Renault 5 rising oil level - chris k

Hi my mates renault 5 has been leaking oil from the aperture at the top of the flywheel and it has been thrown against the radiator. When we checked the level it was 3 inches above maximum! He insisted that he had not put any oil in for 12 months,however we drained it and noticed it was very thin, almost water like (but not creamy).
We topped up with fresh oil & filter but he is concerned it might happen again .....any ideas much appreciated..

Just a thought.But did it smell of petrol?

If it's petrol, or water, or anything it shouldn't be, then it needs changing pdq not just topping up. And investigating of course.

Sorry should have said as Cliff..If it has a manual petrol pump the seal may have gone.Which means petrol is leaking into engine?
