Escort tyre wear: even NSF, uneven OSF - mfarrow
Hi. Another tyre wear question.

I noticed that the nearside front tyre has worn pretty evenly, though the offside front tyre has worn more on the inside than the outside. Is this tracking related? I always thought tracking would give uneven wear on both tyres?

Thanks in advance.

Could well be.

Not necessarily. I've had tyres that have only worn on one side of the front of the car and it was the tracking that was the cause.

It's likely to be the tracking - doesn't always wear both tyres. Wear on the inside of the tyre means it is running too much toe out. I would just give the track rod on the affected side 1 turn in the appropriate direction (this depends on whether the track rod is situated at in front or behind the wheel - in front then shorten the track rod to reduce the toe out, behind, lengthen the track rod), and see what happens. If you get it right the tyre will stop looking feathered on the edge pretty soon (like 50 miles).

Could also just be that you live somewhere with lots of roundabouts and you like going round them enthusiastically!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Sorry I should have said, the split of wear across both tyres seems uniform, it's just the wear to the offside one that's uneven. Maybe an illustration with indicated thread depths (in mm):

OK that didn't come out very well...

Basically

nearside inside depth: 2mm
nearside outside depth: 2mm
offside inside depth: <1mm
offside inside depth: 3mm

Which is exactly the pattern of wear caused by poor tracking. The wheel is not going straight forwards, but is getting dragged sideways as well. If it's pointing too far out (toeing out), the inside edge wears (as yours), if it's pointing too far in (toe in), the outside wears. Typically ther wear is only the first inch or so across the tyre.

BTW if the tyres are down to 2mm, you really ought to be replacing them anyway!

I've edited it. Best I could manage as short of time right now. DD.

Thanks chaps for your replies.

Took it to Kwik-fit this morning for new tyres and tracking. Steering seems a lot lighter now but I think that's the new tyres not yet bed in.

The tracking was adjusted by 3mm. Is this a lot? They've called me back in 30 days for re-adjustment.
