Vectra Cambelt - hedley
At 55,000 miles I am thinking new cambelt. Local Vauxhall agent is quoting £400. All my mileage is local, no motorways. Any thoughts?

My thoughts would be 40,000 or 4 years, whichever comes first, whatever the service schedule says. This is what I practised before moving to a chain cam engine.

£400 is surely too expensive however - what engine and how old is the car? An independent would do it cheaper.

I'd have been having those thoughts 15,000 miles ago! Motorways don't wear cars out, short local trips do. As for the price, I paid around £200 for belt, tensioner and water pump at local trusted indy.

I'm having my Omega V6 done next weekend at an indy - he's quoted just over £200 - and I understood the V6 was more awkward. I'm another 40k'er - the handbook says 80k IIRC but Vx subsequently changed their recommendation

As others have said, change at 40k or 4yrs, which ever is soonest. I suspect if the bill is £400, that will be for a cam belt kit which will include the ever so important belt tensioner as well. The tensioner is more prone to failure than the belt itself.

If you're in any doubt, then the following link shows the state of a 3.0 litre Omega cambelt at 60k.

Only 5k more than yours has done.

I had a vauxhall tigra 1.4 16valve my vauxhall agent billed me 210 pounds for a cam belt kit fitted i.e belt, tentioners, ect
all in!, so wheres the 400 quid coming from?? gwt another quote.

The change of cambelt AND tensioners, pulleys, etc is vital at 40,000 or 4 years, regardless of handbook recommendation.

I don't understand why Vauxhall continued publishing longer intervals AFTER they recommended all model intervals be dropped to 40k.

I had a belt failure in '98, at 50,000 miles on my Cavalier Mk3 which had the same X20XEV Ecotech 2 litre fitted to many Vectras. The failure was caused by one of the pulleys, not the belt itself. The initial Vauxhall dealer repair quote was £2500 but in the end I got a reconditioned head from an independent but even that was £1000 (Vauxhall did make a substantial "goodwill" gesture).

Thanks for your thoughts, I think I'll certainly seek an alternative quote!

hi, i was quite shocked to see our quote for your vectra cambelt, now i work at a vxl main dealer, and for a cambelt kit fitted, ie belt, rollers and tensioner inc labour and vat, should be £198 inc.(unless youve got the v6, then its £360) obviusly differen area codes have diffeent labour rates, but ours is £65 plus vat, so not the lowest. even if the water pump needed changing when they had the belt etc off, i would only expect an increase of £100 ish, so you'd be looking at the £300 mark, so i would recommend as you say, getting some other quotes, also, as someone else has rightly said, stick to 4yr 40k irespective. thanks
