Hi there, I was wondering if any of you knowledgable people could give me some advice please!

I have just bought a used Mitsubishi Colt (05 plate, 8500 miles, registered end of June 2005) as a second car/runaround. I bought it from a 'reputable' dealer with many dealerships nationwide, although not a Mitsubishi garage, and it was just over 13 months old when I picked it up at the end of July.

The garage assured me that it was serviced before I picked it up (although they have yet to give me documentation to prove this), and because it was a little after 13 months old I checked that this wouldn't affect the warranty - I was told it wouldn't, and that the car just has to be serviced within 4 months or 500 miles of the time it is due.

My questions are these:

Is that correct about the service timing and is there likely to be any problems with the warranty?

Is it OK that this dealer has serviced it and not a Mitsubishi dealer?

One of my friends has got me thinking, and now I am a little concerned. The car is just a runaround and not going to do very many miles, but I bought it on the basis that it had nearly 2 years manufacturers warranty remaining. If there is going to be any problems with the warranty, do I have any comeback with the dealer? All the documentation from the dealer that I have clearly states that it is covered by the 'balance of maufacturers warranty'.

Many thanks for your help!

I didn't realise that buying a small car could produce so much anxiety!

If the supplying dealer sold the car on the basis it had remaining warranty, then their actions have invalidated the warranty, id give them hell. Get it all in writing which they should do if they have nothing to worry about.

As far as the servicing proof goes, their should be an internally generated invoice detailing the work done on the car as the service department usually invoices the sales dept for the work done.
If you can get a copy of this, its as good as the one you would get if you paid for the work yourself.

Well, after lots od looking, I have finally got my heart set on an old style 5 series as my replacement car.

Absoloutely nothing else will do, and I've found the one that I want, it's a 2001 X Reg 525i SE Auto. Euipped with Leather, TV, Sat Nav etc.

The car has full BMW history and is reprtedly in very good condition.

Scren price is £6,900 nd I've been offered £5,800 for y Focus TDCi Sport.

I know it's a much bigger cost to hange than I originally wanted, but the car is so nice I'm afraid my heart is ruling my head.

Can anyone tell me whu I shouldn't buy this car?

And as a side note, does anyone want my Focus TDCi Sport for £6,500? It's a snp when you compare it to others on Autotrader!

Did 2,000 plus miles in the 523i once from the south
of Spain to the North West in around 48 hours including
two overnight stops and felt fully capable of turning round and
doing the journey in reverse.

If you turned round and did the journey in reverse you would carry on the same way you were going.(dont take offence, only a bit of fun).

I have a 95M zetec. The manual says that 10w30 oil is recommended. I read somewhere that 5w30 is better. Is this true? Read more

not so sure it wont do any long term damge personally.

If valves are sticking then its possible unburnt gases are going into exhaust and will be slowly killing cat!

However, neither 5/30 nor 10/30 should cause a problem, but i refer to my earlier post as to which one to use

Any Xc90 owners on the forum. Can you give me some of the pros and cons of owning this car. I have been looking for one for weeks now, there is a lot of rubbish out there for big money. Allmost all of the best cars are at main dealers who are charging top book for each car. Yuor thoughts would be most wellcome. Read more

I've had one for a couple of years now, bought from new.

No complaints whatsoever over 36k miles; very spacious, comfortable and adaptable cars, ideal for us as we have three kids and often need to carry more than five. The build quality has been generally very good; one or two bits of plastic floor trim near the seats have come adrift having been kicked off by kids, but replaced easily.

We've been through a set of tyres, changed at the 20k mark, which is something I'll be keeping an eye on. Fuel consumtion isn't too bad for a heavy car, averaging about 35mpg on a steady motorway run at 60-70 mph. We go to France fairly regularly, and think nothing of a 12 hr journey in one hit. Being able to separate the children is a bonus, and there's still plenty of luggage space, especially with a top box. Very nice to drive, as well.

Really can't think of any cons; we're very happy with it.

It seems that our firms that convert vehicles for wheelchair use could soon be put out of business by new EU rules.

First posting here. I have a G reg Fiesta on which the brakes have just failed . It is repairable but it is not economic to have a garage do it and no one here is mechanically minded.

It does have an MOT but at the moment it is definitely not roadworthy . Is it legal for me to sell it in this condition? Read more

Thanks everyone. I have now offered it on the local Freecycle group. Got a couple of interested parties already.

Morning all,

Just wondering if anyone here can help me with a problem with child car seats. Little one is fast out growing her 0 car seat and so in preparation, we'd like to get her a new one that will last a few years. After settling on a good brand 123 seat (which should see her through to about the age of 10) I went to a local shop to try it in my car, and the girl who fitted it was unable to get the seat belt round fully.

When we were choosing the first car seat, we had so many problems with the same thing, and have ended up putting her in the front next to me (no airbag fitted so that's ok!) I was hopefull though that the bigger seats would require less seat belt, and so I would not suffer the same problem! How wrong I was!!!!

My question is - is it possible to get longer seatbelts fitted? I fail to see that a VW Polo Saloon has excessively short seatbelts, as I wold have thought that it was meant as a family car - but may be I'm just being wishful!

If it is possible to get seatbelts, is it something that someone can do at home or do they have to be fitted professionaly?

Hi,
My mother owns a 1994(L) Rover 214 which has developed a frequent problem after re-starting with a warm engine. She tells me that after it has been parked when hot and it is re-started, the car will drive for a short distance - less than 1/2 mile before the engine splutters and stops. If she waits for a short while, 5-10 minutes, she is able to start it again and continue the journey with no more problems.

The symptoms appear very similar to those I once suffered in an old 1.8L Ford Sierra which was diagnosed by the AA as a vapour lock and I fixed it by replacing the mechanical camshaft-driven fuel pump. On the Rover 214, the petrol pump is however in the fuel tank and is electric powered.

Does this problem seem like vapour-lock and if so, is there a common issue with this Model or Engine?

Would a replacement pump be the solution or is the problem likely to be under the hood (Fuel Injection etc..)?

Thanks in advance

The fuel pumps on these dont normally cause any problems,I would first check the small pipe from inlet manifold to ecu-Its a vacuum pipe, these can either get clogged up or split, if either occurs, it prevents timing advance/retard working correctly and may cause the stalling.

If that is ok,then check HT side of ignition as that can cause problems ie coil dizzy cap rotor arm.another poss is the crank position sensor.A regular failure on these

I have a 2002 Passat , I have had the ABS and ESP lights coming up , and Engine Workshop also . when looked at on the computer the faults are shown as "implausible" . I noticed that the brake lights don't work ? One of the bulbs was out , on replacing it they still don't work , I heard these alarms and brake light faults are related???

many thanks , I had figured out it was probably the brake switch , but had difficulty finding a decent circuit diagram , the one in the Haynes manual seems a bit too simple

I'm confused.. I thought that the VW Golf was a worldwide brand however the current MK5 version has finally gone on sale in the U.S. and it's called.. wait for it,

Rabbit!! www.vw.com/rabbit/index.html

As Clarkson would say.. ohhh dear....

What on earth are V.W. thinking? Surely the *Golf* name carries much more kudos than Rabbit.

If V.W. tried to market the name here it would be laughed all the way back to Wolfsburg.

So what's going on? Why the silly name? Read more

Most VWs had different names in the US in the 70s/80s if I recall it was something like this

Polo = Fox
Golf = Rabbit
Passat = Quantum
Audi 100 = 4000
Audi 200 = 5000

There used to be a fair amount of "playing bunny" merchandise but has probably all disappeared by now.

Best item though was a book called
"Poor Richards Rabbit Book"
The best ever workshop manual for the Mark I golf - hilarious text and illustrations but 100% spot on factually.
