What happens if you find yourself at a toll without cash or credit card?

You get turned round and sent away. Ive seen this happen at the Mersey tunnels once or twice - its a hell of a drive round via Runcorn!

Could you offer to wash the windscreens of the next 50 cars to go through?

Is this always possible ?

I suppose it depends on the layout of the toll plaza. At the Mersey, you only pay on the Wirral side, so if you get to the booth from the Liverpool side with no means of paying you are taken through the booths, turned round and sent back through the tunnel.

When on the continent, arrive at the telepass bay. Press the help button and shout continually in English, eventually they'll let you through without payment.

Reminds me of a saying of my grandads: 'To be understood in Europe all you need to do is shout - and point a gun at them!' Of course his European touring experience occurred in 1944-45...

I once drove on the Autostrada from the Venice area to the Italian /Austrian border and got in a long queue to pay at the last Toll/Peage.
When it got to my turn to pay I realised that I was in the cash only lane (I had no money left only c/cards)_ and the cashier repeatedly waved away all my credit cards - I spoke no Italian and he spoke little English, eventually after much gesturing and hand waving and impatient Italians hooting their horns the cashier came out of the booth and wrote down my reg no and filled in this form which he handed a copy to me and pointed at a small nearby office/admin block and indicated that I had to either post or deliver the toll money to the office within 14 days.
When I stopped later and looked at the notice properly I realised he had written down my reg no incorrectly - transposed the numbers - so I simply threw the notice in the bin!! Never heard any more...............presumably someone somwhere got a strange letter from the Italian Autostrade company!

A few years ago I landed at Denver airport, picked up a hire car, slung my bag in the boot and drove away. One wrong turning later I find myself on a toll road, parked in the hard shoulder rummaging through my bag in the boot to find a few quarters so I can get back off the road again. Very irritating.

These days I keep a few quid in change in the car, in a little closeable drawer. If someone breaks in and nicks it, my bad, but they'd have to be psychic to know it was there.

You might not have any luck trying to pay by Credit Card either.

If you have no means of paying, they just take your Reg Number and invoice you for the Toll and an admin fee.

That might be worth trying in Merseyside, too.

This happened to me at the Dartford tunnel a few years back. They wouldn't accept credit cards, only cash or cheques, so I was asked to pull over to the left and had my details taken and I had to pay double within a certain time period or pay a fine.

Paid it on the way back over the bridge the next day.

Bit embarassing really

Speaking of the Dartford Tunnel Tolls -

They were supposed to end in 2001 when the cost of constructing the tunnel had been covered .

Then 'before your very eyes' we had a ' consultation process' which was ignored , a report was commissioned and found to be flawed because it came to the wrong conclusion and lo and behold the toll charges are still imposed and will remain for ever.

Read all about it here www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/a_roads/a2/dart.../

They are very strict at the Dartford Tunnel. Some time ago I had a Dart-Tag. My car was being mended and I was getting a lift home in a friend's van. I had my Dart-Tag in my pocket. When we got to the tunnel, I said to him, here, let's use this! (Forgetting the van toll was 30p more). The barrier went up but as my friend accelerated through the quick-thinking booth attendant actually leapt in front of the van to stop us. He came round and gave my friend a typical British jobsworth earful, threatening to have him prosecuted for fraud, etc.

When he stopped ranting I pointed out to him that he'd just risked being seriously injured by running in front of an accelerating van, all to prevent his employers being done out of 30p.

Try towing a vehicle on an A frame, thru Dartford toll booths - that REALLY confuses them!!

Is it a trailer or TWO vehicles & if it's a van, on the frame, is it the higher fee, to be applied, if it is considered another vehicle??

Answers on postcards only please, to Dartag Ltd
