My 1998 v6 Mondeo has developed a nasty smell when switched on (not all the time though). The nearest thing i can describe what it is like is a burning clutch or binding brakes.
It's still getting as cold as it should be so it's working ok ,also i've had a good sniff under the bonnet and can't smell it there so haven't a clue what it could be?
Any idea? TIA.

I want a nice Sunday car for comfy motoring. Have gone off the jeep cherokee and am now looking at a clean 97 MB S280. Service history and seems genuine. Is it okay at £4K? Cheers Read more
Do it! I did the same thing a few years ago with the same trepidation. I'm on #2 now and provided you keep out of MB dealers costs have been no worse than prevous makes. I've enjoyed the cars.
I have a slight problem with my '02 Mondeo TDCi Ghia X, when the aircon or climate are switched on and I am sitting in traffic or travelling slowly I can hear a cooling fan come on for a second and then switch off again, on again, off again etc etc, although the aircon etc seems to work OK the fans never previously did this, the dealer diagnosed low gas pressure though topping up did not cure it, they are now saying it is the "low speed fan" that is cutting in and out though the "high speed fan" is ok, they need to have the car back in to run diagnostics to determine the cause, anyone have any ideas?
Also can anyone advise as to under what conditions these respective fans are supoosed to opperate?
Many thanks. Read more
Update, replacing the plug with spade connectors did not solve the high speed fan cycling problem however I have now changed the resistor myself at a cost of £25 and all seems fine.
Regards.
I have a leak on both power steering alloy pipe sections. The low pressure side I have managed to fix. The problem is the high pressure side. I was going to use a compression fitting from a plumbers merchants but the pipe is 12MM in diameter which is an awkward size to get hold of. Has anybody got any solutions to this problem.
Many thanks.

If that's no good, try hydraulic repairers, such as those that repair fork-lifts and plant machinery. I have had a hose and unions made by one once for a fraction of the LandRover part price.
Just purchased a year old 1200cc 16v corsa sxi.Car performs excellent, just one niggle,in the morning, and only then the clutch seems a bit juddery.Any other corsa drivers have this problem? Read more

About to buy a new car. The salesman was desperate to sell me GAP insurance (at about £400). This apparently covers the difference betweeen the initial cost of the car during the first three years (if a total wreck) and what my insurance company would pay out. The thing that bothers me is that, according to the salesman, even if the car is a total write off during the first year, my insurance company would not replace the car but only the value of the car less VAT. My insurance policy states quite clearly that the car would be replaced if written off during the first year. Has anyone experience of this situation and/or is it yet another dealer try on?
He also tried to sell me a special paint treatment at £295 which I refused! Read more
Worth it on a second hand car. I bought an
S-reg Xsara two years ago and the GAP cover I bought
separately would have refunded me the difference between what my >> insurer paid out and the purchase price of the car if I
wrote it off within two years.
But not worth it in your case David - you didn't write it off, so it was just money down the drain.
Brought my love Corolla for MOT and passed but was advised that nearside rear tyre has a nail in it. Went home and replace it with spare. There really is a nail on the tyre but has yet removed it as the tyre would then probably gone. Now, should I get it replaced or it's possible to hang around in the boot for 'emergency' use? Thet is right but all will refuse as it is illegal.
Driving to an MB dealer 20miles away to have the brake fluid changed (half the price of my local one) I noticed cruise control wouldn't work on the motorway - or indeed above 55mph. I asked the dealer to check it over and they said this was due to the wrong tyres being fitted (205 55's on 16 inch rims) - these are the standard MB wheels and the tyres were fitted by an MB dealer! Before I take this up with Mercedes could anyone give me a guide as to what the problem may be - is there a sensor perhaps that's been left off? Read more
They need to be the same *rolling diameter*, to within a couple of percent.
From reading their site it looks as though their blue membership at £30 would let me view and bid online on their auctions.
I am looking for a Mondeo Estate 2.0 around £4k and they do not turn up at my local auction.
Anyone know how does their online bidding work.

I am a bit baffled by the current pricing situation. I wanted new pads and discs fitted to my current Mondeo and telephoned a number of local dealers in order to get quotes. The service department at Ford dealer one quoted £175 the rapid fit facility at the same dealership stated they could do the job for £155.
I was very surprised at this mismatch so I telephoned dealer number two which is part of the same dealer group as dealer one and only located a few miles away. The service department quoted £231, yes £231!!! The rapid fit department quoted £165.
I then selected a dealer not connected with the other two and got very different prices yet again. Rapid fit £140 and service dept £170. In the end I went for the cheapest price.
It seems mind-boggling that two dealers part of the same group located only a few miles from each other would have different prices. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive quotes seems a staggering amount. I am curious as to if anyone else has experienced this?

Chris, I was under the impression that the online service booking was withdrawn from the Ford website.
>>
When the online booking facility was available I got a quote from my local dealer and then trawled around the site for other quotes, 1 to try to save money and 2 out of interest.
My local dealer appears to be the most expensive I could find.
I, having the time travel, choose a 50 mile drive to Chichester for what I consider excellent service. This saved £75 on a Focus service less the cost of fuel and lunch.
The servicing cost that I sampled were very similar all over the country. The cost at other branches of my local dealer were cheaper.

Last one I came across, Ford footed 50%.
