I have been searching for the thread about the oil for my Honda Accord diesel, and can only assume it disappeared to that thread heaven last week-end.

Someone replied to say, if I recall correctly, there were only "two" manufacturers of 0w-30 motor oil. Could he, or anyone else, let me know the brands, please? Read more

Is it an EU4 diesel?

If so, wouldn't it need a low ash oil like Mobil 1 ESP (Emission System Protection) or Castrol Edge (Edge is the new name for SLX) Turbo Diesel?

Have a 1.1 93 cfi/cat fiesta with worn bores / rocker gear. Have picked up a BRAND NEW 1ltr engine, beleave 89 dist less but with mech fuel pump take off. Can plate fuel pump hole. The bore is the same and from part Nos top half the same.
???? If i take crank and pistons from 1.1 fit the new rings from the 1ltr changing stroke =s half decent 1.1ltr engine???
IS MY THINKING RIGHT? ANY PROBLEMS?

Yup, both engines have the same bore, so just put the new rings on the old pistons. Head is the same, so just swap. Valve timing is the same on both also.

I would say you have yourself a pretty easy fix there :-)

beleave 89 dist less

Only one 1.0 litre was made, and is was HCS. Engine code TLB.

Our regular monthly trip to visit relatives takes us clockwise round the top half of the M25 on a Friday evening, always a pleasant motoring experience.
Last Friday I chose a perfectly adequate gap to move into the outside lane and accelerated briskly to the same speed as the car which had just overtaken us.
The nice young man in the Corsa behind, closed the gap and was considerate enough to enable my wife to read the paper by driving with full beam about three feet from my rear bumper.
When the opportunity came to return to the centre and then the inside lane, the nice man in the Corsa waved cheerfully as he passed and was trying to tell me that I had one and then two rear lights out. I checked later and found he was mistaken but it is an easy mistake to make. He was very closely followed by his friend in a Golf and they must have been en route to an emergency as they raced ahead very quickly and each seemed to be trying to get to their destination first.
Ten miles or so further on the traffic came to a halt and when it started moving, imagine our dismay to find that the cause of the hold up was our newly found young friends. The Corsa and the Golf had come into contact with each other, the central reservation or both.
Thankfully the drivers did not appear to be hurt but we were very concerned that this would have delayed thier journey not to mention increased insurance premiums.
We were very sympathetic and hope that we lifted thier gloom somewhat with a cheer and a wave as we passed. Read more

Your story reminds me of last "Summer"

We were up in Scotland near Perth and on our way to Dunkeld in the Discovery, which was the only type of vehicle anyone would want to be driving in these conditions. It was the same day the A9 was buried under a mudslide!

As we were travelling between one massive flood and the next, we came accross a queue of 5 vehicles with drivers assessing the risk of going through the flood. We simply passed them slowly and drove with the diff lock though the flood and out the other side.

As we were some 3/4 of the way through, a small merc C class came at around 40 to 50mph around the blind corner that swept around into the water......

We never worked out whether its brakes or the 18 inches of water actually stopped the car. I suspect it was the latter.

When we were coming back a few hours later we saw the same car parked by the roadside in the same area. I suspect the water did nothing to improve the electronics under the bonnet. Oh how we laughed!

No. You're barking totally up the wrong tree this time - hence why I've removed your suggestions.

I've been reading the info over on the bangernomics site about the problems with early Polo and Golf breather systems bangernomics.tripod.com/oilypolo.htm and unfortunately my 1990 1.3 litre Golf seems to be showing all the symptoms.

First of all just to clarify something from that article is an oil separator the same part as the crankcase breather or is it attached to it? I'm trying to figure it out but there's no reference to that in my Haynes manual.

Anyway, I've got traces of oil that have come up through the crankcase breather hose into the air filter and I also have black smoke coming from the exhaust. On the bangernomics site it's said to be a pig of a job to replace the crankcase breather so is this a job I should bring the car to a garage to do?

I'm a bit concerned at this point that the seals around the pistons might have had their day. Particularly bacause the car seems to lack power. It's hard to tell at this point as the exhaust is also blowing a bit and I need to do have a few other things like the carb and plugs looked at just to narrow it down.

It was generically called a Crypton tune, from the name of the equipment used. When I used to do mobile tuning I had an Allen Sequential Engine Analyser in the back of the van which did the same job.A compression test was the first thing done to see if the engine was in good condition for tuning.Such equipment probably does not see much use these days but I am sure some garages will still have it gathering dust somewhere.

Driving through France recently and every time a biker passed he put his right foot out as if to say merci for letting him past. Is this a true reading of this gesture? Is it peculiar to french bikers? Or are they avoiding DVT? Read more

Forum 306 Diesel

thinking of buying a 98-99 Peugeot 306 Diesel and wondered if any of you have experience of ownership. Is it worthwhile and what are the running costs (service etc) compared to a petrol version. I've had a look at what HJ says I should look out for, but as there are literally hundreds out there for sale, what should I be looking for.

Are there any 'better' alternatives?

All advice appreciated. Read more

"DONT BUY THE PUG!
I had one before my Focus, and if it could go wrong it did. They dont like mileage, and all repairs cost a fortune because it is so badly designed under the bonnet.
If you really fancy a 306, get a petrol powered one - much cheaper to run."

Your talking a load of cobblers.

The PSA (Pug/Citroen) based diesel engines are renown for thier reliabilty and performance. I had a ZX with 163k and my son has a 306 with 110k, just renewed the cam belt when due and regular servicing.

But beware as some reports say the 97/98 engines were proun
to throughing a rod through the side. But the early engines up to 97 had no problems.

So if you want a late model I'd go for a HDI version. And most of all, the diesels will not loose much in value compared to petrol models.

Hi all,

Well, I've been looking around for a while now, and wanted to get some ideas from those with knowledge about cars - as I have very little (other than watching Top Gear, which only teaches me the art of cynicism!)

Anyway, I'm looking to upgrade my 1.1 Saxo as I've had it 5 years now, and feel I need something with a bit more power.

So, heres what I'm after:

To give you an idea for insurance, I'm a 23 year old male with 3 points (traffic jams!)

Budget: 6-7k

Driving type: 20k miles a year, mainly commuting to work which is a mix of country lanes and motorway. Motorway tends to irritate me in the saxo as I get stuck in the inside lane so something with some acceleration would be a bonus.

What I'm after:

Acceleration

Fuel Economy

Cheap to insure (under £700 is the preference)

Fun to drive

I'm looking to keep this for a few years, so realistically, something with low mileage would be a preference.

I did look at a Bora 1.8 130 PD, but in all honesty, I fear if I get that, I may kill myself pretty quickly! So, recently I've been looking at Civic 1.6 VTEC SE Sport, Leon 1.6 and the Focus 1.6. I've not test driven any of those yet - thats this weekends task.

But, I was wondering what you guys would recommend. Am I on the right path, or miles off?

Citroënian {P}

With the mileage you're looking at and the need for some decent acceleration, I'd go with the diesel bandwagon. Any VAG with the TDi (PD)engine (Fabia, Polo, Bora, Ibiza, etc) should give both performance and economy. The extra torque of a diesel makes driving relaxed and has all the oophm when you need it 50-80. You don't notice hills any more either.

The Peugeot/Citroen HDi engine is also good, with the same benefits.

Good luck!

A friend is away on holiday and has left her QX on my drive to have a look at; I have noticed a number of faults:

I) Air-bag light flashes- what is the likely cause of this?

ii) Poor running- she complains the car occasionally feels sluggish. I just tried to start the car and it cut out each time unless I opened the throttle to make it rev a little. Once running the car settled into a reasonable, idle at an indicated 600rpm. There is no engine warning light illuminated. I thought I would take the car to the local dealer, but unfortunately they cannot plug it in to their diagnostic machine until after she leaves.

Will a diagnostic machine display faults if the engine light is not illuminated, and what is the most likely cause of her troubles, I would guess lambda probe? I am unsure whether to recommend she take the car to her local main dealer to be plugged in.

Thanks.

Thanks for the response Aprilia, i have just seen your post. I have just come off the phone after my friend called with a few more probs. I'll follow your advice as above, and look through the notes from the last MOT and let the forum know how i get on.

Next week I shall have the oil changed in our Leon Cupra (02 plate with the AUQ engine) by our local Nissan dealership. They inform me they do not have any synthetic oil, so I will have to provide my own. Fair enough- but what is the optimum viscosity classification for this engine, 5w-30 or 5w-40?

Thanks.
