Let's hear your interesting tales about your experiences out on the roads this week due to our current inclement weather.
Mine today was the half million pound signs on M25 quoting 'gritters on road ahead' Really?! sounds like Basil Fawlty stating the obvious! Read more
Has anyone seen the TV ad for the new Honda diesel engine? Absolutely brilliant, best car ad for ages. Read more
Honda sent out a mailshot last week with a CD to my partner (who bought a Jazz 18 months ago) which has this song on it, plus some other sing-along tunes.
If you phone Honda's marketing department and ask nicely they might send you one...

This must be the simplest scam in the book.
Bought a VW for £7,000 with only one remote key fob. Paid the seller cash *However* I did perform a HPI check and made damn sure the paperwork, VIN numbers etc.. matched up.
Drive away a happy bunny but then 4 days later my car is nicked. The seller's phone is disconeected and the address he was using turns out to be a bedsit and he hasn't been seen for days. You can tell I suspect the seller, especially since the car's alarm (Thatcham approved factory fitted system) did not go off and there was no broken glass. VW reckon the only way to nick it is with a tow truck or the Keys.
So my question is, what is there to prevent someone selling you a car, then using a spare key to nick it the next day...?? and is this common?

I do business in West Africa and am alert to scams
but this would never have occurred to me.
Oh?
I am the son of Sani Abacha, and have salted away US 27.4- million dollars...
Back to motoring...
Ever noticed how all Nigerian cars have the registration number etched onto everything? windscreen wipers, headlights, dashboards, steering wheels, wheels mirrors etc etc etc...
Obviously chop-shops are big business!
My 95 Escort 1.8TD chucks out a fair old smoke. Once up to a cruising speed it appears to die down - its at its worst during acceleration - especially if there's another car behind you with its lights on highlighting the smoke.
The car has 78K miles on it - serviced often, uses no oil between services.
I have tried adding Diesel Magic etc to clean out the injection system but it makes no difference.
Whats my plan for sorting this problem? I have checked the emission control valve - it appears to be buzzing away no problem.
Any advice would be helpful.
Cheers

Blanked off the valve this afternoon - haven't checked for smoke but its certainly driving far better - seems to have more power throughout the rev range.
I have seen an N reg TDi - 3 door for £3750. 112k miles
ABS etc but not a brilliant spec and it has no alloys.
Does this sound sensible - any thoughts.

You're right, I could try the welding myself. I have the space to do it, though not under cover.
The first problem is I have a small problem of a renovation 'project' aka house falling down around our ears. I am currently underpinning part of the foundations to create extra space in the basement for a utility room, downstairs loo etc. As the wife has to wear a coat in the current kitchen (no heating in that part of the house), and I need to finish the underpinning in one half of the extended basement before I can start preparing the whole of it for the new kitchen, the thought of me spending s few waking hours on the Landy will... well it doesn't bear thinking about ;)
.....and this is in addition to working for other people!
You're right, I am quite handy and can get to grips with new skills quite readily. I can also fit windows, but have just pain the extra £800 to get ours fitted by someone else, because I just don't have the time, and he can do them twice as quickly as I can.

Hi Back Roomers..
As some of you know I have a 1994 (L) Peugeot 306 diesel 3 door. Not having central locking is a pain in the wally wombat! I was considering these aftermarket kits, and wondered...Are they really any good? How easy are they to fit? is it a diy or professional job? Also i have a different key for both driver and passanger door as the car was broken into before i owned it. Would this make any difference? also can it be wired up to lock your boot? or is it just the doors?
Sorry for all the questions

My 7 has C/L from Vision UK (do a google). Works well and integrates with their alarm for remote locking etc. But it was a PITA to fit, partially because the lock on the TR7 is high up on the door and tapers so not much room to move and also because the location was very critical. Was around £ 60 as far as I can remember. Helpful co. as well

Sorry, no chance to check to see if anyone has posted an announcement of this. Am just paying a flying visit for first time in 3 months, and it will be a whileyet before I am back on a regular basis.
Radio 4's File On 4, at 2000 tonight (Tue 22nd) is investigating dangerous roads. Dangerous as in design. Things such as accidents being caused by water pooling on motorways, or the road surface melting when vehicles skid.
It clashes with Nigel Ogdens organ music on Radio 2, but it will be repeated on sunday

I recently changed the brake fluid on my 2000' BMW 525D after the warning light appeared on the dash.
I believe that there is a way to reset the brake fluid warning light by certain timed pushes of the trip button. Can anyone shed some light on this. It would be greatly apprciated as I'd like to try and keep the light in sync with the fluid change.
What else does this button do?.......

Bit of a techy question here. The TDC sensor has 2 wires running to it, I need to find out how much voltage should be running through these wires, I know one will be a pulse signal from brushing with the flywheel, is the other a +12v when ignition on?
Both wires on mine are registering 0v with engine on or off.

On this car the tdc sensor will output approx 2-5volts a/c engine running. There is no 12v supply to this type of sensor.
Having had a HPI check on a car and it coming up stolen recoved, I did another one with the AA who use Experian, this one came back clear. On phoning Carwatch (the fisrt ones) and asked why it showed, they phoned the insurance company and said it was correct. On phoning the AA (experian) and asking them why theirs were different I was told, the car had been stolen recovered, and because it was returned to the owner and no claim was made they do not disclose the information. UNLESS YOU ASK.
My advice is, do not do it online, phone, and ask if the car was ever stolen recovered, otherwise you could be left with a car that is not worth the amount you paid. Read more
What I am saying is beware. Ask if the vehicle has been stolen recovered because if you do not ask they do not have to tell you. I think this is wrong. I know it had minor damage because was told when I phoned Experian regarding the previous HPI. However, they could not tell me how minor. I have writtent to the owner at the time and am waiting for a reply to find out.
If a car is missing less than 14 days and returned by whoever to the original owner then you do not have to be told. HPI are ok so long as all the companies give the same information. It is obvious from my expreience that they do not. That is my point!
Just open a window and grit your teeth.
Doh!
