Hi All

I've a car alarm problem. I've a scorpion 916 fitted to my 1995 Golf Mk3 cabrio. The other day I drove it for a few miles, & when I came to restart it-nothing. AA diagnosed faulty starter. So we bumped it home & I took off the battery to fully recharge over the weekend. However, after putting it back in this morning the alarm system won't respond to the key fob remote control. Continuously on. I've replaced the battery in the key fob today, still no response. Scorpion's distributor's say 'it's lost it's memory & needs recoding-neccessitating removal of alarm & sending to them key blipper £23. Really?? Any ideas how to reset/restablish comms? They say that there isn't a powerup procedure. Really?? It's also occurred to me that this non-starting issue might well be linked to an alarm problem too. Funny it worked fine 1 minute & totally dead the next.

Best Wishes & many, many thanks.

Hi, I have a VW Golf '96 TDI. In these cold mornings it doesn't sart up very well. It seems to struggle. This morning it was a bit more hesitant than normal hence this request.
About a week ago I had my alternator and battery checked and was told both were fine.
Once it's been running it'll start up almost instantly any time afterwards. For example, I made some small start/stop journeys yesterday and it was fine, it's just in the mornings that it seems to find difficult. Should apply some gas (ie put my foot down on the accelerator) before starting etc? Any sure way of telling if it's the glowplugs? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Read more

Sounds like problem solved..Rather easier than changing glow plugs me thinks..

I've got an old E reg 1.6 sunny that has a bit of a dodgy clutch. It only seems to slip noticeably when doing about 50 in 5th gear and you really put your foot down, though this only happens sometimes, on another day you cannot make it slip at all. If it needs a new clutch is this a killer job to do and are clutch kits expensive for this car? Read more

Might be adjustable (Old micras's are and think the sunny is also , but this is/sounds like the first signs of a new clutch being needed.

Anyone had any experience of the Ford Ranger double cab 4x4? It's cheaper than the L200/Hilux etc but the same basic spec, and they all seem to come from Thai factories. Experience with the Ford non-turbo 2.9 diesel engine would also be appreciated as it is used in both the Ranger and Ford Everest in some markets but seems only available in the UK through Ford's special projects division. My reversing lights do not work, I have a Peugeot 306 Diesel Turbo, I have checked bulbs, lighting array for corrosion ad fuses, is there a switch attached to the gearbox or engine compartment? If so where do I locate it and how do I diagnose and fix the problem? Read more

P 2501

The reversing light switch is located in the engine bay near the clutch cable/housing. On my 306 it is a white plug and connector.

I have no experience of how difficult it is to replace, perhaps some wd40 on the connectors is all thats needed.

Just seen this on the BBC, it was brought to my attention after commenting that the new surface of a B road near me has been resurfaced but the surface feels very odd and has a shiny appearance even when dry. (odd = no real feedback to steering but ok 100m further on after moving back to old surface).

Would I stop within the distance listed in the highway code?

Probably so, but most cars, on most road surfaces I suspect would be able to stop in half the published distance nowadays.

So GM have rebranded Daewoo as Chevrolet.

My question is, what's the point? I can't go into my local chevy dealer and order a Corvette or an Impala or even a V8. Is this cynical marketing gone mad? These cars have no connection whatsoever with the chevy's sold in the U.S.

While they're at it why don't GM rebrand Vauxhall too? Read more

Some years ago GM tried selling Daewoo cars in New Zealand branded as Pontiac Le Mans. That fooled everyone for about oooh, three seconds. Cars themselves weren't bad, but they weren't good either. They had that particularly Daewoo characteristic of looking like they had three design teams working on them. One for the front, one for the middle and one for the back. Every Wednesday, all the designers moved one desk to the left.

My car has developed a slight gearbox oil leak. Looks like it comes from the right hand side driveshaft oil seal (not sure yet). If this is confirmed, how much should I expect to be charged to get it fixed ? Should I refer this to a main dealer or will an independent garage do ?

Thanks,

Kostic

Time sounds about right to me - had the driver's side oil seal replaced on my P12 under warranty recently - would say up to a couple of hrs.

As for oil, would assume some would be left in as you aren't removing the drain plug. You don't need to as it's a sealed system, unlike engine oil which gets contaminated !

Answers a question of mine, is that the oil would have to be replaced - i.e. drains out when seal replaced. No need to replace my gearbox oil for some time !

The lorry crash in the forum has reminded me of another incident in the news recently. A driver lost control of his car on a bend, went off the road and ended up on a railway line. He managed to avert a disaster by making a phone call in time, on his mobile phone. I wonder what the law's attitude would have been towards him, if he hadn't been able to make that phone call in time?

In the news report, they almost treated him like some kind of hero, not questioning why he went off the road in the first place. Read more
