I want a nice Sunday car for comfy motoring. Have gone off the jeep cherokee and am now looking at a clean 97 MB S280. Service history and seems genuine. Is it okay at £4K? Cheers

As long as it's not Dodi's & Di's.

Price is more than okay and the 2.8 engine is in everything from C-Class's up so it shouldn't be too bad for spares availability.
Against that, the rest of the car is a complex beast but it's not so old that things will be dropping off the car - hopefully.
It may be worth getting a professional inspection done.

Go for it , why not?

Trust your instincts..if you think you can afford running costs and it's as clean as you say.. then go for it. Always fancied one of these myself. Read the car by car breakdown for the S class to your << left << As comparing ot to a Cherokee, well that's a no brainer! What else could you buy for 4k with such oppulence? Bung a cherished dateless plate on it then you've got a 10 grand car!

The price is good if it doesn't need any major work but you should really get it checked by an independent specialist before parting with the cash, repairs can be expensive.
The 280 struggles to haul all that weight so don't expect it to be quick.

Also check that it'll fit into your garage, driveway, parking space etc. They are HUGE!

Nice cars, but just be aware that repairs can be crippling. I had to replace the climate control unit on one last year and the ECU was about £1k - and that's before labour etc.

Amen, Aprilia. That's one reason I ruled out the W140 in a recent quest that resulted in my acquiring one of the last W126 machines to be built -- no A/C, no airbags, no cat, no electric seats -- four major potential repair/replacement-cost black holes. The other reasons were less rational: I've never warmed to its styling and for me it's just a foot too long.

If the a/c doesn't work, or has just been recharged, then it may need an evaporator. It's 24 hours labour plus parts.

Right on Dave! Not long after I changed the climate control ECU the evaporator went! You can imagine how the poor owner felt. About £2.5k spend on the HVAC in three months! Mind you, it had black leather trim and with a big glass area it really does need that aircon.

Do it! I did the same thing a few years ago with the same trepidation. I'm on #2 now and provided you keep out of MB dealers costs have been no worse than prevous makes. I've enjoyed the cars.
