I have always wondered this (I should find my interesting things to think about really)...
How can the external air temperature sensor be accurate?
Surely the heat from the engine and wind chill make it inaccurate. Also where is the sensor typically placed?
It was very cold this morning, but I'm not convinced it was -2c like my car said!

So the top half of an average tank is 30kg, >>
You've forgotten the bottom half...:-)
I always remember that a gallon of water weighs 10lbs - multiply that by 12 and you are carrying approximately eight-and-a-half stones with (in my case) a full tank of fuel.
As certain specialist car manufacturers go to enormous lengths to cut out even the slightest amount of unnecessary weight, there is method in the madness.

Hi,
I've just had a new clutch and flywheel installed, when the garage tested this the slave cylinder exploded. this resulted in removing the gear box again and the car stuck in the garage for more days.
anyway they are having real trouble and have said they do not know whats happening or how to fix it. basicly everything seems to work fine in inital tests and inspection however when they try and bleed the cluch the engine locks up!
any ideas of suggestions for why this is happening or any ideas on how to resolve it?
thanks Read more
If it's not a rude question, what was the damage (£s)?

I guess it's more obvious with decreasing day length and more drivers going home from work in the dark - but around here there seems to be a huge number of vehicles with defective rear lights. Well, either rear lights, brake lights or, in the case of a MB Sprinter van I followed, both. [here's a hint - driver of deleted - name/shame rule applies. DD - it would be a good idea to check your lights].
If we had enough traffic cops, all these dodgy lights would give them a great excuse to stop vehicles and, while they're about it, check tax, insurance etc. Read more
And defective rear lights are not just restricted to failed lights. There's the earth fault variety which results in all sorts of odd things like indicators lighting up instead of brake lights and rear lights flashing instead indicators and one rear light going out when the opposite indicator comes on etc. etc.

the rubber seal at the top has come away slightly (approx 1 foot in lengh). what can i do to ;
1. put the seal back in (it keeps popping back out as soon as the pressure is off)? could i use glue?

Strongly recommend Halfords clear silicone sealant to glue the rubber seal in place. Comes in small tube and not expensive. I used it on my old Scenic screen rubber and repair was sound for the remainder of the time I owned the car, certainly better than the Dealer's pathetic attempt.

My 156 V6has only done 17,500 since new (98). I took the precaution of having the cam belt changed by a local Garage/Engineering firm who apart from generalservicing have a good reputation for engine rebuilds etc. The belt was changed and shortly after a noise from the cam belt area started to occur on start up. It sounded similer to a lolly stick rattleing round a bike wheel! The noise disapeared after about 1-2mins. This soon became 3-4mins and at this point returned it to the garage where they decided to change the tensioner which had not been changed before. This cured the start up rattle and all was well until last Saturday (1400 miles since the tensioner change) when the belt snapped and 23 out of 24 valves are now useless. Question, do Alfa recommend or insist changeing the tensioner when changing the belt. The garage by the way have stripped it down and checked the damage and found the tensioner in perfect working order and are at a loss to know why it snapped. I've seen the belt and there was no damage to the belt apart from where it tore itself apart. Do I have a case against the garage and if so how can I prove it. Any help appreciated. Thanks Read more
Mike, since your in Chiselhurst It'd be worth having a chat with Medway Alfa in Rainham 01634 388887 Ask for Dan Childs the Alfa service manager & tell him Jim Hearnden sent you. They were brilliant when I had my 156 & on an Alfa I wouldn't use anyone else in the South East. Richard their cheif tech is excellent on all Alfas.

I bought a car alarm from eBay. What attracted me to it was the remote start feature, but it's also a car alarm. I want to fit it into my Honda Prelude, but there were no instructions, just a little diagram and a little leaflet of do's and don'ts - Can anyone help me decipher the diagram? I uploaded it, and it's located at:

I am generally brilliant at electrics, but this is the first time I'm doing something in relation to the car's electrics, so help would be appreciated. Where it says that I need to connect to the "+" output, does it mean the positive wire of the direction light? The positive wire inside the car or in the bonnet? Most of the diagram doesn't make sense, especially the lower half of it where it says to connect to the handbrake, to the brake, to the charge indicator/oil pressure - How do I connect to them? Can someone please tell me where every wire goes? Don't want to make a mistake and spend a day trying to shut the damn thing off, Lol.
Thankyou in advance. Read more
> but where would it be connected to the direction lights - Inside the car?
There might be 2 outputs from the hazard warning light switch, one to each set of indicators. You can connect it on there inside the car. (This is where I connected the alarm indicator outputs on my land rover)
Getting a wiring diagram for your car would be a good place to start (if you haven't already got one)
Ok, here we go.
What ticks you off. What make you really angry when your behind the wheel.
If you had the power what one thing would you ban other drivers from doing? What would you ban on the road? eg: Trucks only on motorways between 7pm & 7am, no caravans etc.
I would ban anyone not using thier indicators. (Some Taxi drivers are great at this).
This really gets on my goat. They don't cost nothing to use. The people that don't use them could very easy cause an accident.
I put this behaviour down to being totally selfish.'I'm all right jack, I know where I'm going'.
Anyway, the main thing is what would you ban and why? Read more
Not a darn thing!
We're a gifted lot in here thinking and posting about motoring. It should be up to us to compensate for the ignorance, narrow-mindedness, stupidity, forgetfulness and ineptitude of our fellow motorists; in advanced societies, the strong look after the weak. Lead by example, don't look for conflict and arrive safely. Someone cuts you up, doesn't indicate, tailgates you; so what? We all have the potential to defuse most situations by application of thought, restraint and skill. Ban the vehicles or drivers who cause us momentary inconvenience? What would we have left to talk about? Challenges, lunatics, personality defects, road hogs; bring 'em on, I say.

Having asked for help from Backroomers, I like to subsequently let you know the outcome.
As suggested, I started out with 'Confused' and was impressed by their rapid response. I then made some phone calls and ended up with Direct Choice on 0800 458 1750 who tightened their belts to offer the best deal.
Their quote was about half of the one offered by a company who said they would 'quote me happy'!!!
My thanks to all of you.
The car has developed a worrying problem, in that it grinds the gears when changing up or down, and even reverse. However, if I double de-clutch, almost always it changes gear ok. I thought that it may have been the clutch on its way out, but that doesn?t slip if I put my foot down to accelerate. It also doesn?t slip, if I put it in 1st, with the hand brake on, and try to move. The engine labours to the point of stalling, before I put the clutch back in again.
There does seem to be a lot of play in the top end, with the gear stick.
Is it likely to be worn components in the remote selector unit, of is it more likely to be synchromesh problems in the box itself?
Should I start looking in the scrap yards now, or is it likely to be fixable by a non professional?

Try lifting the pedal (against a light resistance) whilst an assistant pulls against the cable at the gearbox end. This resets the adjuster.
