November 2005
I have recently got a 2004 Vectra estate in metallic blue. I have noticed that the paintwork seems to have a number of very deep looking swirl marks in it when the sun falls in cerain directions. I did not notice these when I bought/picked up the car as it was a bit overcast. The marks look like somebody has either polished it bady or washed the car with something abrasive. It was bought from a local vauxhall dealer and is covered by the Network Q warranty.
I have had them 'mop' the car which has helped a little, but the marks are still there. When the sun is not on the car, it looks absolutley fine.
Is there anything that I could do to remove these marks?
Any help would be appreciated! Read more
Hi, I have a 1.8LX 1999 v reg 406 petrol engine. I was fitting a new radio last weekend, with the radio turned on - As I slid the radio in, the power went off. I have lost my switched 12v to my radio, dashboard rev counter, petrol gauge and oil gauge and LCD displays - also the car wont start! I cannot find any blown fuses and am having to short out the live 12v to the switched live 12v on my radio wiring to make everything work. The car now starts but I have to plug and unplug the short everytime I start and stop the car. The Haynes wiring diagram seems to suggest the built in systems inteface but I dont know where it is. Please help.
Thanks

I found the BSI unit below the fusebox and I did find a blown fuse that wasn't shown in the haynes manual. Thank you very much.
I have just had a compression test done on my Rover 100 ascot and was told that the head gasket had gone and that there was water leaking ito the cylinders, I have half expected this as it has been over heating alot recently. It has been mentioned by one garage that as the engine is a K series it is useless to replace/repair this problem as it will go again within 18 months, but other places have not said this, so the first question would be is this correct?
I have also been quoted prices of £650-£700 to get it done (from the garage that did the test) and a ball park figure of £450 + VAT from an engine specialist who hasn't seen the car as yet, do these sound like reasonable prices (this is my first car and I really am not too sure on prices, and as I am a student omoney is tight and I don't want to be ripped off!)
Many thanks in advance for help with this! Read more
a 30 day warranty,mm and as the engine may have stood in the breakers yard for 6 months and all gaskets/ ancilleries have deteriated to a point of breaking down. I personally wouldnt buy an engine like this for an over i would want to hear it running in the donor vehicle first before i parted with my money............sorry

Worn engine mount maybe?
I drove down the A3 from Kingston to the M25 at lunchtime. Did I miss something or is the first de-restriction sign not until the vicinity of the Pain's Hill junction, after miles of motorway-standard three-lane road restricted to 50 mph? Do the regulars take any notice?
And what about those 20 mph zones on the A308 approaching Kingston from the west -- Sunbury, Hampton, or was it the Portsmouth Road in Kingston? One of them seemed to last for less that a hundred yards or so -- distraction of change of speed limit, adjustment of speed, distraction of another change of speed limit, adjustment of speed, etc. I was looking out for schools, but am not sure that I saw any.
I have never used these routes before, so these are simply the comments/queries of the newcomer. Read more
Echo SjB's message about buses, especially since they appear to be the only vehicles exempt from limits in Kingston. You need to be lashed down to survive on a bus coming out of the centre.
I was travelling for a meeting with a local company this morning. Had to take a kind of 'bypass' dual carriageway with traffic travelling 70-80mph, plus slower trucks. It was raining and very windy, even though the road runs in a cutting. A BMW X5 came past me at about 80-85mph and pulled in front of a big truck in front. I didn't see exactly what happened in the next few seconds but then saw the X5 shoot across the hard shoulder and up the approx 30-degree embankment. Grass and mud flying everywhere. It came to a halt, without having rolled, pointed at about 90-deg to the road. Everyone slowing down to look of course, but since there was no damage I kept going. A very lucky driver I thought. Blow me down if about 10 minutes later he passes me further along the road doing about 85mph..! Well, at least he couldn't be accused of buying a 4x4 and never taking it off road. Read more
I heard somewhere that you can buy spray-on mud now....

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help, ive got v reg saxo 1.1, of witch im having problems getting dash lights/ignition hence the car wont start.
Now the story in full is the barrel got jammed the other day and the key wouldnt come out, this meant the ignition was staying on, and as it was dark and raining, the only thing i could do was lock it up and disconnet the battery.
When i came to look at the fault, i found that one of the three pins on the back of the barrel, you know the prongs that turn the ign swich, had broken off and jammed the ign switch, hence stopping the barrell from turning, now i have managed to repair the barrel prongs using a spare barrell i had lying around, but now on rebuilding it, the starter starts to turn over before the key gets that far (this also happens if i turn the ign switch manually, with a screwdriver)but i am also getting no dash lights except for the battery warning light.?? And the car doesnt start?? Any ideas anyone, i would appreciate your help..
Many thanks

hi, i have double checked the block connectors, ie brown black and grey, and each one has an individual notch cut out and they will only fit in one connector each. So any further assistance anyne may have will be appreciated.

Usual emergency vehicle sound from outside so I looked out the window to see what the flavour was. An ambulance was trying to make its way down a one-way two-lane road full of traffic queueing for Hammersmith Broadway a couple of hundred yards away. Left lane was pulling left and right lane pulling right to let the ambulance down the middle and this was proving generally successful. But behind the ambulance two cars were slipstreaming it down the middle. Now I've heard of this happening but I've never seen quite such a blatant example of this where the cars, many of whom had mounted the pavement to make way for the ambulance had to sit and wait for these scoundrels to pass them before they could rejoin their queue. The looks of frustrastion on their faces were very telling.
I'm not even sure whether such behaviour is illegal, despite the fact that it's extremely antisocial. Are there laws in place to stop them doing it? What could a copper have done them for? And could I have done anything to stop them if I was a driver just trying to rejoin my queue? I've never seen such blatant disregard for other road-users from the "I'm in a BMW so I can do this" brigade.

Peugeot 407 had weird electronic computer generated sounding indicators. New Mondeo has half decent sounding indicators. Audi S8 R reg had indicators so quiet, you had to struggle to work out if they were on or not.
How come there is such variation in sound/volume of indicators? Read more
I hope they never invent something that mimics the sound of a handbrake being applied without the knob being pressed in!

L\'escargot.
Am thinking of changing the car. Top choice at the moment is either another Mondeo TDCi or Focus estate, but since the arrival of daughter number 2 3 weeks ago am seriously considering an old shape Zafira.
Daily commute is a 100 mile round trip so would need to be Diesel, problem is the perfomance figures quoted don't look that great. Not overly concerned about top speed mainly in gear acceleration.
PS have considered all other options on cars and this is the definitive shortlist. Read more
Thanks for all the comments (sorry for late reply been away all weekend with no PC).
Does all sound very positive and think will go for one if can get in right price range. And don't mind getting something a bit slower now as don't really need it to be honest.
Thanks again.
take it back and tell them to polish it again with swirl mark remover,i jest not,and tell them to take more care with the electric buffer next time
