dont know too much about diesels i'm afraid!pull out the key and it still keeps running.runs in a slightly odd way when i turn it off but still going none the less so i have to stall it when i park.
now,i'm thinking theres probably some kind of soleniod to cut off the fuel as theres no spark plugs or ignition to turn off?or is this a more serious issue?
car is a metro 1.4 non turbo..fitted with i think the pug 106 psa engine.80k miles.
thanks,bunny

Probably the fuel cut off solenoid on top of the diesel pump. A live feed to this opens it and allows fuel thru' When you turn off ignition valve closes and cuts fuel off. Sounds like yours doesn't cut off.

So you turn it off but it still runs "in a funny way"

Whats the funny way? It could be that the thing is knackered and is running on its own engine oil. Does it use a lot of oil? How many miles has it done? does it smoke a lot?

I was thinking along the same lines as RF. If the rings have gone it will pull engine oil into the bores..And keep running.Have seen it a couple of times on diesels

milage as i said in me post about 80k.sivicing all up to date.dont think that the engine is terminally worn.it just started doing this during the weekend.seems to still otherwise running perfectly.uses next to no oil(up till now, will check later).did over 600 miles this weekend didnt miss a beat.(running on not withstanding)
by running funny i mean seems to be kind of "stilted"when its switched off. say a bit like its misfiring-the tone changes .then if you turn the key back on starts running fine again.weird.
cheers for the answers so far guys.will check oil when the guvnor returns with the little blighter later and report back.
thanks again,bunny(fingers crossed)

probably faulty fuel cut off or it's getting a voltage when you turn off , from what you describe it sounds like fuel is being restricted when you turn it off but not restricted enough to stop running. check for voltage with ignition off at solenoid cutoff and dis-connect solenoid power and see if it still runs pointing to a faulty valve...cheers...keo

ok.have checked the oil and happily looks like it has used no more than it would normally-i.e.just a little bit.so i'm guessing that it will be cut off.gonna book it in with my local "tame"spanner man.
will post again when i have a fix sorted, thanks again all those that replied.

sounds like a bit of dirt or swarf or other foreign matter in the seat for the cut off solenoid not allowing it to close properly

ahhhh i knew there was a reason to change that fuel filter.......

meant to add it could also be a faulty return spring in the solenoid ,I think the last one I fitted was about a fiver from motor factors

If you have power to the solenoid, turned off when you turn off the ignition, it is usually a faulty seal on the end of the solenoid piston
Worth swopping, if only to prevent the danger of bits of rubber finding their way into the pump

just to let you all know, that i had the soleniod replaced by my tame mechanic and it now stops perfectly.new fuel filter also fitted.cost £40.bennefit to my ears-not being nagged remorselessly by "er indoors"-priceless!!
so thanks again all.another enlightening experience in thebackroom!
