Yes. I don't know whether there is supposed to be a standard manufacturer's setting, but I've measured new plugs with a 35 thou gap, and had to reset them to 25. I've always assumed a difference of a few thou was important.

if i do them i always set them same reason as cliff seen to many new plugs with strange gaps ...cheers...keo.

With a bigger gap more voltage is required from the coil to generate a spark.

So when Fred Bloggs fits new plugs assuming the gap is ok and his car is difficult to start and mis-fires a bit, what does he do? Replaces the battery.....
