Having a few minor probs. with various things as follows: -
Heating - Sometimes the heater will only blow very hot or very cold with nothing in between.
Dash info displys - mileage, temp etc. displays sometimes seem to switch off for a split second. Usually everything is Ok after this happens but a couple of times it has reset everything.
Boot lock - sometimes pops open when stopped a traffic lights etc. Very annoying.
The car will be going in for its 37500 service shortly, but as the problems are intermittent, I have a feeling they won't find anything wrong.
Has anyone experienced similar?

Just got the car back from its service.
Heating - They have 'recalibrated' the heating controls. All seems fine at the moment.
Instrument Displays - to be replaceced under warranty.
Boot Lock - New Latch and Switch to be fitted under warranty.
Hi all,
The weather is looking good finally after a week of horrible weather.
Why does it always rain on weekends and bank holidays?
Well anyway heres my question to you all
Im thinking of purchasing an Audi A6 2.5tdi Quattro 140bhp 6 speed. It is a 1997 P reg, saloon,
The asking price is £4000 froma private seller. Its got 131000 miles with full Audi service history. Is this asking price reasonable? (the car does have full leather, climate control, air con, alloys etc)
Also what sort of mileages can these cars realistically run to?
What do I need to watch out on this car
Also never had an AUdi Quattro before so what do i need to watch/listen out for?
Does the quattro system need regular servicing or anything of the like?
ALso whats "real life" fuel consuption like.
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all. Read more
Ok this is getting silly.
audi80tdi - come up with a reasonable explanation of what is going on with the fleet of Audis that you and your friend own, or go away.
If you don't, I'll choose for you.
Hi. Another tyre wear question.
I noticed that the nearside front tyre has worn pretty evenly, though the offside front tyre has worn more on the inside than the outside. Is this tracking related? I always thought tracking would give uneven wear on both tyres?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks chaps for your replies.
Took it to Kwik-fit this morning for new tyres and tracking. Steering seems a lot lighter now but I think that's the new tyres not yet bed in.
The tracking was adjusted by 3mm. Is this a lot? They've called me back in 30 days for re-adjustment.

I'm having a problem in a Mk3 97 GTI 2.0 Golf whereby the last 3 times I have made a journey in the car the engine dies after about 10 minutes from it's initial start.
It's only 10mins after the initial start that this occurs and after anything from 10 secs to 10 mins after cut out, the ignition key will start the engine again after a retry.
In fact the 2nd time this occurred I topped up the oil thinking that was the issue then preceded to drive from Scotland to London with no further issue only for the same problem to reoccur the day after 10mins or so after driving from cold.
Not knowing a great deal about cars, initially I thought it was oil related as the oil light came on when the car engine died but this may just be a red herring.
Any ideas? I'd like to have a feel for people's thoughts (especially if there's something I can check) so the garage doesn't fleece me!

I would bet a week's wages that its a relay going south....
Is their an source of information about which car parts are common across makes and models? I'm particularly interested in brake parts, as I'm wanting to eBay some parts I don't need, and it'll be handy to know what range of cars they will fit apart from the one I bought them for.
A good example is when I needed new front caliper for my Megane which I found out was the same as on a 205 GTi, which I had a spare one of.

GSF didn't know about the brake calipers being common parts, as they said they didn't stock a Megane caliper when I asked for one; but did stock the identical 205 GTi one.
Anyone know of any good scenic roads to drive outside N london - 50-75 mile radius ? Also is it best to book hire cars in advance or leave it to the last minute ?
thanks Read more
Forgot to answer part 2:
Most hire car firms don't seem to charge different rates depending on when you book. Booking later might mean they don't have the car in stock that you want, so you might get an upgrade (or knowing my luck, a downgrade).
Better prices can be had via websites than booking in person.
Hi,
Recently (Sunday) bought a 406 estate.
Fine except for a couple of faults. Firstly, the high-level brake light does not work, and it had been covered with a strip of black sticky tape by the previous owner - presumably some sort of MOT evasion measure! I can't work out how to get into it - does anyone know? The owners handbook shows how to replace bulbs (5 x 5w) for the saloon model, but my estate doesn't have the same removable cover inside the car.
Also, the radio reception is terrible - completely unlistenable on any channel. I unscrewed the roof mounted aerial and noted that the already lousy reception did not actually deteriorate when it was unscrewed. This leads me to believe that the connection from the aerial to the radio has failed, but I cannot work out how to remove the aerial base from the roof - does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Don't know about the brake light, but my first thought about the aerial, is that it's not plugged into the head unit. Even if the aerial base has failed, you should get some reception from the wire going through the bodywork.
Having just bought a top condition ultra low mileage 94 BMW e30 tourer with a great service history.I was hit in a no fault accident and the repair bill looks like it's around £3k from the local BMW dealers. Does anybody know if I can ensure it's repaired rather than written off as it's taken me six months to find this car. I don't see why I should have to lose it just because of someone elses stupidity.Furthermore I'd just bought it and was driving it home at the time, it was comprehensively insured. Read more
What if its a Mondeo thats a bit rare and has
sentimental value? ;)
Nope in their eyes it's just another old mondeo.
My son has been offered the chance to buy a VW Polo 1.6CL T-reg 1999 21,000 miles 5 door hatchback with FSH. next service due end August. MOT expires mid-June. New front tyres fitted at last service. VGC. one lady owner.Price £3,750 (possibly £3,500)
This will be his first car (aged 25) and he is not flush with money! I have read very mixed reviews on the Polo
1. Is this a good car to go for?
2. Is the price reasonable?
3. What should he be aware of - good and bad points?
4. Lastly - I'm concerned about the change of tyres at last service which was probably at about 15k miles. Is this common? - and is this likely to be an ongoing and frequent expense?
5. Are there any really good reliable 2nd hand car makes for around £4k - £5k anyone can recommend eg a Ford focus / Mazda 323F.
Thanks Read more
Many thanks for your helpful reply. I had thought the polo was overpriced and I was also concerned about some poor reports I have read.
Do you know anything about Mazda 323F 1.6 1998 S Reg 50k miles with brand new clutch, 12 months MOT 3 months warranty price £2,100
also a Ford Focus W reg £4650 - sorry I have no more info on this until tomorrow. Both are from a small local garage saleroom owned by an elderly chap who has a very good reputation for being trustworthy.
Again thanks for your help!

But "coupe" (can't do acute accents) means "cut". I've always assumed that meant a car with a lower roof line, to look and possible be, less air resistant and therefore faster.
I agree about them generally having only two doors. That's another indication that passenger convenience has been sacrificed for sportier, sleeker looks.
