I have a 2002 Passat , I have had the ABS and ESP lights coming up , and Engine Workshop also . when looked at on the computer the faults are shown as "implausible" . I noticed that the brake lights don't work ? One of the bulbs was out , on replacing it they still don't work , I heard these alarms and brake light faults are related???

I'm confused.. I thought that the VW Golf was a worldwide brand however the current MK5 version has finally gone on sale in the U.S. and it's called.. wait for it,
Rabbit!! www.vw.com/rabbit/index.html
As Clarkson would say.. ohhh dear....
What on earth are V.W. thinking? Surely the *Golf* name carries much more kudos than Rabbit.
If V.W. tried to market the name here it would be laughed all the way back to Wolfsburg.
So what's going on? Why the silly name? Read more
Most VWs had different names in the US in the 70s/80s if I recall it was something like this
Polo = Fox
Golf = Rabbit
Passat = Quantum
Audi 100 = 4000
Audi 200 = 5000
There used to be a fair amount of "playing bunny" merchandise but has probably all disappeared by now.
Best item though was a book called
"Poor Richards Rabbit Book"
The best ever workshop manual for the Mark I golf - hilarious text and illustrations but 100% spot on factually.
Hi Guys,
My niece has just had a drive shaft on the o/s of her 'w' reg Citroen Saxo break off. I was surprised to see it was tubular rather than solid and it had ended up like a corkscrew. Also the joint attached to the gearbox had been nearly yanked out causing oil spillage. The car has never been involved in an accident so I'm at a loss as to the cause. A local breakdown firm who stopped to assist as I arrived knew exactly the problem before lifting the bonnet and said it was a common fault.
Anyone else out there heard of this and know the cause?
Your divine guidance is, as always greatly appreciated

There are two obvious possibilities which spring to mind, as you describe a predominantly plastic failure mode;
1) The yield stress of the steel was not up to the requirement - i.e., the shaft was made out either the wrong steel, or a bad batch of the right steel.
2) The shaft section is inadequate - i.e., a design problem.
It makes a lot of sense to make shafts which transmit torsion from tubular sections rather than from solid - the material near the centre of a solid shaft contributs almost nothing to the torsional stiffness of a shaft (the torsional stiffness goes as radius to the power of four. The rotational speed at which shafts whirl is also increased by using a tubular shaft rather than a solid one.

Has anyone recently joined the RAC and succesfully claimed the £30 Fuel Offer ??
I have had some problems which I am concerned about. Read more
I recently had the misfortune to use my RAC service "insurance" and a very, very long wait for attendance (only two minutes from Glasgow City Centre) means that a 30 quid bribe to join I assure you is not worth it.
Bought the 1996 1.8i Accord this afternoon.
No big deal but the remote locking fob didnt work. Where the purple bulb is the two prongs that are attached to the little circuit board have broken off.
I soldered them back on and now I think I need to re-programme the fob.
Does anyone know how I do this?
Thanks for any help. Read more
Thanks for the help and the links. The second link looks good. Cheers DD for finding it.

I think it was one of the Radio 1 DJ's that had a slot that included the silly things you did in the car.
For example, there was one chap that wouldn't allow himself to breathe when he drove through the Blackwall Tunnel & got quite ratty if he was foiled.
I know i've got some..anyone else? Read more
just remembered I like trying to get from the top level of a multi-storey car park to the bottom in neutral (engine running), or in 1st, no brakes
Hello
I've just changed the brake shoes on my Megane and have noticed that the handbrake lever is coming up a long way before the brakes engage. Do I have to wait for the auto adjusters to kick in before I adjust the hand brake? If I have to adjust the handbrake how do I do it?
Thanks

you should get the adjusters tight before you touch the handbrake.
Absolutely right, but the number of people I've seen that do it the other way round beyond belief......
Ive been given a 94 M reg Passat 1.9 CL TDi which has a frustrating engine problem I'm hoping someone can help solve. When the car is started & driven it pulls away slowly, getting to 40 takes at least 30 seconds but when I slam it into 1st then straight back out it pulls like it should, that is until i hit an incline steeper than a speed hump & then the speed starts to drop & dropping gear doesnt make a blind bit of difference, when I get to level ground it starts to pull away again normally. What is causing this to happen?? Any help or ideas gratefully received. TIA Read more

Last time I went up to see the in-laws I read the following sentence in the Gazette(or pretty close to it, I don't have it to hand). "Who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976? Answers on a postcard to 'Brotherhood of Man Competition, Northumberland Gazette...."
I thought I was reading Viz for a minute.
Zippity Dudah made me chuckle. Well worth a motoring-related look!
many thanks , I had figured out it was probably the brake switch , but had difficulty finding a decent circuit diagram , the one in the Haynes manual seems a bit too simple
