My friends 2000 Audi A4 1.8T has started to sound decidedly strange. A strange roughness coming from the top of the engine which makes it sound like a diesel. is there a known problem of oil pump or feeder pipe failure on this engine. Car has not been well serviced and I notice a Motoquip oil filter used. Any ideas welcome!

change the oil and filter 1st,,to see if it makes a difference...use the audi filter,,they are not expensive,,,only £2 more...make sure you use the proper oil as well...normally a good engine,,
if it still rattles after this,,,then you have damaged it... :)

Yes, tried all that including flush. No difference. Audi garage Monday morning. Theoretically the car could be scrapped which would be a great pity but a salutory message about good maintenance principles and not saving pennies to spend pounds. Thanks anyway.

dont scrap it................
just get a recon engine or one from a scrappy,,,you could find a nice a4 engine with 20000 miles on it :) not all cars in there are bad,,,some have been rear end smashes and the scrappy will take the engine out for ya,,,,,
also try www.eurocarparts.com for cheaper than normal oem parts

remember this engine is in the golf audi skoda seat etc
bear that in mind if you look for one
