I've been shopping round for four Vredestein Quatrac 185/65/15 tyres for my Berlingo Multispace and was quoted £248 fitted by Ness City Tyres, Dingwall Tyres quoted £225 and the much smaller Invergordon Tyre Services asked for just £204 and provided very prompt and cheerful service. The difference in ride quality between the Vredesteins and the original just-legal Michelin Energy tyres is very noticeable, more comfort and much less noise. However, the Michelins did manage over 31,000 miles. Talk to Richard at ITS, he's a nice man to do business with..though he won't accept credit cards but will trust you to go off to the nearest bank to get the cash!!

Hi All, a question for my boss (so please answer and keep me in the good books).
He has just ordered his next company car, an A4 Avant with the free symphony radio upgrade. I seem to recall that there is a jack socket in the glove box where a generic MP3 player can be plugged in. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? as the Audi site is a bit poor on the details of the equipment.
Cheers

I dont think the Audi has this, partly because they want you to buy the Phat Box if you want to play MP3's.
I actually put an MP3 head-unit in my A4 Avant due to this same issue.
I have to say I love the Audi to bits, but they do make it awkward for you if you want to do anything that is not Audi approved or supplied.
It is usually accepted that if another driver flashes his headlights he is giving way to you (except on a motorway where it is usually a signal to 'move over')
However The following comes from the highway code:-
90: Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights in an attempt to intimidate other road users.
91: If another driver flashes his headlights never assume that it is a signal to go. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.
Practice seems to have developed this signal to be interpreted in almost the opposite of what the HC states. I wonder therefore how you would stand should there be a 'prang'. I suppose stating 'he flashed his lights so I thought it ok to proceed' would be useless. Does anyone actually flash as an warning 'I'm here and I'm coming though'? - except on motorways of course! Well, how about this:
90: Flashing headlights... Do not flash your headlights in an attempt to intimidate other road users.
I believe the above situation (flashing to overtake) will get the "flasher" in trouble nowadays in Germany, serious enough (fine? licence points?) to mean the custom has just about died out.
It's the same with the left indicator when in the outside lane, no longer used much, I suspect the repercussions could be major.
This is why cars like the new Audis have grilles like drain covers, shouting "Get out of my way, peasant!".
I must say I find flashing headlights very aggressive on motorways etc.
I have never ever heard of flashing before overtaking, but I fear it would be interpreted as "get out of my way, you stupid peasant, you're going far too slowly!" and could prompt slower cars to pull out on purpose.
Better to calm down and take things easy for a bit methinks...

My M reg Saab 9000 CDXS has a 4 speed interior fan control that only works on speed 4 - is it likely to be just a matter of a new control and if so how do you get to it to remove it.

i had a look at the weekend but could not identify teh resistor pack - there was a black plastic cover held by two screws which had underneath it a metal component with two wires leading to it with spade clip type fittings - the metal component was attached to the trunking by another lead whih looked likel a sensor of some kind - i assume that this was not teh resistor pack.
Can you give me any more clues on access to the resistor pack ?

I have seen a 99 'V' 1.8 LX Estate in dark metallic blue, warranted 78K miles, MOT, for £995 (trader)
Why is this so cheap, seems too good to miss. My experience of french cars is that they are very good if properly maintained.
I am beginning to smell a rat though, £995 seems too cheap to me. Xantias aren't bad are they? Provided the hydropneumatics are all working, it's basically robust Peugeot bits and pieces? Read more
Good to hear from you again M.M - all too rare these days. Hope you, the Xantia (and BX??) are still going strong!

Hi people,
This is second-hand information pasted on by my father, because he's kinda useless with forums ;)
He has an 806 (W-reg) with a radio/casette player. In the boot, there's a little compartment for a CD auto-changer. The blue plug is there to plug one in.
So, the other day he got a CD auto-changer, plugged it in, and... nothing!
You can press the 'source' button as much as you like, but it just switches between radio and casette. :(
Does he need a different radio for it to work? Or is he missing something? Read more
From memory, the Peugeot 306 head unit is a Bosch (Blaupunkt) unit, that requires a different changer to the 406 (for example). The changers all look the same, being made by Clarion for Peugeot. The changers have slightly differing model numbers...you would need to check with Peugeot the correct type for your head unit. The powering up and scanning of the discs suggests the changer is otherwise OK. One last thing, beware of changers from the 406 saloon. This car leaks water into the changer (from a faulty tail light cluster). I would be wary of buying changers from this source.
Have a Y reg Espace, which has overnight travelled 44,000 miles
The odometer was reading 55,0000 miles ish last night and on turn on this morning read 99,000 miles and the trip odometer read 2245miles (was zero'd two days ago after fuelling). Any ideas anyone as Renault are about as useful as a choclate fireguard. No other problems with display and the odometer and trip odometer seem to be functioning okay now, only 44,000 miles further than they should be. Any help most welcome. Read more
It could never be the other way around could it!

I've got a 306 1.4 petrol (of 1994 vintage) myself, and it's running very hot (around the 100 degrees mark), and i just fitted a new head gasket about 2 days ago. I think they're naturally hot-running engines, so it would be advisable to keep the cooling system in pristine condition so as not to end up in the situation i was in a few days ago (exhaust pipe like a steam cleaner...)
Watched this film the other night.
What version of the Dodge Challenger was shown?
Badging suggests a T/A which a website reveals as having 290bhp (American Ponies no doubt) and being prone to severe understeer.
Maybe that is why the hero spent most of his time departing from the tarmac!
Sounded pretty nice but doubt it could have out-run a Jaguar E type in the right hands.

"It wasn't a yellow one with a black roof was it?" - Crumbs! I have trouble remembering my own name in the morning! It was dark and in winter; I was travelling with my friend, who was riding his Suzuki GT500 a little way behind me. I didn't see it spin, just noticed it had disappeared. My friend pulled alongside at the next set of lights and shouted how he had to brake to a stop and waited whilst it manoeuvered back to the right direction, no damage done (wide oneway section there).

Sometimes the speed rating affects the price of tyres but in the unexpected direction.
My car uses 205/60 H15 which I was quoted £68 for Goodyear NCT5 - however 205/60 V15 were only £62 so I had these fitted.
A good tyre fitter / dealer will identify these anomalies and pass the savings on to the customer.
