Following enthusiastic driving, with high engine speed, the temperature guage on my X type rapidy rose until the red light was illuminated, I stopped and was rescued by the AA. They told me that a cooling system hose had come off and the cooling system had drained very quickly. The hose was connected by both a spring clip and a jubilee clip, suggesting to me that Jaguar are not confident of the security of this hose. My Jaguar dealer confirmed that this arrangement is correct. Does anyone know if there is a design fault and/or a known problem with the cooling system on the 2.5 litre petrol version of the x type? Also does anyone know if this system has a relief valve? if not should it have relief valve? Is the coolant pump engine driven? If anyone can help me I would be grateful, as I am keen to have an informed discussion with Jaguar about this. Thank you. Read more

"Does anyone know if there is a design fault and/or a known problem with the cooling system on the 2.5 litre petrol version of the x type?"

Sorry, can't answer that.

" Also does anyone know if this system has a relief valve? if not should it have relief valve?"

Yes it will have a 'relief' valve - radiator cap. Probably set a 1 barg, which is equivalent to about 130°C boiling point of the coolant.

" Is the coolant pump engine driven? "

Without a doubt. The coolant pump should not be able to make sufficient pressure in the system to open the radiator cap.

The hose should definitely not pop off, but the belt and braces securing suggests there might have been a problem during testing...

Most car makes seem to be represented on this forum but we don't hear much about Fiats. SWMBO is pestering me about changing her old Toyota, so far we have narrowed the choice down to another Toyota, maybe a Yaris, or a Renault Modus (my favorite), or a Panda 4x4. No she doesn't need a 4x4 but we won't go there. I value my hair colour and sanity.

Years ago we had a new Fiat 131 Mirafiori and is was awful. But I am sure Fiats are fine nowadays. What are the new Fiats like and in particular the Panda? Seems well written up to me and terrific value. Read more

Funny enough, I've been driving round in a Sciento all week
for a delivery job I'm doing. No idea what size engine
it's got and it is only a base model, wind up
windows etc but it is quite a pleasant little car to
nip about in.
Subject to knowing what long term reliability is like I would
happily own one if I wanted a baby hatch. It is
a 51 reg, no rattles or squeaks and a the engine
is nice and quiet. I should think it is well above
average mileage.

51 plate might be post the 2000 update, which put the 1108 "FIRE" engine in all versions.

Has anyone had trouble unlocking their car with the remote key fob? The other evening I could not open my Toyota RAV4, had to call the RAC, the driver who came said that there is a problem with RAV4s. He opened the car by the key and set off the alarm, but when the engine was started the alarm did not start after it had reset. On his advice I took the car to the main agent, who said after one hour of tests (for which they charged nothing) that there is nothing wrong. There has been some talk of phone mast signals causing this sort of problem, has anyone else had similar problems? Read more

fob?

Yes, discussed here before if you have a look with the Forum Search, and yes you are likely on the right lines.

There are three bays at my local supermarket where the remote control on my previous car wouldn't work if I parked there. They are in close proximity to a cell phone array, FM transmitter, emergency services transmitter, and large metal walled building, the combination of any of which is likely to be the cause.

Just had my renewal from Direct Line. It's £76 more expensive than the quote I got online when I bought my new car a few weeks ago. They're also advertising intrest free monthly payments. When I rung up to challenge it, I got the usual 'for new customers only'. Well, I am now an 'old' customer as will my wife next month when she renews her insurance.
Eventually got an excellent policy through What Car Ins. It worked out substantially cheaper, even with monthly payments taken into account.
Can't understand why companies treat existing customers with such contempt. Read more

I feel really disappointed about all this.

Every year I routinely check how much I can save on my London Victoria/Frizzell insurance, boosted by CSMA membership, and every year find out that they are cheaper than everyone else by a good chunk.

So this year I didn't bother to check, just renewed. Thought better of it and spent an evening checking and still couldn't get within £50 of their price.

Creates a certain brand loyalty.

Hi.

A Friend of mine has taken her Corsa (Old Shape) to Vauxhall this morning because it's sluggish and they've told her it needs an SPS Update among other things. Can anyone shed some light on what this is? as they want a small fortune for it and nobody knows what it is.

Cheers Read more

Is a software update is required, then this should not be too expensive. What other work is being done, and how much are they asking for? A year and engine size, (Including code if possible.) would also be usefull.

We all know that excessive low mileage on a car can be a bad thing - short trips so engine never warms up etc - but what is the minimum mileage per year you can get away with without causing future problems?

I currently do 6000 a year which although low I guess is just enough to keep my engine happy (comprised of roughly 20 miles a day over six days a week)Any ideas? Read more

Apart from a lot of trouble and expense what has your
3-5 times a year oil/filter change on your mother's low mileage
car achieved?

>>
She doesn't garage the car at all and leaves it parked up on the driveway where it suffers from the extremes in weather throughout the year. Thus the engine gets a lot of cold starts and very short journeys (running on choke most of the time) and rarely hots up - OK with the current warmer weather its slightly better, but inreality the car runs cold from journey to journey.
If they are in the service book with ancillary reciepts(sic) it
must have cost a real lot of money and been difficult
to record.

>>
Why would it be expensive? It costs about £25 for a change each time (original filter) and the reciept just goes in the car wallet. What has it ahceived? Well since the car doesn't suffer from any mayo or other engine related issues, the car runs quite well.

I am in the lucky position off putting in an order for the forthcoming AMV8 Vantage 3 years ago (when the car was first mentioned in the press).

The car is due in the autumn and due to house committments I am going to sell it straight away.

I have never done this before so any top-tips, pitfalls and advice on how much to ask extra would be gratefully appreciated.

Also, I have to spec the car. Do any of you know this market and can give some advice on the most popular colour. I have been told black with black.

The car will be one of the very first to be made (One of the first 15 cars). Read more

Insert Rushall, and then I am invited in input the name of the street. What I am offered is every street in Norfolk. Type in 'The Street', and there are a good dozen available streets.

No cheating by using royalmail.com to find out the postcode.

I think you meant to say that you bought the full retail version of Tom Tom Mobile, but someone stole the original Tom Tom GPS receiver so you had to replace it with a £60 BT GPS receiver. 8-)

Hi gang - just bought one of those super duper microfibre cloths tjust to give it a try. Super! Great at removing all sorts of marks from hard surfaces and terrific on the car. Removed my sons' sticky finger marks from the windows and the 'film' which always seems to coat the inside of the windscreen and removing smears etc. from the dashboard etc. Haven't tried it on the exterior as I haven't washed it for a while but I'm sure it's going to be great - we suffer from hard water and unless the car is properly dried after washing any remaining droplets leave an annoying limescale residue. The best thing is it'll remove grease, oil etc. and there's no need for chemicals etc. Cheap as chips at Aldi too.

So far, thoroughly recommended then. Read more

Hi all! My Ford Ka needs 2 new front tyres very soon including the tracking that needs looking at. The originals are believed to be Continental Eco Contacts, is it advisable to stick to the Continentals or go for a budget brand of tyre?

Ive read somewhere that you should stick to the OE brand because they the best for the design of the vehicle, is this true or is it for advertisment?

If i should go for budget tyres what do i look for in terms of spec & value for money?

Everybodys comments are welcome! :)
