Is it dangerous to have slightly different profile tyres on the same axle? I have a loan car which has 195/55/R15 on 3 wheels and one odd (the spare I think, it's not an alloy) on 195/60/R15s. The odd couple are on the rear of a fwd car. The tyre presssures were all over the shop, 2 front wheels on 38psi and one rear on 15 psi (the odd wheel) the other on the same axle was 46psi! Any idea what the correct pressures are for a primera? I've put them around 34 at the front and 30 at the rear (slightly warm). I assuming a previous driver saw the odd sized wheels and thought it would be sensible to even up the sizes by over inflating one and underinflating the other!

Thanks for all the info gents, I have now had the
opportunity to read the 'owners guide'. The only reference to
the difference between the steel spare and the alloys is- "the
wheel nuts of alloy wheels can only be used for the
steel spare wheel for a short time (maximum two weeks)" !!
Two weeks of 500 miles per day or two weeks of
sitting on my drive I wonder??

It's probably a corrosion issue, so time is the only factor, not miles.

K11 Micra. Engine is flooding every morning and it is a swine to get started.
Seems it can't handle a cold engine rich mix.

Will replacing the spark plugs fix this (they have been in for 50k)?
Is replacing the plugs a newbie job or should I get a garage to work on it?

Thanks

You do realise this thread is14 years old and no-one has updated it in 12?

Yeh, sooooo last-century....

I've been driving for years so should know this but I don't.
I have to park my car with great precision-about 15 mm clearance along rear wheel arch and rubbing strip.(It's a long silly story). I park on dead level ceramic tiles so everything is very controllable. I manoeuvre entirely with the clutch pedal and the engine on tick over.
So all I'm doing is applying engine power to wheels aren't I? That is not slipping the clutch is it?
Clutch slip is where you put 3000 revs on and let the clutch in to get out of an underground carpark with 4 on board--isn't it?

Or have I got it all wrong? TIA Read more

Article in todays Times about a couple who got two speeding fines through the post, made up some tale about a Turkish colleague (including flying there and sending back a bogus postcard), being caught and fined £12,000 pounds for "perverting the course of justice"......

Anyway - the Times included a jokey bit about speed camera excuses which made me chuckle.....

"I had to rush my dying hamster to the vet"

"There was a strong wind behind that pushed my car over the limit"

"My Friend had just chopped his fingers off and I was rushing the digits to hospital"

"I was in the airports flight path and the camera was triggered by a jet overhead and not my car"

"The vibrations from the surfboard on the roof rack set off the camera"

And my fav by a long way, so good it should have earned a discharge

"I had passed out after seeing flashing lights in the distance, which I believed to be UFO's. The flash of the speed camera brought me round"

Thank you Sierraman. I'm going to challenge it anyway, but I was wondering if it was better to wait for the 28 days to elapse (in which case the procedure is automatic) or to make it clear now that I would see them in court.

It's clear from the form that they are not expecting a reply, so I am inclined to do the opposite.

Before I start I don't profess to a huge amount about cars and car buying so please don't berate me for my lack of knowledge. The very fact I'm asking for help here tells you I would appreciate your advice.

OK, it's new car time (or rather nearly new, I don't buy new cars), I've got a budget of £12K-17K (17 is absolute max not one penny more), I want a car that's 2 years old or less and I'm looking for something in the luxury/presitge/executive end of the market and I'm looking for a Saloon or Executive hatchback type of car.

I know I can get a 1-2 year old X-Type 2.5L V6 Sport for about 15K which is nicely in the middle of my price range. The 2.5L has AWD and the V6 provides plenty of spunk.

Why I like the X-Type: I think it's a nice mix of luxury, power and praciticality and I like:

The drive is smooth and comfortable but sporty enough to be fun and felt like there was plenty of power left if I wanted it.
The quality inside is nice and it feels like a luxury car and has a great finish.
The Cabin Space is large and comfortable, I'm a big guy (6'2" and 19 stone (it's all muscle honest ;) ) and I don't feel cramped and actually have to pull the seat forwards.
I don't particularly like the instruments on the X-Type but I'll learn to live with them.
I have a wife and 2 kids and there is plenty of room for them when needed.
I quite like the external look of the car particularly the sport version.
It will be quite expensive to run but I'm not too concerned about that.
As a status symbol I quite like the X-Type it's a bit understated and (I feel) allows me to show off a bit without actually doing it overtly.
Basically I can't find anything I really don't like about it.

Obviously before getting into this I have done some research and these are some of the other cars I've checked out and tried and very briefly what I thought:

BMW 3 Series (various): Drives ok, is VERY barren inside and EVERYTHING is extra, doesn't feel like a luxury car at all, instead feels like a nicely crafted metal box that someone happens to have attached four wheels and an engine to in a rather clever way.

Audi A4 2.0L FSI Sport: Again barren and boring inside, and simply pathetic drive even the 2L Disel Jaguar is a more exciting drive than this POS. A bit cramped inside, no quality finish and SO DULL.

Audi A6: Too expensive anyway, but better quality, the drive is just as flat and boring though. Are only the Audio TT's any fun to drive?

Mercedes C Class: Mercedes have WAY TOO MANY models so maybe they have something I should have tried and haven't because I simply don't know about it. Anyway the Merc was OK but not that fun at all and they seem VERY common now. Maybe if I was looking for a cheap deal I might buy one but I'm not after the cheapest car I can get here. It may have won some awards but it didn't ring my bell.

Volvo S60: I haven't test driven this one but I am thinking I might, it looks quite nice and they are quite cheap. Anyone tried/got one and do you like it? Worth a look?

Lexus: I think this would be too expensive and they don't seem too common either, is this worth examing further?

OK, help me out here, is there something I have missed that I should be looking at? Or things I should be aware of before buying? Please don't just slag off the X-Type but also say what you would choose instead and why it is better than the X-Type.

Thanks,

Nope, they were'nt run flats, just marked J on the sidewall, looked like standard P600's to me!

My son, bless his cotton socks, has asked me to send his sleeping bag to him at university.......

It has to get there by next friday (21 October). Royal Mail standard parcels is 3-5 working day delivery - so I don't feel I can trust them to get it there on time. My office has an account with Interlink, but although it is only 1.75kg it can only go on the standard service as it won't fit in the mandatory bag for the under-5kg service. Bottom line is that it's gonna cost over £17 to send!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it there more cheaply, and on time?? I will continue to trawl for other couriers but some pointers in a useful direction would be good! Read more

If you really want to know how much we're subsidising you, I suggest that you look for the fees they charge non-home students. You will note that lab based courses are more expensive than non-lab based courses - and that medics and vets have to pay even more.

Try towing a vehicle on an A frame, thru Dartford toll booths - that REALLY confuses them!!

Is it a trailer or TWO vehicles & if it's a van, on the frame, is it the higher fee, to be applied, if it is considered another vehicle??

I am looking to buy a BMW 525TDSSE Auto, 1996, N, with SH to 130k,Mileage is 160k, for £1,800. The car has A, Leather interior and is in very good condition.
I would like to hear from any owners of this particular model as to how reliable are these cars, and whether it is
likely to give much problem (if so, what are the common faults) Also, will the car be likely to drink more fuel than the suggested manufacturers mpg figures with 160k miles on the clock?
Does this car sound like a good buy?
Many thanks

This website gives a lot of information
scroll the left hand panel for E34 info and buying advice

www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html

I have a BMW (not E34 or diesel) but it has done about 150K miles and has been very reliable and still drives superbly ( I had a brand new 55 reg 3 series diesel coupe last week as a courtesy (sp!) car when my wife's MINI was in for service and mine still compared very favourably. The E34 is regarded as one of the best models BMW made and I think it sounds an excellent buy at £1800. My advice would be to make the usual checks (all BMW's drive very well even at this mileage so if it doesn't feel good on a test drive it probably needs investigation)- inc HPI etc - and if you buy keep the car away from the main dealer, the prices these days are really high and they are focused on the company car market. Find a good independent BMW specialist who will charge about £40/hour( £100 at the main dealer) and consider getting the following changed:
Oil & filter
coolant
brake fluid
differential oil
Auto box fluid

the car will then hopefully give good service for many years.
And for trim parts, lenses, wipers, etc Euro Car Parts are very good value and do a huge range for older BMW's and have a good mail order service.

Good luck

Hi all.

Tell me;

a) Why they're so cheap 5k, 36,000 miles.

b) Why I shouldn't get one.

I only ask because Renaults seem more reliable than Citroens and Peugeots but maybe I've been in the lucky ones.

Cheers

Me too. I had a 2002 Laguna. Bought it fairly cheap at 5years old with only 20k on the clock. Traded it in 4 years later with 65k on the clock. No major issues apart an electric window motor. Mine was a 1.8 petrol not the 3.0 though. Really comfortable car. If you get a good one you can't beat them. If you get a bad one they can be an expensive nightmare. That's why they sell cheap.

I thought this was a discussion forum, my mistake apparantly it
is a listen to what you're told ....

In that case, listen to what I have to say -

I feel you have wasted enough of people's time; they've offered you advice, which you in turn have thrown back in their faces,

therefore, thread locked.
