Have you checked the obvious things like the coolant level is ok? If not, you have a leak and it should be fixed asap. If you overheat the engine, you run the risk of blowing the headgasket and possibly warping the cylinder head in the process. In the case of the latter, you are begining to enter the realms of serious money.

If the cooling system of a Citroen ZX loses a large amount of coolant it gets airlocks which prevent the coolant from circulating properly. You can only get rid of the airlocks by bleeding the system at a couple of bleed points. The 306 is mechanically similar, although this may be entirely a red herring.

Hi

What engine does your 306 have? If its the 1.9 diesel/turbo diesel, the normal operating temperature is usually between 80 and 85 deg, once the thermostat has opened at around 85deg, not sure about the petrol 306s though, pretty similar I'd have thought.
If it overheats within the first 10 mins of starting it could be a sticking thermostat, especially if the coolant level seems ok.
If the coolant level is low, have a look for any leaks, especially around the radiator and hoses/joints.
Could also be a blocked radiator if coolant level seems ok.
My advice is to get it checked ASAP, before it gets very expensive!!!

I've got a 306 1.4 petrol (of 1994 vintage) myself, and it's running very hot (around the 100 degrees mark), and i just fitted a new head gasket about 2 days ago. I think they're naturally hot-running engines, so it would be advisable to keep the cooling system in pristine condition so as not to end up in the situation i was in a few days ago (exhaust pipe like a steam cleaner...)
