Hi all
I'm just in the process of changing the pads on the front of my mums Rover 414i K reg. All going well until I had to push the cylinder back into the caliper to take up the thickness of the new pads. I unscrewed the brake fluid top, as I squeezed the cylinder with a G clap it pushed in fine but fluid started to leek from around the cylinder seal. To me this means the seal needs replacing before the car can be driven. Just after someone to clarify that for me please. The last thing I want is for my mum to be driving around and the breaks to fail.
thanks in advance

Hello, this is very common on rovers and is nothing to worry about, every rover I have done, and I've done some, have leaked fluid past the seals and has been fine, never had one back. Yes its hard to belive but its a fact.
Cheers.
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to what price to advertise my mothers 1999/T Mk4 Golf 1.4e.
It's got full VW dealer sevice history, is in good condition, 68,450 miles on the clock. Had it's timing belt changed at 60,000 miles, and she had a cd player fitted. Done a search on Autotrader and Parkers with varying results . Would £3750 be acceptable to advertise at and accept £3400?
Thanks in advance.

Cor - a 1.4 Golf Mk4 e. That is one slow basic car!
Mind you, probably very suitable for a young driver being funded by daddy. Lots of style, safe, supposedly reliable (well we know not!) with low insurance.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
I have just put 2 new tyres on my Vectra .
I shoppped around the usual suspects , but also decided to try the web, and found some possibilties .But some price the tyre and then you have to find out the fitting service separately .
However, one , called Event Tyres , quoted the whole deal and were about £20 cheaper than my best conventional place. They came yesterday to my house , did them in about 45 mins and it seems fine.
Plus I was saved the time going to and from a tyre place, which in my experience are unbelievably scruffy .I always hate going to them both because of the surroundings but also because I have a strange sense of feeling guilty that these guys have to earn a living doing this work for me. Read more
Having just checked 2 of the most popular sizes in the market,185/60hr14 and 205/55zr16, the site you mentioned was on average £11.00 more expensive than most independent tyre shops and the latter between £10 to a massive £24.00 a tyre more expensive. I also note that they are quoting runflats which most tyre manufacturers require us to have not only specialist fitting equipment but manufacturer training. Few if any of the major independents are dingy holes in the wall, and if you want to be sure of quality of service then check the following websites. Pirelli for Driver and Performance centres. Goodyear/Dunlop for HiQ centres (Hi Q Tyreservices are more expensive than the independent HiQ centres) Bridgestone/Firestone for the First Stop centres, and soon to be announced the new Michelin star rated accredited centres. All these manufacturers insist on standards of cleanliness and Technical fitting capability way above the norm. I sit on 3 of the management/steering committees and I can assure you that that the standards of membership of these organisations are tough and are getting tougher, we are making it so. Ps Did you get a free alignment check from the mobile, on a perfectly level area.........
Hi,
A family member (It isn't me - honest!) has a Nissan Serena 2.0 petrol with 88k on the clock on an M reg.
On the way back from a service/MOT it just died. Dealer called out to recover & advised that timing chain had gone and further diagnosis was required to see extent of damage - due to happen early next week.
So, a few questions - I know its chain driven, but is it SOHC or DOHC and how many chains are there? Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of how terminal any problems in this area may be? If its going to be megabucks then it might not even be worth fixing as the car is unlikely to be worth more than £1500 even after the repairs.
So chaps - comments if you please.
Thanks ........... Robert Read more
Hi all,
Not exactly sure what the exact details are - but the garage have diagnosed "major" engine failure - with an estimate cost being greater than the value of the vehicle when repaired.
I'll post more when I find out.
Thanks
My old Megane was supplied with a custom fit radio, but there seem to be an almost infinite variety of Philips radios fitted to Renaults that all look identical. Can anyone shed any light on the differences. The reason for asking is that the radio on my 1996 model has packed up (estimate to fix "over £100"). I have been looking for a replacement, but the particular model that was fitted to mine seems as rare as hens teeth. It is a DC379/62B. Not understanding the differences between the various models, I don't know whether an alternative model code would be suitable.
I have an aftermarket model fitted at the moment, but ideally I'd like to hook up an original so that the steering column controls can be used. Read more
Yes, I've got all the mechanics of the swap fixed up, it's just a question as to whether an alternative will work & hook up to the column controls correctly.
What do you think of this off duty policeman doing 159mph and the judge letting him off on the grounds that he was traing himself? I think he just fancied a burst on the banjo. What is the teams opinion? Read more

I'm guessing that you didn't actually read the thread then.
Well I have a civic, with a foxguard alarm pah i dont know who they are and its fitted i have to get it out, but i dont know where all the wires are going to and do not have a wiring diagram, the alarm is a joke and no one has any instructions to it or wiring diagrams, and im finding it impossible to rip out, want to install a Sigma alarm into the car, are there any honda specific wires that anyone knows or the locations to immobilise, or where the foxguard is, as if i unplug the foxguard the engine starts but cuts after 5 secs, so need to sort it somehow but dont know what its stopping, its a pain.
any help would be great
(foxguard to be ripped out of 96 n civic 5 dr hatchback and sigma system to be placed into the car)

My newly acquired 87k mile Volvo S60 is making a clicking noise when turning/cornering to the left. It seems to be speed related. the noise comes from the front underside and a feint vibration can be felt through the steering in time with the clicking.
I initially thought it was a CV joint but after roadtesting and inspecting underneath the car the garage staff cannot decide what it is for definite. They do not want to start replacing parts in an elimination exercise as it could prove expensive for them (small independent dealer).
I have been asked to 'let it develop' and assured that they will fix it once they're sure what's causing the noise.
Any ideas?

Thanks Aprilia. I've had one go on a Mondeo and it was very similar symptoms.
The garage reckon it's 'the wrong type of clicking' to be the CV joint.
I'm gonna take it into my local Volvo independent this week and see if they can diagnose.

My friends 2000 Audi A4 1.8T has started to sound decidedly strange. A strange roughness coming from the top of the engine which makes it sound like a diesel. is there a known problem of oil pump or feeder pipe failure on this engine. Car has not been well serviced and I notice a Motoquip oil filter used. Any ideas welcome! Read more
