Nail in tyre - Dumb
Brought my love Corolla for MOT and passed but was advised that nearside rear tyre has a nail in it. Went home and replace it with spare. There really is a nail on the tyre but has yet removed it as the tyre would then probably gone. Now, should I get it replaced or it's possible to hang around in the boot for 'emergency' use?

You should have the tyre repaired or replaced. It is not safe to use even as a spare in an emergency in its current state.

Sound advice IMHO - especially if you carry kids in the car, is it really worth taking the risk and compromising their safety? If it's a 'decent' nail then you might get it puncture repaired at the usual places - but if its a car that SWMBO uses and/or carries the kiddies in, I msyelf would get a new tyre...you cna't put a price on peace of mind sometimes (plus I'd get one hell of a nagging if I did otherwise!) ;)

I'm surprised they passed it. In the 2 instances that I've ever had nails in my tyres during MOT time, the garage failed it on both occasions.

pull the nail out and see if tyre leaks, you might just be lucky.if it leaks and the nail is in the tread width it should be repairable if the tyre is good enough to justify it,or you can pull the nail and put some slime in it which will also prevent any more nail type punctures

I just took thye nail out. It was about 30mmm length and in the middle of the thread. Obviously it's leaking now. Any idea if it's repairable? It's still a very good Michelin. Hope I won't be ripped off when rbing it for repair.

Sorry for all the wrong spelling. I have no chance of correcting them once it's posted.

More info - nail - length 30mm, diamater 3mm. Any chance to get it repaired?

If it's in the middle of the tread, no problem. I would not use a tyre sealant, they are for emergency use only. You have no idea what chemicals are in those things, and it is possible that they may react with whatever is used in the laminating process of the tyre and cause possible failure should the tyre get hot at some stage.

This stuff has been blamed for causing tyre delamination on motorcycles, where sealants are popular because of the lack of a spare.

I had one repaired a few weeks ago, cost £7, surprisingly cheap for the time taken. The big quick fit type places weren't interested, they just wanted to sell a new tyre. You'd do best to try a proper tyres-&-fitting only outfit during the working week when they're not too busy.

information on tyre sealant can be found at www.punctureseal.com the product I use costs slightly less than a puncture repair but it should prevent more punctures in the same tyre.I use oko stop and pay £5.80 per litre.

Ripoff? - not mentioned in the testers manual as a failure item. (provided properly inflated and not a 'cut')

I should point out on the two occasions I've had failed MOT's, they were given at different garages, so I'm assuming a nail in a tyre would be a non pass.

Why not have a tube fitted and the nail hole plugged at a tyre repair centre?

When I got my VW Bora a couple of years ago I was annoyed to find a few days later that there was a nail in the front offside tyre.

I immediately went to a tyre specialist where the tyre was examined, taken off and placed on the tyre removal base. The mechanic then took out the nail only to find, to both our amazement, that it was only a nail head that had stuck in a thread...:-)

Talk about feeling silly. Tyre then put back on and a "No charge" conclusion.

Tubes are no longer approved to be fitted in tubeless tyres and most if not all tyre places will refuse to fit a tube. Regards Peter

Thet is right but all will refuse as it is illegal.

To my surprise I got it repaired for £2 at a local kwik-fit! The chap who did say 'call it a beer'!!
