Hi

I was wondering what the figures were for in terms of UK road deaths and global road deaths per year.

I once heard that more people had died in road traffic accidents over the years since cars were invented, than in every world war. Are there any statistics to prove or disprove this?

Thanks in advance.

"I seem to remember that as a condition to EU entry, all roads have ten years to meet a certain standard. "

Shame it's not a condition to stay in the EU, otherwise either our roads would have to be improved or we would get kicked out... :-)

Does anyone know if it's possible to retro fit the auto hold function on a manual Passat estate? It's listed as a £35 option so it can't be that involved! There's a button near the gearstick but just wondering whether it's one of those things that could be done or else something that would need to be added when the car's built. Read more

The one I took out on a test drive had it on and it saved reaching for the button on the dash whenever there was a slight incline. Didn't actually try it on more demanding inclines but can see what you're saying and how it could take some 'force' to get it to release!! Picking up an estate tomorrow (manual, without auto hold as far as I know) so will reserve judgement on whether it's a gimmick or not when I've got used to not having a standard handbrake lever!! Knowing VW, though, what's a £35 option at build on a new vehicle will end up something silly like £200 at a dealers as a retro job!!

I have a 2004 Nissan Tino 2.2 DCI which is covered by a Nissan warranty. It has done 25K miles and until now has been trouble free.I start the car after a week of non use and after driving 2 miles it loses power with a max speed of 35mph. This happens intermittantly for two days then I get a EMU warning saying there is a problem. I take the car to the local dealer who has serviced it twice and he says the airfilter was dirty , despite it having been changed on the services. It is replaced and the car is fine covering a 100 mile high speed round trip, much to my surprise. Then the fault reoccurs a day or so later . Back to the dealer who then tells me, that from the diagnostics it is a fuel pump problem and warns me that it may befuel contamination and if so, it is not covered by the warranty. Somewhat shocked I ask at what cost . The reply was "not too bad, only about £800" I ask him if he is living in the real world!! He tell me that the pump has to sent to a specialist who will determine if it is fuel contamination or a manufacturing fault and on that result will determine whether it is covered by warranty or not. Is this the likely cause of the problem and is the dealer correct as I had assumed that the pump would have just been replaced as a matter of course.
I would be interested in views, as I am sceptical as to his diagnosis

I think the dealer suspects 'misfuelling' - i.e. accidentally putting some petrol in. Unfortunately it can severly damage the Diesel injection system (pump and injectors etc).

Hi

I'm having difficulty removing the NSF driveshaft from the gearbox on the Escort.

I've taken apart the suspension so all that's holding the hub in place is the driveshaft and strut. However the driveshaft does not want to budge. Quite difficult to get a lever in between anyway because of the crossmember and ABS modulator securing bracket in the way. Have tried hitting a crowbar at it whilst someone pulls on the wheel, but still no luck. I'm running out of ideas.

Hope someone can help!

But, if you just fit a known good gearbox, you won't
have to put yourself through this trouble!

Too late :-$ ! I decided that not knowing the mileage of the new 'box I wasn't going to chance having the bearings let go on that, so I bought a rebuild kit from eBay. As you can see, it's taken me a month to get this far, hence why I didn't want a 'live' project on my own gearbox!

Thanks for all the help and advice so far. The story as it stands is:

  • 'New' gearbox bought and stripped

  • 'Box looks like it's been rebuilt before (!). 5th gear off OK but I think I'll loctite it back on

  • Diff bearings seemed to come off OK with bearing puller and ring gear removed

  • Outer race of mainshaft came out fine after I fabricated my own tool (I'll put a piccy somewhere when I've finished) and the oil slinger was removed (read destroyed)

  • Parts cleaned and checked ready to be put back.

  • One question before I proceed. What should I use on the gears and the synchros? Should I follow Haynes guide and buy the moly paste from Ford or will dad's decades old moly grease suffice? Same question goes for the detent cap seal (loctite?) and 5th gear on input shaft (lithium grease?).

    Thanks again.

I have a Sony 6 Cd Changer model number CDX-T69 and would like to replace the Sony head unit with a MP3 one.
Do I have to buy a Sony head unit or will the changer work with other brands of head units?
    Thanks Read more

    BB

You would need a Sony head unit. Be careful to check that a later Sony Head unit has the same connection as your current one as they do change.

IMO just buy the best sounding head unit you can afford and forget the changer. An MP3 disc will hold two of your CD changers worth of music.

    A MP3 changer though.............

Is my heater matrix on the way out??? Again?

The moment I move the heater temperature control away from the cold setting there is that unmistakable sickly sweet smell of wet dog - i.e. hot coolant - in the cabin. Somewhere there must be a leak. There is no smell under the bonnet. Oddly the coolant level hardly goes down in the radiator expansion tank. Perhaps a cup every month.

I have just now put in a container of Forte Radiator Stop Leak (as recommended on here) and I will have to see if this helps.

The car is a 1995 Xantia petrol auto with 130,000 miles and otherwise a fine car. I will check the records but I think the matrix has already been replaced some years ago. Surely it should not go twice?

Where do I go from here if the Stop leak does not work? Is there anything I can do that does not require dismantling the dash? If it fails should I repair it? Read more

    RichardW

The Xantia matrix is a pile of rubbish. Yes it's entirely possible it's failed again - in fact I would say that's most likely. There's nothing you can do to tighten clips etc - it's all well hidden in the dash. £30 for a new matrix, and 10 hours or so to change it. Or, as you have done, add the Forte sealer and forget about it. My first Xantia TD had a smelly matrix (oddly it smelt a bit of curry!) for about 30k before the water started dripping out of the dash. The current car went from no sign to wet dash in a couple of k miles. Both have been sealed by Forte. Only side effect seems to be a light holding open of the thermostat, causing it to run at 70 rather than 80. I do NOT intend to rip the dash out unless I REALLY have to though....!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Prompted by the thread "How much oil does your high miler use".

My trusty '96 1.5 lsi auto is about to hit the 100k miles mark. I have driven 83k of them during my ownership since 2002, all on the motorway. During this time I have looked after it with oil changes at least every 6k, usually 5k. Cambelt at 75k, recent exhaust and battery.

The only faults/niggles I am aware of are:
    - pads/disks on the way out
    - rear trailing arm bushes perishing
    - new rad probably needed soon
    - drivers electric window gets stuck half way down
    - couple of minor rust patches

I have no reason to change the car - I like the way it performs, averages 42mpg, uses no oil, auto box shifts smoothly. Other than fixing the above faults, what should I plan to need to replace in the next 50k miles? What preventative maintenance would you recommend? I guess I really should do the atf. Is the sticking window an MOT issue? Anyone else run one of these up to really high mileage? What faults did you encounter?

    Thanks in advance
