For several years, my motor insurer has sent me a statement of the NCB I am entitled to, along with the renewal notice. Not this year. When questioned, they said they would send it when they received my renewal premium, or would make it known to a new insurer if I wanted to change. They would not say why.
Is this legal? It looks to me like a way of ensuring repeat business. Read more
My passat has just failed it's MOT on amongst other things rear axle bushes, I have been told that this is a real pig of a job, and the garage said they would be reluctant to take the job on for less than £300 as it takes so long. Would this be a job for a diy mechanic with alot of spare time. I am reluctant to scrap it as its fuel economy is fantastic, the other option is to keep it for spares and buy another one.
so has anyone done this job if so how hard is it. All the other jobs are very simple and not a problem.
thanks

We did some on an Audi 80 a while back, sod of a job rusted fixings and making up drifts and tubes to press out and in. £300 sounds just reward for the job. After all, £300 doesnt buy much in the replacement car market!

hi
I have a xantia 1999 exclusive only 15000mls
The rear suspension goes solid as if the spheres are gone but after driving for a while it returns to normal
A garage in France told me it could be the electro valve
Can anyone help please

"I heared a click after 40 seconds like a solenoid then the suspension was solid is this normal??"
The first part is - the car switches to soft mode when you open a door (you can hear the solenoids humming if you listen) - then after about 30s of the doors being closed it switches the solenoids off back to hard mode. If it goes solid in hard mode then the corner spheres on the rear are shot and need replacing. This is not surprising as they are really time limited not mileage - cheap to get replaced at an indpendent, or DIY. If you replace the spheres, then it should be less noticeable when it switches into hard mode when driving, but if you are still experiencing long periods of hard mode, then you probably need some new diodes. Not all questions are legitimate in the Back Room. That one didn't fit here at all, anywhere.
This one is locked too, just for good measure :-)

I have just created on the works computer a new 4x4 tyre size from Pirelli. It is a 325/35r28 120v Scorpion Zero Assimetrico. There is no typing error on the rim size. I am told that Pirelli are making the first batch of about 100 tyres in the next couple of weeks. Knowing what a savvy brigade roomers are I know there is "bound" to be a big demand and I am making sure that roomers are first in the queue. No pushing or shoving please ! and although I will not show any favouritism I will in fact let Adam{p} be first as I particularly like his posts.I note that today that Aprilia has made a post concerning certain off road capabilties of the X5, roomers can rest assured that the tread pattern of this tyre has very similar off road capabilities. I know that price is irrelevant to such an affluent association as "the room" but just in case the Platinum card is a little full roomers should be aware that the price is a mere £815.99 each, ie a set of 4 is only £3263.96. OK if you push me for a deal I will knock off the .96p. This is the most expensive normal road tyre I have ever heard of. MODS sorry for the advert but I am sure that you will understand how "vital" this info is for all on this site. Read more

That's 325mm wide (I feel so inferior with my 195s), 35% profile height (regular low profiles are around 55%?) and to fit on a 28 inch diameter wheel.
So from the side it'll look like a rubber band stretched over a barrel, and from behind it'll look like both rear wheels have been replaced by a single tube of Rolos stretching across the car.
I'm sure that in 20 years time, there'll be Kwick Fit adverts in the paper for budget versions, like there is now for 165x13 Fiesta tyres...
Dear me,
How difficult can it be to fill an engine with oil to the correct level?
My Leon was in for its 2nd year service today, on picking it up checked the oil - yes again it was 1cm over the max level on the dipstick. This is now the third time in a row from (different) SEAT dealers.
Strangely I never manage to overfill the oil when doing interim changes, so perhaps there is a "technique" I am missing and known only to car mechanics ?
Anyway straight home to siphon out the excess with the Pela Extractor - purchased for this very reason (and the interim changes). Hopefully no damage done.

I'll give the Pela 7 1/2 out of 10. Works fine on the Leon, however only gets 2/3rds of the oil out of my Vectra as it seems to hit a restriction towards the bottom of the dipstick which prevents it entering the bottom of the sump. Therefore cannot be fully recommended.
As it happens the Vectra has enough clearance underneath without resorting to axle stands, to change the oil the old fashioned way.

I was driving on the M60 today (going to Trafford Centre) a silver VW polo overtook me on the outside lane ... suddenly the driver was swerving all over the outside lane, really erraticly .. it was a woman.
Her head was being thrown around whilst she was jerking the wheel ...
Thanksfully she regained control of the car, I really don't know what happened, but was glad that seh was safe and not involved in an RTA

Nah. Mobile fell off her shoulder. That said there is a girl at work (in Stockport) who drives a silver polo, and loves shopping. Trouble is she hates motorways to the extent that it is almost a phobia, but there is only one way to the shopping Nirvana of the Trafford Cenre from Stockport. It could have been her...
Wife has decided now is the time to replace her Yaris. Question for the canny: is the alleged retail slowing in November/December a more significant factor in scatching the most from a deal, than deferring purchase to January when the new car will have a 2006 birthday? Car will be a new Jazz BTW. Views welcome. Read more
Good point about delivery: hadn't really thought of that! Can get a discount: it's whether the local dealers are willing to match it. Prefer to buy from local dealer, but may have to take it from the most competitive.

My guess is that they may want to save on admin costs, so they've effected a change in company policy.
If you do change to a new insurer explain this to them, and if they're not happy with it then pursue it with the old insurer. Until then I wouldn't worry unduly.
.....unless someone who is more informed than me can help.
