Having a browse through the Rochdale Observer this weekend I read the court pages.

At least 10 people were convicted of driving without tax, insurance, or MOT, yet the maximum fine was 250 quid, with many of just 100 pounds.

What's the maximum fine for no insurance? Mine costs me over 1000 pounds per year yet these little toe-rags get away with it scott free. Read more

Like I said in my post - you'd never know what the Police did with the information, and just because you don't see an immidiate action doesn't mean it's been tossed aside. Furthermore, I refer you to the point of the Police having to act within the Law, namely Criminal Law. If you attend the front desk of your Police Station and report So-and-So as driving with no licence or insurance then the Police will need to catch him driving to then issue him with a producer.

In the absence of a road traffic accident (for which you CAN get a letter in the psot instructing you to produce your documents) or moving traffic offence - there IS NO POWER. What would you have the Police do? Like us, the Police must work within the framework of the Law.

I don't understand why you're so anti? If no power exists, then no power exists - if you don't like the law then lobby your MP to have it changed.

I know it's supposed to be a boring procession & everyone supposedly hates Schumy (not me actually)etc but I wonder how many of us will be tuning-in in the middle of the night to catch the start of another Grand Prix season?

I will be for sure. I won't catch every race but the anticipation and atmosphere from Melbourne takes some beating for a sporting spectacle.

Hello all,

After a recent battery change, the immobiliser wont accept the code to disarm it. My local garage have had it for the past week and are now saying there is nothing else they can do to resolve the problem.
Is there anyone here who has heard of this fault and if so are you able to shed any light on the situation. The car is a 405 gtx estate and is in mint condition. its on an M plate.
Surely there must be a way round this or is it ready for the scrap heap, which is what i've been told.

Thanks in advance.

does anyone gap plugs anymore
the last lot i just thru it in Read more

With a bigger gap more voltage is required from the coil to generate a spark.

So when Fred Bloggs fits new plugs assuming the gap is ok and his car is difficult to start and mis-fires a bit, what does he do? Replaces the battery.....

Pictures of new Leon 'prototype' on Seat UK website. IMO looks fantastic.

On similar thread saw first facelifted C5 last night. What a transformation- car looked superb (but only viewed from front). Read more

Hmmm...essentially an Altea with a lower roofline. Altea is to Leon as Golf Plus is to Golf?

I have a Mazda 626 GXi SE 2.0i estate. It is nearly 3 years old and has developed a loud in-car resonance (low frequency thrum) at an engine speed of 1500 rpm, both on the move and when stopped. It is particularly bad when cold. Also it appears to have a problem on starting from cold deciding whether to go to the cold start speed (1500 rpm) it goes up and down like a yo-yo for a few seconds then goes to 1500 rpm. I am also only getting a very disappointing 26 mpg on average, instead of the quoted 35. It has been to Mazda twice and they claim not to know what's causing all this. The centre and back box were changed in desperation, but made no difference. Independent garages have suggested the lambda sensors and noisy catalytic converter, although Mazda say not - any body got any ideas?

Changing a lambda sensor should be cheap and easy.

A faulty catalyst is not. Have you driven through floods or hit underside on something before noise started? If so, cat could be partially collapsed inside..

Change your Mazda garage : they sound incompetent.

VW Passat 95 N reg. 1.8 petrol
My Passat has started to run slightly rough. A bit fluffy on tick over. Takes two tries to start, not usual one.
Thought I would clean and gap the plugs.
Does anybody know what the gap should be?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I'm trying to have the same conversation in two threads at the same time.
My point was, yes I do clean and reset old plugs, but only on the old Triumph. I think modern systems may be more critical.
I do take care to set to 25, or 32, or whatever the particular book says (in emergency a hacksaw is pretty good) but I have never known whether it really matters. Maybe 25 gives an easier spark but 32 a snappier one?

Hi my mates renault 5 has been leaking oil from the aperture at the top of the flywheel and it has been thrown against the radiator. When we checked the level it was 3 inches above maximum! He insisted that he had not put any oil in for 12 months, however we drained it and noticed it was very thin, almost water like (but not creamy).
We topped up with fresh oil & filter but he is concerned it might happen again .....any ideas much appreciated..

Money gone - car fixed. elekie&a/c doctor was almost there - thanks [see link to my thread above]. The problem was a broken wire caused by fan front of radiator rubbing it - It had not been properly positioned following previous repair. Aircon will be dead handy tomorrow - they have forecast -4C.

Good luck steve

I used the normal household cleaning cloths that we get in a big pack from the supermarket, the soft blue and white diagonal striped variety,in a big pack for not a lot. They are probably a soft synthetic material, but they didn't mark at all.
