Sigh, thats the tagline from the latest horrendous Ford advert

They are called Fog lamps for a reason, nothing to do with being "sporty"...... Read more

Just think of them as idiot warning lights. It's very rare
that idiots on the roads make themselves known until it's too
late, so just be grateful that these people have had the
foresight to warn the general public that they're stupid. The same
goes for those blue washer-jet lights.

Here here. but isn't it great when a bulb fails! just a shame when both fail as we lose the tell tale sign.

But when they are up your pink fluffy dice reflecting light all over me making me look like some xmas decoration, well they get what they want, I pull over when possible or stay in the left lane of a dual carriageway doing 50 to 60 (they always overtake) and let them get on with it.

Question Vectra Cambelt
hedley

At 55,000 miles I am thinking new cambelt. Local Vauxhall agent is quoting £400. All my mileage is local, no motorways. Any thoughts?

hi, i was quite shocked to see our quote for your vectra cambelt, now i work at a vxl main dealer, and for a cambelt kit fitted, ie belt, rollers and tensioner inc labour and vat, should be £198 inc.(unless youve got the v6, then its £360) obviusly differen area codes have diffeent labour rates, but ours is £65 plus vat, so not the lowest. even if the water pump needed changing when they had the belt etc off, i would only expect an increase of £100 ish, so you'd be looking at the £300 mark, so i would recommend as you say, getting some other quotes, also, as someone else has rightly said, stick to 4yr 40k irespective. thanks

Hi there. One of my (niaeve) friends bought a £5 "performance chip" from ebay, as i thought there is a small catch, all it is, is a small resistor! and it is fitted between the two connections on the IAT sensor. There is a clear increase in performance. I was wondering how these little things work and how it harms the engine, thats if it does???? any brainboxes out there know?? Read more

hi just had a new cam belt and water pump fitted and now it is using exsessive amount of fuel can any one help? Read more

If you can smell fuel under the bonnet, the rubber injector leakoff pipes have been damaged during the work. These go hard and brittle with age and leak when any work is done near them. Replacement is quick and cheap.

Another possibility is that the injection pump or valve timing have been incorrectly set whilst changing the belt. Unless the job is carefully done with the correct locking pins, it's easy to get the timing adrift. Injection timing is critical on the XUD - who did the work?

Greetings,

I'm new to this forum so feel free to put me right.

I have a 1998 4 door citroen Xsara with a door problem. The rear drivers side door fails to open either from the inside or using the handle from the outside. I've taken the panel off inside and tried in vain to get it open. Any ideas how I can get the door open?

Thanks in advance.

My astra 1.6 its a M plate has just started to make a blow sort of sound from the front of engine, it has also lost a lot of power, it takes a while to rev the car as it seems to struggle slight miss firing ect.
Been told it could be a possible cat converter being blocked, is this a possibility??
or something else??
Thanks Read more

Adam {P}

Gary,

As everyone says, it could well be another problem but I can tell you that my Fiesta exhibited the exact same symptoms and it was indeed the cat.

No-one believed my loss of power claims until the cat got so hot, the car caught fire.

Only when it was parked in the drive with a scorched engine bay did they start to come around!

Good luck finding the fault and fixing it.

I am hoping some of you kind people can advise me on this rather irksome (but not serious) fault.

The headling material seems to have come 'unstuck' and is billowing down into the passenger space.

Apart from cutting it all away (Ha) any advice on remedial?

Thanks

Question Punto heater
Chris M

When you use the heater on my wife's Mk1 Punto (no A/C) we get a light film deposited on the inside of the windows. I am wondering whether the heater matrix has a small leak. There is no noticable loss of coolant. Years ago I had one leak and that emitted a cloud of 'steam' when it was used - this hasn't reached those proportions - yet!

Question is, can anyone think of another cause? Getting at the matrix to check it is a major facia out job, so one to be avoided if possible. I was thinking of trying some Rad Weld or similar first - any recommendations?

Reading the Haynes manual I can believe it would take 6 hours - probably quicker the second time though!

I have a friend who recently passed her driving test (auto transmission). I know there are certain cars that are not considered 'auto' for driving licence purposes. I wonder whether she could drive a 1997 Micra with CVT, with her driving licence. Thanks in advance. Read more

Ken,
Not sure if any of the comments (particually those of DVD)
in the follwoing thread are of any use?
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=19678

Helpful to me! i was wondering how the DLVA distinguish between auto and manual and the answer appears to be:

does the car have a clutch pedal

tick - manual
cross - automatic

unless i've read that thread completely wrong of course
