what's the best engine oil for an escort - V1ctor
I have a 95M zetec. The manual says that 10w30 oil is recommended. I read somewhere that 5w30 is better. Is this true?

If you are choosing oil for just use in the summer the 10/30 is ok. But for all round year use I think 5/30 would be better. But does depend on mileage of car too and type of use. If its high/very high mileage or mostly motorway work I would stick to 10/30.

Others will disagree ! they always do

Which oil(s) have you been using over the years (brand and viscosity) ?

Either oil will be absolutely fine - don't worry about it.

Most large garages and dealers have one big bulk oil drum, and everything that comes through the workshop gets that oil in it. If engines were so sensitive to oil, these technical pages would be full of people with serious engine trouble - generally they are full of people with annoying electrical/electronic niggles.

If you put oil that's too think in these, the valves can stick a bit when they are cold, but it isn't a big deal. Both of the oils you mention won't have this trouble - they are thin enough.

Don't worry - either oil is OK.

It isn't a big deal? It depends on how you look at it - It won't do any long term damage, but you try living with a zetec engined car that the valves stick on, whenever the engine is cold. Its a nightmare, been there done that!

not so sure it wont do any long term damge personally.

If valves are sticking then its possible unburnt gases are going into exhaust and will be slowly killing cat!

However, neither 5/30 nor 10/30 should cause a problem, but i refer to my earlier post as to which one to use
