Hi, i wonder whether anyone can help? I usually only play with VW air cooled engines , but got roped into swapping a diesel watercooled for a friend. The engine is in, it starts and ticks over, but the moment I move the throttle cable it dies. Any idea's would be much appreciated. Thanks. Read more

I presume you mean when you increase the revs?, if so it could be:
timing out of sync( but would normally not start)- has this been meddled with?
inj pump problem -not delivering sufficient fuel-again do not meddle with normally.
nothing sily is it, like air locks(bubbles in fuel pipe), or leaking injectors or badly fitting leak-off pipes?
There's some ideas for now

Coming home tonight, I am at the head of a small queue of cars in a narrow side road, waiting to turn left into very busy and nose to tail main road.

I have just reached the threshold of the junction when a big black and debadged BMW 5-series comes up on my outside and with a good proportion of his car over the centre line of the narrow road. I assume he wants to turn right -- but oh no, he butts his way into the line of cars and turn left, cutting me up.

He then continues to barge his way through the traffic, overtaking through the zigzags on a Pelican crossing and generally being a bully. Three men in the car; large, white and with shaven heads. But they don't act like policemen.....

Why do we bother being polite and paying our taxes when the Govermnent does nothing about these people who make our lives a misery?

Sorry for the rant - I'm just annoyed as this is the fourth or fifth time I have experienced this type of behaviour in the last couple of weeks.

"I don't know why I bother"

You bother because you are a civilising influence. Your adherence to the rules is quietly (and unknowingly, perhaps) acknowledged by the 999 in 1000 who are like you, who appreciate that rules make the world run a little better.

The Buddha says that we should accept the world as it is, not as we would wish it to be. The driver you saw will probably always behave the way he did. That's the way the world is, so it needs accepting.

Once you've accepted that this is the way the world is, you'll find your anger levels go down about these incidents: why would you get agitated about seeing just what you expect to see?

Finally, what will happen to him in the long run? Well, if the Buddha is right, it looks like he's in for a few lifetimes of suffering before achieving enlightenment. That'll learn him.

Question Peugeot 106
Inveravon

On my way back from work today my K reg Peugeot 106 started making a screeching sound as I went to change gear, especially when I was changing at a higher speed, e.g. 3rd to 4th/4th to 5th. Screeching continued when rolling at speed in neutral and then appeared to quiten down (as if something was slowing down while turning) as speed declined.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Get the fan belt sorted out first and go from there. In other words eliminate one problem before moving onto the next. Chances are it's the same problem anyway.

This question has been nagging me for a while.

When the official fuel consumption figures are determined, I assume that they are done 'under laboratory conditions'. I further assume that they are carried indoors, on a rolling road.

Does this mean that the aerodynamic differences between cars counts for nothing, and that is why two different cars will get different figures in the real world, despite having similar offical figures?

Estimates of aerodynamic drag among other corrections are added into the road load that the rolling road simulates - i.e., the rollers aren't free running.

Used to balance wheels but the wheels remain on the car.
DO they find any supporters in the BR and how much do you pay.

Also how often does the tracking need to be checked. Read more

On car balancers are useful when you have a vibration problem that ordinary balancing doesn't cure - especially if you can direct the strobe lamp at any suspect parts such as driveshafts, etc. For ordinary balancing, the off car machines are, however, more accurate and sensitive.

I don't know if there are any service intervals for checking the wheel alignment - there aren't for any of the vehicles I've worked on. It tends to be done when there is a tyre wear problem, or obvious handling deficieny, rather than as a routine task. If you've had the steering and/or suspension apart, or you have hit a pothole or other some such nuisance, then checking the wheel alignment is a good idea.

Hiya. I'd like to address an annoyance in the above car, which showed up during tour of France some while ago. Essentially it seems to need thinking time between pressing the accelerator for a swift overtake & actually doing it. What I was hoping is there a nice quick & cheap fix for this? A known issue?

Don't need anymore power, it's a cab so not much point & besides it's done over 150k.

Any thoughts? It's only a 'would be nicer.' Lived with it for 5 years!

Thank you all for looking at this. Read more

Or put it another way is there a decent Golf forum
out there? I can see loads on Google, but the few
I've delved into aren't very good.

I'm looking for some suggestions on what to buy next year - around September/October time.

The budget will be around £7500. Has to be an auto as that is all I can drive, must have decent air con and needs to be an MPV. Although there is only two adults and 1 child we really struggled with our luggage fitting in the boot of the Scenic this year, we will be joined by more children next year!

I am favouring the Toyota Previa at the moment - very keen on the sliding rear doors and have heard great things about reliability and ability to do many miles.

Would love some suggestions as I like to really research things before I buy.

TIA

Kia Sedona has a strange seating arrangement and can only seat six with all the seats in place leaving no room for luggage. A standard MPV can seat six and have one seat removed for luggage (as we do in our Trajet).

I am returning my Scenic bought on the selections scheme and am currently waiting for them to come and collect it.

My tax disc expires at midnight on Friday and the car is due it's first MOT on the 15th October which I obviously won't be doing as I won't have the car by then.

I assume all I need to do is declare SORN and keep the car on the driveway to be compliant with the new regulations?

TIA

If you are the Registered Keeper Claire then yes if you are not going to use the vehicle on a public road from 0001 hrs 1.10 then declare SORN. Also notify that you are no longer the Regd Keeper when the car finally departs your home.

What the best car shampoo on the market?

Everytime I wash my car its left with loads of marks/smugges. I seen on TV once a car shampoo that after you washed your car left some sort of 'magic' shine to it.When water was poured on it just ran off leaving it as new. Is there a product out there that really is this good or is it old tripe?

I'm still using the stuff I bought from Asda quite some time ago.

And yes, I'm still on that same 5 litre container of the stuff. Last I recall, there's still approx a litre of it left.

Hi,

I have recently bought a BMW 1 series 1.6 Sport. The fuel consumption is rubbish about 28.8 mpg. Are there any tips to stretch this out.

Thanks in advance Read more

Red Baron

That is a small high-revving engine in a heavy car, not dissimilar to my Alfa (1.6). In variable conditions/traffic I can easily get as low as 32mpg, but a steady drive will get that up to 40 sometimes.

The real killer for mpg at 'normal' speeds is the frequency of throttle inputs. A steady 75 is much better than lots of fast slow between 30 and 50.
