "full" mark, has never leaked or anything - although the fluid itself is rather murky (and not the pink/red colour you would expect to see).
Can anyone tell me what fluid the Benz takes ? Most other cars take auto-trans-fluid, but I'm not sure about the Merc. I'm going to bleed the old fluid out and try some new fluid before opting for a new pump.
Thanks
Frank

A favourite for creaking on the W201, W124 etc is the idler arm bushing. This is located on the passenger side firewall. A new bushing kit is around £15-20 IIRC, and easy to fit. Don't overtighten the bolt otherwise it will creak again after a few months.
There are other things too - tie rods and steering damper spring to mind. If steering damper is original then relaplace it anyway - well worth the money.
thanks
think I know where you mean-will give them a try
