New tyre's required just after the 18,000 mile service and a comment on the service that the brakes would need seeing to on the next service.

2nd service new discs required as binding - Renault have offerred to pay 50% trade price - but I have to pay 50% of retail price nearly £200 but the dealer will not contribute anything. Dealer was curt in his response to my asking if it was correct that the cars are stored abroad in a compound and the disc get rusty - prior to delivery the discs should be cleaned if not cleaned then they bind - Could this be anything to do with the problem? Has anyone else experienced this? Is it unusual for discs to need replacing so soon? First car I have had that needed tyre's and discs in the first 2 years.

I can't understand why you are having to pay anything for new discs, if there is a fault with them, which there must surely be. Some years ago, I had the discs replaced on a ZX, because they were distorted. The warranty covered it.

Question Volvo 240 1993
Peter D

My good lady arrive back at lunch time to report that the old faithfull 240 ES 1993 B200 LH 3.1 ( one of the last ) ran very rough after being parked for 10 minutes. Then it cleared and was parked for 2.5 hours and again ran very rough and jerky would not pull but eventually cleared and she drove home the 15 miles. I have tested all sensors, no fault codes and checked all fuses as these are always prone to corrosion. Wnet for a run but car playing up and dose not clear. Suspect fuel pump but it is running anthough the current it takes 3.5 amps at first falls to 1.6 amps after 1 minute, high pressure pump appears noisey but is running. Gave up for today but will have to do pressure checks tomorrow. Anyone any other sugestions what I sould check. I did note that the idle was being controlled although the valve tests Ok resistance wise at 8 ohms and there is a 12v feed. Thanks Guys Read more

Hi All,

Need some more advice. The other driving down the motorway the dashboad lights temporarily went out. After fiddling with the main light switch the dash lights came back to life. This happended a couple of times on the journey. I suspect that there is a loose connection somewhere but don't really know where to start looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I now have no dash lights at all and it makes driving at night difficult as I can't see how fast I am going.

Seem to remember you have to remove the section of "under dashboard trim" (if that makes sense) that it is mounted in. IIRC it's only a couple of screws and an easy job. When you've removed it, taking the switch out is fairly obvious.

Does anyone know what would happen if your tax was up for renewal, but your car didn't have an MOT on it?? The way I understand it you have to renew your tax straight away, but you also need an MOT certificate to renew your car tax.

I have both coming up soon and I don't want to be running around trying to get work for the MOT just because of this new law. Do they make exceptions or is it just a stupid rule?? Read more

Where would one normally expect the condensation from air conditioning to drain to? Is it normal to have it draining from different parts of the floor pan? This is currently happening with our C5 and I have never seen any sign of it draining from there before in over 2 years. It is even draining from the sills, at times.

The local Citroen dealer has been not very helpful thus far. I rang them about it last week and they suggested that I call in and get the car checked out. My wife went down there today, as she was out nearby, and they told her it was quite normal and didn't even bother to look at the car. Is it normal, that is what I would like to know? Read more

Having looked under the undertray of my C5 several times I can say there is nothing that matters if the tray were to fill with water.

All Backroomers have an interest in their cars, but do you show as much interest in your home as your car?

We all buy cars to get from A to B. Our needs are always different and choices are limited by our budget (or someone elses for a company car).

When buying a home are you as fussy as when buying a car? Is the specification of extras with a car more important than at home e.g. do you have air conditioning in your car and home?
Do you maintain your car to a high standard and likewise with your home?

There are different considerations that could be compared like road tax and company car benefit to council tax. Would you buy a home by how much the rates were?

Motoring is only one expense that a household has, do these other pressures seriously impact your decission to either maintain your car or improve your home?

Personally I run a 7 year old car and am currently renovating my home to a very high standard. The car is useful to transport rubbish to the dump, an older car makes sense to do this. Car maintenance is important and sometimes I carry our simple DIY, but also use garages for speed and reliabilty. Most of the work around the home I will do, but again I will call in tradesmen to work that is either beyond my skills or they can do a better job as they have specialist skills or equipment. I bought my car because I wanted it, not because it costs £170 in Road Tax (ouch!), but there again where I live has the highest village precept on the rates bill adding a couple of hundred pounds a year to the bill. I certainly do not have air conditioning at home, but there again neither do I have it in the car. I will probably fit it to the house before I get a car with aircon. I believe that my money is better spent on the appreciating asset of my home as it make life better for the family, rather than buying a newer car which is a depreciating asset. Also remember that you usually do spend a lot more time at home than in your car.

What do you think?

PU towers is an ongoing project a mixture of old and new. It is a home not a house. I have no idea, and I don't care to know what its worth.

Cars are another matter, my latest is the first I've owned for years and when I sell it soon it will have cost me a packet - but I can't help myself.

I like cars but I prefer my house.

I thought it was illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving.

I know it is illegal but throughout this summer I have been amazed at the number of times I have seen drivers blatantly doing so without any attempt to do it discreetly. Car drivers, Van drivers(the worst),truck drivers -- and quite often coach drivers with a full load of passengers on board! I'll admit I,ve done it myself a few times but at least I,ve tried to do so discreetly (got hands free now though)

However, I have just seen the best! Nipped out lunch time and has to wait at junction with high street. Waiting to pull out was our friend in the white van (except it was black) window open and talking away on his mobile - I could easily hear his side of the conversation. Also stood on the same corner as me was a police officer in uniform who, unless deaf would also have been able to hear. Vanman made no attempt to stop and in fact after a few minutes of continued talking, contolled & steered away one handed. The police officer totally ignored him! I was going to say to the officer that I thought it was illegal to use a mobile whilst driving but I thought I might arrested for being cheeky.

After the law was changed there seemed to be a dramatic reduction in this practice but it now seems to back to 'normal'
Any views and does anyone know anyone, themselves perhaps who have actually been prosecuted under this law - I don't.

I was having a moment of deep thought last night, and the outcome of it was...Why in this day and age do car engines still get manufactured in such as way that they need head gaskets?

I know about the rotary engines etc, but on a normal engine there is always a head gasket that requires you to take half the engine to bits to get to it. Could they not make them so that the gasket is alot nearer the top or do away with it all together!!!! Thougts please. Read more

To return to the original question posed....

Why do we moan about the price of fuel and still use our cars when we really don't need to.

I do, I was home t'other night when friends phoned and rather than speak on the phone we jumped in the car and drove round - a 60 mile round trip.....We're no exception I'm sure. (at least 1.5 gallons)
