Forum Top-Boxes
IanJohnson

Just read the motoring bulleting from DT and there is a complaint from someone whose top-box came open at 70mph!

The instructions which came with mine say you should not exceed 60mph with it fitted (although many do) perhaps HJ should point this out.

Ours is only ever fitted when needed, how many others leave them on all the time? Read more

This year my roofbox will contain 8 pairs of skis and the car will have 5 adults on board. My friend's Grand Cherokee will have 5 more people on board (two will be hiring).

Try doing that without a roofbox.

As for hiring skis when I get there, no chance. My Rossignol Zenith's are my babies and they're coming with me!

firstly thanks to every1 that has helped so far in getting my 306 working again, the car now runs and drives like new with no sign of the white smoke issues i was having or poor starting, only thing now is that when i floor it and the turbo cuts in there is a visible puff of blue smoke, any ideas on the cause of this? the oil is coming up for change so thinking of getting some engine flush to put through it first anybody think of any other cause?

thought I'd poke my nose into this thread and point a few things out.
Using 100% bioderv for long periods of time will perish the seals in the pump as it doesnt lubricate the seals like diesel dos, instead it dries them out.
Using 100% unrefined veg oil will work on just about every derv after 1990, some earlier models are fine as well but best to research.
The downside of unrefined veg oil is the fatty parts in it, they wax up injectors and pump, this is where the old lucas/cav and bosch queries come into force. the bosch pump copes with them better.
Use refined veg oil which is generally derived from used veg oil hence the chip shop smell and you dont get the waxing problems that comes with unrefined but still you will have seals perishing.

For optimal performance use either a 80% bioderv to 20% diesel mix permanently asthis will run without seal issues, no loss of performance, less smoke and no odours.
If you want to run on normal unrefined veg oil then use a 50/50 mix with normal diesel and every 4th tank fill with 100% diesel and some injector cleaner to remove all traces of waxing.

HDI's can run on these mixes but you need to clean the injectors more frequently as they are more precise and therefore more vulnerable to waxing.

PS, I have done a lot of research into these comments and currently studying chemical engineering honours degree with a view going into bio fuel engineering.

Hello all. I'm trying to fix a minor annoyance with my Golf cab & despite posting it in technical, no joy. So out of the seemingly infinite amount of VW forums out there which one is the most sensible for the non 'max power' generation please?

For what it's worth here's the original post:

Hiya. I'd like to address an annoyance in the above car, which showed up during tour of France some while ago. Essentially it seems to need thinking time between pressing the accelerator for a swift overtake & actually doing it. What I was hoping is there a nice quick & cheap fix for this? A known issue?

Don't need anymore power, it's a cab (& therefore heavy) so not much point & besides it's done over 150k.

Any thoughts? It's only a 'would be nicer.' Lived with it for 5 years!

Thank you all for looking at this. Read more

All,
first post so please forgive me if this is in the wrong place or I breach any forum etiquette.

SWMBO has decreed that she would like a new Mini Cooper to replace our ageing Scenic.
This seems to be a good proposition however given the hype surrounding the Mini and it's popularity there appears to be no room for negotiation on price at my local dealer. Is it worth looking further afield for better discounts or do I just have to grin and bear it. I will not be using BMW / Mini finance as cash is available.

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

But is now to late to buy the MINI - perhaps the smart buyers were those who bought 2+years ago? When's the new one due out? Will that bring on a more relsitic price for the older version?

Hi All.

I have a 97 Mondeo TD. When I first start driving the car is very stiff to get into 2nd gear.(1,3,4,5,R, are fine). After about 5 mins of driving it second gear becomes much smoother to get in like it should do. Any ideas why this is happening?

Regards,

Now there's an understatement!

I agree with your point about tooth pressure - the maximum combination of tooth stiffness occurs at the pitch point. As the teeth are effectively cantilevers, the stiffness falls off rapidly as the point of contact moves out beyond the pitch circle.

I have been surprised, virtually every time, to see the footprint test patterns of aircraft gearboxes that I've been involved with the stressing of. Despite the attempts made to account for casing, bearing, and shaft deflections, post footprint test adjustments to the mesh were the rule rather than the exception.

Round The Bend

I just purchased a Mondeo which reaches its third birthday at the beginning of December. My plan is to put it through a service a week or two before to pick up any niggles that should be covered under the manufacturers warranty - which I assume is a 3 year warranty.

Is this a reasonable plan? Does anyone know what the warranty covers and if adjustments (for instance, jerky clutch needs adjustment) would be covered?

I think somewhere along the way someone added the word "uniquely" to what I wrote. What I meant was that the dealer who supplied the vehicle would also give the (free, optional) 2nd and 3rd years warranty. Not that the work could only be carried out at that location, but as stated in later posts, at any Ford dealer.
(try the other end of the stick ;-))

I am negotiating on a September 2003 Renault Espace which was purchased in Cyprus new by a member of the forces. He is informing me it has 3 years warranty.

The warranty document states the warranty is indeed 3 years, but only workshops of Renault/Eurovec network are authorized to carry out any operations under this warranty".

I work for Inchcape and I understand that in the UK Renault itself provides the warranty and Ren UK top it with an additional 2 years. Its not on any Ren UK database as I have had it checked.

I suspect I should take a seperate warranty from an independent company for peace of mind.

Hi all,

My mate's got the above car and is looking at getting rid in favour of a diesel. We went looking at a Seat Ibiza TDi 130 yesterday at a Seat dealers and were very impressed with the acceleration. It just seemed to keep pulling and pulling and it was so quiet when cruising.

Anyway, the Seat dealer couldn't have been more helpful. He took us up to a bypass and let us have a blast around and seemed like a decent bloke. I was amazed he let him have a drive to be honest given our ages.

Anyway, my mate really liked it (I did too to be honest) and we went inside to get down to the figures. He went off to do a check on my mate's Clio as he wanted to part ex. (The dealer had gone for a spin in it beforehand and have given it the once over).

He came back and said that it was coming up as an import as there was no data on it. When he said that, we remembered how when my mate first bought the car, the manuals were all in German but with that being nearly a year ago, we'd completely forgotten.

Nevertheless, the dealer still wanted to...well - do a deal. He kept pressing my mate for a value on what he wanted on his car but my mate kept quiet (probably best in this case - keep reading). Eventually, the dealer came out with a figure of 6 grand part ex against the Seat with a value of £7695. He was testing the water and I reckon would raise that figure a little quite easily. That figure was based on it being an import and having no service history as my mate never had the stuff in the car and has no idea if it has it or not.

So, I just want your thoughts really. What value would you assign to it under each of these conditions;

* Part ex with FSH
* Part ex without FSH
* Private with and without FSH

Was 6 grand a good offer? I was blown away to be honest. When he said it was an import I thought he was going to offer less than 5.

Just to make it easy, the car's done the better part of 50,000 miles and has all the kit - half leather, xenons, auto lights/wipers, disc changer, climate and all the works and is an 02 model on a '51 plate.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
