I've been quoted £390 for a year's Gold Star cover on my 2001 BMW 530i. The cover seems quite comprehensive. I'd like to know of anyone's experiences of Warranty Direct when it came to actually making a claim. Did they refuse it, drag their feet or whatever? Some people reckon these warranties (not necessarily Warranty Direct) are not worth the paper they're written on. Read more
Having been a moderator for nearly two years now I have had to take the difficult decision to hand back my extra buttons and concentrate on other projects.
My business now demands more than it ever has done and my property renovations seem to do the same. However these factors do not make this decision any easier. To be perfectly honest I was finding it nearly impossible during recent times to dedicate the time that the role needed.
I don't want to turn this into a long speech butI would like to thank HJ, Dave and Smokie for their support and cooperation during the latter part of my moderating period. In addition I would also like to thank Mark who not only promoted my services to HJ, Dave and Alan and thus gave me the opportunity to contribute to the moderating effort, but was also an excellent mentor in those early times. Last but not least I would like to thank Alan (No Do$h) for his support.
But really the thanks goes to you all for your amusing and informative contributions that I have enjoyed reading over the last couple of years, even if I did have to edit some of them ;)
I would also like to ask you all to continue to support HJ, Dave and Smokie in their efforts to maintain the excellent standards of this site.
All the best

Can't beleive it's two years, about time for me to move on as well, never lurked on a forum for so long.
Good luck.
My brother who lives in Winchester is looking for a good VW independent for a diesel cambelt change on a Golf. I have searched the 'Good Garage Guide' but there does not appear to be anything close enough. Has anyone any recommendations?

I am a total newbie to this site, so please be nice !
Also I know nothing about cars or vans, apart from driving them.
I have just bought a used Partner Van its a V reg (old shape).
I need to get a spare key, the central locking/alarm type, Peugeot have quoted £138 plus £45 to programme it, this cost is a bit steep.
Can I get one somewhere else ?
The N/S door seal has come away from the top door recess, it appears to be ok, can I glue it back ? If so what adhesive ?
Does anyone know where I can get the van boarded out in the Gravesend / Medway area ? Read more
Peugeot Partner = Citroen Berlingo - may be worth getting the key no from Peugeot and seeing if a Citroen dealer is any cheaper.
Also some of the independent locksmiths can provide and code replacement keys.
Driving past my local Stephen James BMW Mini dealership the other day, I saw, outside on the forecourt a new (presumably) Mini convertible in white/cream with a price tag of some £27k+, in the windscreen.
Doing only a modicum of research, I could not find what type of Mini this could be to cost that amount of money - does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? Would anyone in their right mind pay that amount for that sort of car, I wonder - Yes is the probable reply, I suppose. Read more
I think 17k on a mini is moronic
Especially with that ghastly, plastic interior?
Further to HJ's message, for those members who haven't read the "Posting Website Adresses" post in the Announcements forum - then please do so.

There is information there on how to make the link shorter and more managable.

First post....I hope this is the right forum.
I'm looking to change my dear old Lexus GS300 for something more suited to my pension!
I like the idea of a biggish diesel engine in a smallish hatchback. However I've got used to an auto box and don't fancy a manual. I recently hired a Focus Estate with an auto box, and I was impressed with the combined auto/clutchless manual box. Can anyone here tell me if this kind of transmission is available on any of the cars that might fit my pocket? (Peugot 206 2.0 HDi, Punto Grande 1.9 Multijet etc. etc.)

Hey Bob,
Other backroomers have mentioned the Seat / 2.0 TDI / DSG options, so how about an Altea TDI DSG for bang on your budget:

1 yr old cars with less than 10,000 miles on the clock, or thereabouts. Bags of style too. I bought one last week and so far am very satisfied.
Hope this doesn't put you in two minds for too long.
Not a major issue however I have noticed recently that when I switch the Mondeo off and both cooling fans are running, i.e when the climate is on, the fans run on for a few secs before the ECU turns them off (which is normal) however one fan clicks as it spools down. I have checked for leaves and twigs etc though there is nothing fouling the blades.
There is no sign of clicking when it is running, no additional vibration through the cowling and the motor in question does not get any warmer than the other one, could it perhaps be a sign that the motor is getting worn, perhaps the brushes are getting to the end of their life?
Thanks. Read more
Electric motors load the bearings in one direction (ie in an end thrust) when magnetic forces are at work but not when power is dropped. (its a natural magnetic thing) SO push the fan in and turn it by hand to feel for anything "clicky" then pull the fan out and do the same thing. There will be a fair degree of end float, in fact too much end float may be the problem.

I did a lot of miles last weekend and bought the cheapest Shell diesel I saw at 97.9p/l. Last night, filled up in Watford at 94.9p - u/l was 92.9p/l. I assume it had just gone down as it was 1p cheaper than actually posted.
Is this a Watford price war or a national trend? - either way, very welcome. If you're about to fill up today it might be worth a quick check on www.petrolprices.com Read more
94.9 and 96.9 here. We do a fortnightly shop at the local Sainsbury's which always qualifies for the 5p off offer, but I use a tankful every 9 days or so, so I have to pay standard prices every other fill.
91.9 paid on Friday with discount vs 98.9 "standard" price paid just over a week earlier (before the recent cuts). Worked out at just under a £4 saving filling up the Mondeo. Which is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick as they say.
80-something would be nice, but it was only 2003 when we were paying high 70's!
Cheers

Hi
I have a June 2006 Mazda6 2.0 5 door which has now done 3000 miles and i have had to top up my oil with .5l already also i cant get more than 26 mpg according to my trip computer is this right ,also at low speeds its sounds a bit throaty as though the exhaust is blowing a bit ith has done this since i bought it but it seems to me a bit haevy on the juice, has anyone else got the same problem or is mine a rogue? Read more
I have had two premacy's one 1.8 and my current one 2litre, never put any oil in it and I check weekly, i dont consider .5 of a litre too much in 3000miles though. There have been threads on here about VAG using a lot more oil than you are using. Trip computers, especially in my Punto are not accurate. I know it may seem daft to have a Mazda and Fiat, but I use the Punto for work and in two Punto,s and 56000miles very little has gone wrong. Cheapest car over 1200cc gets me best mileage allowance, that was my reason for getting them, and I am not disapointed.

They also do a Platinum cover for cars less than 3 years, but they should be covered by manufacturers warranty anyway (unless they were imports or summat).
