Has anyone got one of these? I've been talked into finding a good reliable, cheap, smallish estate for someone. I've seen a 1997 'R' reg for sale (trader) for £1995.
Attractions are it's immaculate, only done 60K and has the Honda engine.
I'm hoping to beat the price down to £1750. Afterall, no-one seems to want Rovers now they've gone under.
But is this model any good?
Thanks Read more
Tourer, with Honda unit auto is not as bad as K series.but not worth £1750,however good. Those that like them may well pay the price. But unless it comes with warranty *and be carefull on this*there are better cars around for not much more,As a ps I like them, had one, but with 2 litre unit manual-more greif than it was worth.Up to you really but be *carefull*

Can anyone please suggest an equivalent, cheaper alternative for oil for the above on LongLife service; ie, the equivalent to VW's 506 00 spec. Must I look for the 'LongLife' designation or would any 0w30 stuff do? I've heard that Halford's has a suitable own-brand, rather than the Castrol stuff I've been using.
Many thanks!

Make sure that it is 506.01, not 506.00.
I recently bought 4 litres of Castrol Longlife 11 for £34-77 from Midland Car Parts in Derby. I think that it was less than other places locally.
You must use the correct oil in a PD engine, it is much less money than a new engine!
Also you can leave the oil in for longer than a cheaper oil, thus saving a new filter and the oil more often.
A quote from today's Telegraph.
Driver jailed after 47th ban offence
A motorist described in court as having the most convictions for driving while disqualified was jailed for a year yesterday after he flouted a ban for the 47th time.
Jamie Manderson,32, a nightclub doorman from Swindon, Wilts, also had more than 130 other convictions, magistrates in Weymouth, Dorset, were told.
His latest ofences occurred on Sept 7 when he drove away from a petrol station without paying for £35.00 of fuel.
Why is it some people think laws do not apply to them. Personally I do not think the sentence was long enough.

Here here! Funny, I quickly formed a mind picture of this gentleman. I have absolutely no wish whatsover to ever find out how acurate!
Hi All
I have been offered an X-reg ford focus estate 1.8tdci for £1500. it is in excellent condition but has high mileage (150k) although all these miles have been long journeys and hard driving. it has a full ford service history (was a company car) but that stopped at 120k so it has done 35k since its last service. it had the timing belt replaced at 120k.
it seems a good deal when i look at what i could pay for a similar car, but what should i look out for? and if i go ahead, what would you recommend i get done as a matter of urgency?
thanks for any advice!

thanks Charles - i think it's my mistake - it's a 2000/01 car so must be a tddi.
thanks for the pointer on the forum

My Megane sometimes doesn't like going into second, whether going up or down. Apart from the fact that its done 85k miles with the obvious possibility of wear in the synchro, does anyone have any ideas on what else might cause it? There doesn't seem to be a lot of gear lever slop, although there is a bit of play (I did buy a couple of bushes to put in the linkage last year but haven't got round to it yet). Read more
'a pretty forthright approach to gearchanging'
Nicely put!
It reminds me of an aunt and uncle of mine. They both had the same approach to gearchanging oddly enough.....spirited revving, followed by a sudden drop of the clutch....then an odd 'grab and shove' action on the gear handle - as if it were red hot and had to be grasped for as short a time as possible....finally a sharp rise in the clutch pedal (there was no notion of 'bite' - it was either up or down!)
As I say, the strange thing was that they both drove in exactly the same way.
They lived in London for many years and I would visit them as a child for holidays from darkest Aberdeenshire. At that age I assumed that this style of driving had something to do with constant city driving - but I was equally aware that my parents adopted a far more leisurely approach - and assumed that the quiet road conditions up here made 'desperate gear changing' unnecessary.
As I grew up and learned to drive myself I came to realise that my aunt and uncle were simply insensitive to machinery of any kind!
The rather sad ending to this story is that my aunt at the age of 84 ended her driving career by driving up the back of a Peugeot 206 with her Metro - coming to rest with both nearside wheels on the roof of the pug and offside wheels still on the road - at a 45 degree angle!
She was unhurt - said the sun had blinded her and couldn't understand what all the fuss was about......!

Couple of interesting news items on VW. Porsche has bought 20% of VW, possibly to protect VW from a takeover bid.
Although denied by VW, it has been reported in the Spanish press that VW may be looking to offload Seat unless profitibility improves- perhaps to a Chinese manufacturer. Read more
Sorry - got tyhe wrong name - Jetta, not Vento - slip of the memory.

My local four branded garages all sell Total.
Just launched this allegedly improved fuel.
I can not say I notice any difference in the performance of diesel VW so far. Not even the claimed anti foam properties on refuelling.
Anyone have anything good to say about Total?

I am one of the servants of THEY ! Beware!
Unless we or other notified bodies certify and test equipment for use in a hazardous atmosphere it should not be used. I do not install the equipment, but do the certification to international Standards, through our well known firm.No advert but we are hosting an IECEx conference in Buxton next week.See IECEx website if interested.Or read the certification label on many fuel pumps.
A shorted lithium phone battery ,after dropping it say, produces a spectacular bang and a fire. Much more likely scenario than using a phone IMHO.

I am buying an 04-reg citroen c2 today, and was wondering what the situation is when you buy a used car that is this young. will it still have a citroen warranty? Read more
Well the guide I have says service is 20,000 miles, and it hasn't done that many yet. If all is in order, I presume there will be info with the manual/service book?
I had an expensive experience yesterday had my car in for full service and mot and it failed on the o/s/r brake caliper had seized not due to corrosion . The garage i used advised it was down to a component failure inside ! They were quite amazed as they seem to think a part like this should have lasted a lot longer . It's quite ironic as they offered one of two options for replacement to replace with genuine nissan caliper at £186 not even in stock ( According to the dealer they never have to replace them which I find very hard to believe , which is why not stock item ) Or a non genuine one a brand called Blueprint at cost of £130 (two year warranty) Which one do you think I choose ? . I just wonder if nissan being part of renault is affecting nissan's longstanding reliablity what do you think ? Read more
PS - you also have to remember that the back brakes do very little work, and if you brake gently they they aren't getting much use. Often the pads last for ages and the discs start to corrode. Occasional high speed heavy braking will keep them free and keep the discs shiny.

Cheers, will get the Haynes out and have a lash.
