Any one recommend tyres for a GALAXY that last over 12,000 miles and not DUNLOP.

Has anyone discovered how to safely remove the thin film of wax that speads across the windscreen, when a car has been through a car wash (with wax additive) or someone has hand washed it using a shampoo impregnated with wax?
It is almost impossible to see through my screen when it is dark and raining. Read more
Also consider AutoGlym's window cleaner - it's the finest of its type I've ever used (in my humble opinion) and I've used at least 98 per cent of them....
But it doesn't come in lemon flavour as well sadly...:-)

Alright, I admit it! ;-)

It might be the SM that usually is parked in the street near Charing Cross hospital at Hammersmith.
This might not have even come from my car, but if I noticed a smell like sulphur (really did smell like match-heads) should I be worried? And if so, what about? *nervous look* Read more
If the car has a slight misfire it will generate a sulphurous smell from the unburnt fuel. Might be worth checking your plugs and leads.

After a fair amount of thought and research I've narrowed the choice of my next car down to either a late 306 hdi estate or a 2001 toyota avensis 1.8vvti.
I've got £5000 to spend and have found good examples of each (cargiant for the avensis)
However the problem I've come up against are two points of view which seem equally valid. They are:
1. Yes, Toyotas are extremely reliable but the spares are very expensive and more complicated to fix.
2. Peugeots are cheaper to service with cheaper spare costs and with lots of people saying they are reliable.
The reliability statistics shows that Toyota beats Peugeot but with a 4 year old car with 70-80k miles, simply from a total running cost, which makes more sense?
The Avensis seems well built if a little boring, the 306 not so well built and slightly interesting.

thanks again for your advice.
finally found, after countless hours of searching, a near perfect example of a 01 306 hdi estate with 34k miles, fdsh etc
great to drive and i know i made the right choice..
Discussed here before but wanted some fresh input.
My 1998 Mondeo Ghia X is in A1 condition mainly because i'm a motoring enthusiast and take pride in my vehicles, you could even say it's almost concours except for one thing, under the bonnet the engine bay is reasonably dirty not through oil leaks but dust and salt deposits over the last 7 years. I'm now thinking about selling it for something a bit newer and I want my engine bay to look like the exterior.
Now it seems that the opinion is steam cleaning the engine bay is a no no and also prospective buyers maybe suspicious of a clean engine.
But why is this? i don't understand it.
Should I steam clean it or leave it as it is?

"Hiding something" would be my first thought.
Is it just me, or are the headlight bulbs in Alfa 156s almost impossible to change?
I just managed (or, rather my wife managed - with her smaller hands!) to change the passenger side sidelights bulb, but neither she nor I can manage the dipped beam headlight bulb on the same side.
The manual has a very nice diagram to show what to do, but it seems impossible to actually do it?!
The driver's side does not seem as bad, as there is more room.
Any hints or tips?
Thanks & regards

Yup, my tally is 3 N/S & 2 O/S with one N/S sidelight!

I was under the impression that the Blackwall Tunnel is undergoing radical improvements. Have I missed something? The whole tunnel looks as miserable and decrepit as ever. The road surface may have improved but what else? I think they have done the wiring. Any information on what's happening?
Cheers,
Mike. Read more
The price you pay for giving in to the tree huggers - we really could have done with that East London river crossing, but it's not happening.
Hi All
I've a car alarm problem. I've a scorpion 916 fitted to my 1995 Golf Mk3 cabrio. The other day I drove it for a few miles, & when I came to restart it-nothing. AA diagnosed faulty starter. So we bumped it home & I took off the battery to fully recharge over the weekend. However, after putting it back in this morning the alarm system won't respond to the key fob remote control. Continuously on. I've replaced the battery in the key fob today, still no response. Scorpion's distributor's say 'it's lost it's memory & needs recoding-neccessitating removal of alarm & sending to them key blipper £23. Really?? Any ideas how to reset/restablish comms? They say that there isn't a powerup procedure. Really?? It's also occurred to me that this non-starting issue might well be linked to an alarm problem too. Funny it worked fine 1 minute & totally dead the next.
Best Wishes & many, many thanks.

Why not Dunlop?
I drive my Galaxy TDI quite hard and acheive 18000-20000 miles oout of the front tyres and 40000 out of the rear ones. I've done 55000 miles in my Setember 2003 Galaxy, so I should know!
Check your tyre pressures - sounds like they're way out if you only get 12000 miles out of the Dunlops....
...unless you've got the V6, in which case, well done for getting 12000 miles out of the tyres! In my old P-reg V6 Galaxy, I averaged about 9000 miles per set on the front tyres!!!
