Just read the motoring bulleting from DT and there is a complaint from someone whose top-box came open at 70mph!

The instructions which came with mine say you should not exceed 60mph with it fitted (although many do) perhaps HJ should point this out.

Ours is only ever fitted when needed, how many others leave them on all the time?

And not realise that their fuel economy suffers from doing so?

Saw a BMW the other day doing 90 with a large sheet of plywood tied to his roof rack. Kept my distance and am astonished it didn't all end in tears.

We would always throw a 1" strap round the topbox before a motorway run - belt 'n' braces and all that. Touch wood, never had a problem yet....

Over on thr Isle of Wight during peak holiday season it seems as though every 5th car had a roof box. Probably nowhere to store them whilst on holiday.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

Is it true they're designed to go "blunt end" first and everyone is using them back to front?

I saw one facing backwards the other day, and it started me wondering too.............

If they are then all the pictures shown on google images are all around the wrong way.

I think maybe this was the case. I have seen them blunt end first, but assumed this was incorrect, as the airflow would be spoilt at the back, adding to air resistance.

Maybe manufacturers are designing them the other way round now to limit lift, which can lead to instability at high speed.

Really begs the question as to why most people feel the need to by a roofbox. I never have, even for skis.

I can fit more stuff into the boot of my Alfa than most people will get into the boot of a Mondeo. Many people have no idea how to pack efficiently.

For the missus surely. She?d freeze on the roof rack.

They are a God send for Families.

Or perhaps I'm one of those people (with a mondeo) and a roof box that you think can't pack properly.

Of course, you're welcome to try and it fit a pram, two suitcases, cot bed and the rest of the holiday baggage into your Alfa's boot.

Or indeed into my Mondeos.

Good luck!

Essential for skiis if you are carrying passengers and luggage surely? I can get my 180cm carvers in the rear of the Passat estate but it is still a bit tight.

Thats a posh picnic, most of us carry canvas folding chairs

That's certainly why I bought mine. Had all the stuff mentioned above (cots, pushchairs etc) together with as much fishing tackle as I could smuggle into the car without SWMBO seeing.

It didn;t do my fuel consumption any favours though, but much more practical than a trailer.

This year my roofbox will contain 8 pairs of skis and the car will have 5 adults on board. My friend's Grand Cherokee will have 5 more people on board (two will be hiring).

Try doing that without a roofbox.

As for hiring skis when I get there, no chance. My Rossignol Zenith's are my babies and they're coming with me!
